The trip took place Sunday November 12 through Thursday November 16. Mr. Thomas Roach directed the trip assisted by Mr. Thomas Hewitt. Other chaperones were Mr. and Mrs. Matthew Clark and Ms. Mary Ellen Sloan. After a breakfast in the cafeteria, we spent Sunday riding to Washington. Upon our arrival we went to the top of the Washington Monument and later to the Lincoln and Jefferson Memorials and the National Archives. A visit to the Botanical Gardens began our second day of the trip fol- lowed by the above photo being taken at the rear of the Capitol. We got a special tour of the Sen- ate and House of Representative chambers as well as going into the Library of Congress and the 56 The Present Supreme Court. The National Cathedral, a ride up Embassy Row and a visit to the Zoologi- cal Park capped the day. In the evening seniors went through the historical Wax Museum. Tues- day we witnessed the making of paper currency at the Bureau of Printing and Engraving, toured through the White House, and visited the national acquarium. Then there was a tour of the F.B.I. building and the National Geographic building. We had a couple of opportunities to walk about the complex of the Smithsonian Institute. Visits to the Kennedy Center and the Ford The- atre were special. Wednesday we went through the Arlington National Cemetery witnessing the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, seeing the Kennedy grave sites, the Curtis-Lee Mansion and the U.S. Marine Memorial of Iwo Jima. While in Washington we had the chance to dine at several exclusive restaurants including the Pier 7 and the Flagship, both located overlooking the Potomic. It was a great trip. 57 Lynn Smith Robert Sehlmeyer Tammy Springer Dawn Sutliff Edward Stokes Denise Sutliff Clare Stone John Thomas Robert Shiel Lynne Tor an Karren Tremaine Donna Trottier Terry Tubbs Tami Walker Michael Waterhouse Joseph Watkins Bruce Werely A Look At The As we look to 1999 we are sure we will be able to read the following account of the senior class. The class is very proud of the accomplishments of ED CLARKE and SANDI KA- KUK who are now running against each other for president of the United States. MARY SCHUH has progressed from balancing a spoon on her nose and talked HAROLD HASTINGS and PATRICK WHITE (two national clowns) into joining her to perform as professional clowns. BOB SEHLMEYER and MIKE BOSFORD are now working for the Ford Motors Car Company which incidentally is now owned by MARC MERKLE. The new conductor of the Philadelphia Orchestra, ERIC SANDERS, has hired CAROLYN WILLIAMS to be the flute soloist for this season's tour of Europe. BILL GILBERT is now the head construction worker for EUGENE and BARRY PETTEYS who own the Petteys and Petteys Construction Company. They've been hired to build a summer home on the Sacandaga for CAROL HARRIS, the world famous country music star. We went to the Luzerne Mall and found DEB BENJAMIN running the music store; LORI MILLIS owns the pet store; SHELLY YORK runs a beauty salon; CINDY WHEELER manages a bakery; DAVID MOSHER has an art store, and DENISE SUTLIFF runs an ice cream store and hasn't gained a pound. CHERYL ALLEN owns a chain of fashion stores. CARL COMEAU is in competition against TERRY TUBBS for the title of World's Strongest Man. ANITA GALLESE has become a professional photographer after getting her start as one of the yearbook photographers at HLCS. Her most accomplished model is ELAINE GARDNER who specializes in modeling various pieces of medical apparatus, especially crutchexs and casts (her favorites.) KARREN TREMAINE has just opened as the star of an off-Broadway show. TAMI WALKER is a truckdriver but she seems to be spending much time at CANDIE ALLEN'S Auto Fix-It Shop. PATTY SANDERS and TAMMY PALMER run a children's co-ed summer camp. In the winter they recover at the dude ranch in Arizona owned by PAT BRENNAN (the worst dude of all.) MARIANNE FINELLI, BETH BREWER, and BEV RUS- SELL are the head wranglers and BETTY MEYERand PENNY BEACH are the proud owners of a fancy dinner reataurant. 60 A couple years ago SHEILA MOORHEAD and LYNN SMITH made an amazing discovery in the field of medicine. They found a cure for baldness which is why Future EJAY STOKES is no longer doing business at the Wig Salon owned by MELANIE WINSLOW. CINDY COWLES and DARCI WHITE are the co-editors of a new fashion maga- zine. It features some of the best models in the country. Recently such people as MS. DEBBIE MURPHY, MS. CAROLYN ELLIS and MS. MADELINE RUSSO have made appearances in it. DONNA WILLIAMS became a millionaire but nobody except her knows how she did it! The athletically inclined of our class have proved their ability in their latter lives. KAREN BROWN is the first basewoman for the New York Yankees while CLARE STONE is the center with the New York Nicks. LYNNE TORAN has set up the first field hockey league for men. WARREN CARLETON was a salesman for a company selling vaccuum cleaners until the other day when three of his customers, CHERYL COHEN, DOROTHY BROOKS and NANCY SANZO came up missing. They were found in a plant for recycling used vaccuum cleaner bags owned by DAVID ADAMS. CAROL ALLEN is now living with her husband in New York City. BARBARA DUELL is working as a nurse in a jungle somewhere in Africa. MIKE POST has become one of the greatest brain surgeons in the world thanks to the help of his assistant BOB SHIEL. Their latest patient, DONNA TROTTIER is sueing on the basis that the operation didn't accomplish a thing. She says if anything, they ruined the few brains she did have. Her lawyer, RON BELANGER says she has a good chance at winning the case because LAYNE CLUTE (the Su- preme Court Judge) has trouble himself knowing what is going on. JOHN THOMAS, DENNIS MATOON, and BRIAN LEMELIN are making good mon- ey working on a peanut plantation owned by the former President Carter. BILL CARTIER, the new principal at HLCS, has just fired Mr. Clark. MI- CHAEL WATERHOUSE has been hired in his place. MARLENE WRIGHT figured that her knowledge of decorating was so great after the prom that she's start a decorating business. She hired PATTY BORMANN and PATTY CAPUTO to plan parties to go with her decorations since they were experts at that end of it. 61 KIM NEDDO and BILL THORPE were hired to work on the committee that makes up the S.A.T. exams. Their mottos is If you can't beat them, join them. Her faithful piano player, BETH PAGE, is of course with her. Dawn's manager, MATT WINSLOW says she has a good chance of getting the role because GIL DEMARCO is director of the movie. After ten permits and nineteen failed road tests, GIGI GEREAU, TAMMY SPRINGER, and DONNA BIRKHAN are applying for a twentieth try, with hopes that the tester will look at their records and pass them automatically because he's afraid to ride with them again! TOBY PIDGEON surprised the entire class by arriving in a limousine driven by his chauffeur, MARK DEUEL. He was escorted by his body guards BRUCE WERELY, and BOB BROOKS. His personal dentist, TAMMIE CASON and private hairdresser SHELLY ALLEN were seated in the back with his gardener DAWN WISELL. FREEMONT YOUNG and STEVE YORK are working on inventing a new type of jeep that will go right up and over trees that get in the way. Overall it looks like the class has been very successful. The field hockey team thundered through with an 8-1 record. Mrs. Janet Getman, coach, noted the team has come a long ways in two years. Winless until Mrs. Getman took the team, she attests the turnabout in their fortunes to hard work and deter- mination. Good defensive play by Dawn Sutliff, Jill Kitsos and Marlene Wright stopped opponents from scoring much according to the coach. Freshman Val Stone had only 6 goals scored on her throughout the season and was a big help. The two high scorers for the team were Clare Stone and Andi Hagadorn. The team played a scoreless game in the sectionals and was seeded third in the State in the C, D, E class schools. 70 Junior Varsity Field Hockey Left to right, front row, Kim Reib, Allison Nollman, Carol Quirion; middle row, Coach Janet Getman, Robin Nevins, Laura Mohr, Diane Schlmeyer, Elaine Winslow, Carrie Wright, man- ager; top row, Amanda DeRossier, Crystal Allen, Suzanne Thornquist Volleyball VARSITY TEAM Left to right, kneeling, Kim Neddo, Connie Mudge, Patty Sanders, standing Marlene Wright, Kathy Meyer, Donna Trottier, Karen Brown, Andi Hagadorn JUNIOR VARSITY TEAM Left to right, kneeling, Carol Quirion, Karen Bender, Cathy Pettys; standing, Kathy Grant, Mandie DeRossier, Val Stone, Patty Hanlon, Lisa Powers 72 Varsity Basketball Left to right, kneeling, Gary DeMarsh, Jeff Trottier; standing, Matt Winslow, Gerry Woodward, Bill Cartier, Pat White, Coach Joe Hanlon, Mike Brady, Jim Trottier, Jim Petrone, Mike Water- house Varsity Cheerleaders On bottom, Laura Mohr, Allison Nollman, Cindy Backus, Nancy Gogan, Laurie Reyn- olds, Tammy Springer, Gigi Gereau, Mary Cae Waterhouse 7« Junior Varsity Basketball Left to right, kneeling, Paul Siudy, Coach Tom Rentz, Tim Brady; standing. Every five weeks the high schoolers had their own program and the middle schoolers their own show on WRGB, Channel 6. The shows aired at 6:55 a. m. with students bringing up to date school news and the students' slant on the world to thousands of viewers. Student Council began meeting each Wednesday after school and planned plenty of activities for the school year. Two representatives from each class would bring to the Coun- cil ideas which then would be dis- cussed. Officers for the student council this year were (below, left to right) Mary Zimmerman, vice president, Daniel Shiel, president, and Phyllis Waite, secretary Reciprocal Learning involving our tenth graders and selected elementary students took place during the first se- mester. Talented sophomores looking for a challenge met once a week as a group and with ad- visors Mrs. Evelyn Donohue and Mrs. Helen Steutzel to for- mulate lesson plans and to do research on their specialties. The other day of the week they met with the 2nd, 3rd and 4th graders to teach them such areas as Spanish, French, as- tronomy, piano, horsemanship and language arts. Enterprising Seniors of Mr. George Smith's Social Studies class in Advanced Eco- nomics found that they could ex- plore on a college level areas of daily living and social problems. Dr. Thomas Fox of Skidmore College did team teaching with Mr. Smith intro- ducing many new techniques of having students open up; such as the continual balancing of one upon another as seen here. Driver Education is always fun. Sometimes stu- dents get carried away as it seems happening here. Perhaps they are learning the outs of the car rather than just the ins of the car and the engine. Confused? Then just imagine if you were upside down like Tim Brady on his skateboard! Teacher Recognition Day was observed November 16. Mr. Walter Maxfield, Board of Edu- cation member and Mrs. Pauline Allen, secretary, present a flower to Mr. Bill Meyer as they did to many other staff mem- bers. Elaine Gardner didn't get any flower, but did get plenty of sig- natures on a broken limb. General Informals About The High School Students had the opportunity to make use of conference telephones now located on the second floor of the Central Administration building to talk to experts about various subjects. They became attuned to the political world in the Fall when first Social Studies classes inter- viewed Congressman Ned Pattison in the auditorium. They also talked to his opponent (and eve: tually winner) for the congressional seat, Gerald Solomon by using the telephone system. Meanwhile life rolled on for all students in the classrooms and media.
