Hi-Lights 1976 Hadley Luzerne Central Lake Luzerne, N. Y. With the Bicentennial upon us the 1976 Yearbook Staff proudly calls your attention to a brief look at our com- munity's past. Then LEFT--The Wayside Inn built Swiss style by Col. B. C. Butler in 1869 stood where the current elemen- tary and high school now are found Now YEARBOOK STAFF--Vicki Allen, Editor Mr. Donald Racette, Advisor Ginger Aldrich, Penny Berg, Karen Bourdeau, Ron Brown, Ed Bus, Lois Carleton Denise Clute, Cheryl Cohen, Geraldine Dingman, Diane Doubleday, Dawn Fortner, Dale Gardner, Duane Gebo, Laura Hoffman, Linda Hoffman, Anna Johnson, Diana Leclerc, Joanne LeMay, Geraldine Magliulo, Tim McSweeney, Doug Moore, Kathy Nevins, Laura Newton, Kathy Petrone, John Roche, Charles Rowell, Dorothy Stone, Dawn Waterhouse, Ingrid Williams, Audrey Wisell, Nan Wright, Patricia Zimmermann. In addition to those listed above we thank the other students, faculty and community per- sonnel who have supported this endeavor with bits and pieces of time and labor. It is a labor of love and we hope this memory book will recall to you each time you read it the wonderful times at H-L. We Take Pride In Our Then as now, work about the mill busi- nesses was a key to the local economy. The Yearbook Staff expresses apprecia- tion to Mr. Lester Thomas and the Hadley Luzerne Historical Society for these photographs. ABOVE we see the ole covered bridge in Hadley that spans the Sacandaga River. This is before the erection of the Bow Bridge. ABOVE picture is not too many years after the Civil War. Just as our Nation has a proud heritage, we can look with pride at our local surroundings. Much hard work, common sense and plenty of effort has been done by our area fore- fathers in the development of our townships and specifically our school district. Ice and logs in the bay at Lake Luzerne during the winter of 1906-07 are seen TO THE RIGHT. Past And Look To Future Memories ■ At the turn of the cen- tury, oc- casional trains un- loaded at the Hadley terminal. Hard Work Hard Play Made Up Each The Union Bag and Paper Co. was one of two major employers. Some re- mains of this this huge mill can be found by the waters at the junction of the Hud- son and Sacandaga. Then As Now, Ours Was AT THE LEFT we see the Stephen V. Morton Grocery and Meat Market. It was later owned by Cliff Smead and now is the Country Cor- nor restaurant at Main and Bridge Streets, Lake Luzerne. Picture was taken in 1900 On the current Bank site there once stood a movie theatre. But this one, LEFT, is yet another theatre.. and its lo- cation in 1920 was next to the then high school, seen in RIGHT of the photo. Location is area now adjacent to bandstand. A Pleasant Community In Which To Live RIGHT--This summer cottage on Lake Luzerne was in existence in the 1890's. Tourism... a reprieve from the city brought many visitors to our area in the summertime. LEFT--W.T. Gamar Dry Goods and Grocery Story in 1880. The same building later became the Village Store BE- LOW--The Lake Luzerne Inn which once stood in the area of the Island View Motel on Lake Avenue were the largest employers in the area. LEFT, the Garner Leather Works lo- cated at the now corner of Hill and Main streets was a center of busi- ness in the town. LEFT, The Rock- well House, seen in 1865 was one of two grand hotels in town.. the other being the Waywide Inn.. the site of the current high school. The Rock- well burned and was rebuilt about 1900, and looked like this (LEFT) But alas, another fire in 1916 wiped it out again. But with tough deter- mination then as now, the com- munity lived on with success. Seniors went directly to Washington D. C. for three days visiting the various Memorials, Bureau of Printing Engraving, National Archieves, National Acquarium, White House and Arlington. This class was one of the first in the nation to visit the new FBI headquarters as well as the new Wax Muse- um. They also visited the National Zoo and attended a symphony concert in the Washing- ton Cathedral. A concert by the U. S. Navy Band at which HLCS seniors were honored guests highlighted a visit to the D. A. R. Constitution Hall. For the first time a day at Colonial Williamsburg was part of the trip as well as frolicing on Virginia Beach. It was walking in ocean water in the morning of the final day and coming home to several inches of snow the same night. 25 Kindergarten FRONT ROW - Richard Scheff, Suzette King, Wendy Pidgeon, Phillip Underwood, Cynthia Cook, Jodie Winslow, David Shoesmith, Jody Bennett, Bobbi Jean Harrington, Mark Ovitt, Michele DeMarsh; MIDDLE ROW, Mrs Brock, David Gregg, Jeffrey Lindsey, Bryan Ames, Valorie Hawk, Suzanne Gebo, Royal Caldwell, Pamela Shattuck, Alicia Ogle, Eric Rist; TOP ROW, Pamela Allen, Stephanie Sutliff, Kenneth Tubbs, Robert Fearman FRONT ROW, (KNEELING) James Randolph, Wanda Scofield, David Philips, Francis Allen, Thomas Mahr, Robert Marcotte, Ivan Mosher, Damon Ellis, Kent Baker. Yet the comradeship, die esprit of the students, the excitement of the sub- jects makes the hours go by quickly and happily... in most cases. And when there are special visitors like Mr. John Eichhorn with his In- dian Arts collection (BELOW) or spe- cial events days like Western day (RIGHT) it’s the icing on the cake in our instruction. The clumination of study, work and play so often comes in die form of interrelation- ship via many groups. It is one more bit of evidence of the Spirit of togetherness at Hadley Luzerne. In this one example, LEFT, it is all the chorus groups at all lev- els at H-L at the Christmas concert.
