Without the help of the staff, members of the Senior Class, patrons, advertisers, and our helpful advisor, Mr. Racette, this yearbook would not have been possible. We feel that this is a true reflection of the past year at Hadley - Luzerne. Both of us hope that this book will be cherished among the many mementos of the high school years. Carol G Sue Sutliff Co-Editors 3 Dedication This year the Class of 1970 wishes to dedicate Hi-Lights to two men who have come to mean a great deal to us. We wish to thank them for everything and we take pride in dedicating our yearbook to them. In the short time he has been here, Mr. Gereau has ini- tiated new dimensions in our school and our Senior Class. He has become a source of strength and guidance. The friend- ship of this man has come to mean a great deal to each member of our class. Mr. Gereau has supported and encouraged students in HL and yet has displayed a firm hand when necessary. We are deeply grateful for all your help Mr. Gereau. Throughout his years at HL, Mr. Otoupal has worked re- lentlessly for the Class of 1970 and classes of the past as he is now doing for the underclassmen. Each year, the success of the Junior Prom has become possible because of the hard work and the talent Mr. Otoupal has put into the effort. While working on die Prom and throughout the school year, Mr. Otoupal has time for every student; he guides them and helps them through all kinds of problems. To you, Mr. Otoupal, our debt of appreciation is great. The Class of 1970 feels that we were very fortunate to have two such wonderful men as Mr. Gereau and Mr. Otoupal to help us through our school years at HL. Now as we are about to leave the hallowed halls of HL we again say thank you for everything. 4 ADMINISTRA TION Board Of Education Mrs. Madeleine Beattie Mr. Charles Aldrich Mr. Norman Powers 6 Mr. Roger Thomas Mr. Joseph Bulger, Clerk Mr. Stuart Townsend — Supervising Principal Mr. Leonard Gereau High School Principal Mr. Robert Carpenter Elementary Principal Mr. John Castle Guidance Counselor 7 Mr. Thomas Hewitt Business Manager Cafeteria Staff Bus Drivers FACULTY Science Health Mrs. Katherine Garlen Dental Hygienist Mrs. Elaine Dunn Nurse Mr. Thomas Trottier Jr. High Science Mr. Albert Zimmermann Sr. High Science Mr. Jack Abbott Jr. High Science Mr. Edward Decker Sr. High Science History Mr. Armand Gazaille Sr. High History French Mr. George Smith Jr. Sr. High History Mr. John Pickens Sr. High History Mr. Robert Kay Sr. High History English Mr. James Corkland Sr. High English Mrs. Margaret Stevenson Jr. High English Mr. Joseph Krajewski Sr. High English Mrs. Ann Krajewski Sr. High English French and Spanish Missing from picture: Mrs. Evelyn Lockwood Jr. High English 10 Industrial Arts Physical Education Mr. Robert Wallace Elementary Physical Education Miss Jacqueline Strassel High School Girls' Phys. These activities are planned according to students interest, and participation. The object of SC is to provide for student self government in extra curricular affairs and to train students in leadership and fellowship. The Student Faculty Administration Association newly formed this year serves the purpose of com- munication through students, faculty and adminstration. The Honor Society promotes scholarship, leadership, character and service through the student body. Under the guidance of Mr. Racette, ninth grade students seriously pursue the mind-teasing sport of chess. More a test of strategy, rather than luck, the members try to out-think their opponents. Chess Club Pep Club They may seem short. They may seem sweet. But they ARE loud . . . and very spirited. It's the Pep Club. They help lead the students in active re- sponse at basketball games. Hi Stepping Strutters A colorful troupe at any home basketball game and in community parades is the Hi-Stepping Strutters. Under the guid- ance of Mrs. F. Gardner these girls do precision drills. 63 The Varsity Club consists of boys who have earned their varsity status by playing at least one season of a varsity sport. This includes basketball, baseball, and soccer. The Science Club meets each week to allow interested members to explore the many wonders of the world around us. The members decide what projects and field trips they wish to do . . . and cover all areas of earth exploration. Future Teachers of America is an organization under the guidance of Mrs. Lockwood, consisting of students interested in teaching as a career. Students participate in field trips to colleges specializing in Teacher Education. They also spend a week doing cadet teaching in the classroom with elementary teachers at H-L. 64 The Drama Club under the guidance of Mr. Racette participated in putting on plays including an original comedy written by Mr. Racette, Debby's Dairy. The Club also sponsored a bus to Glens Falls to see the musi- cal comedy production Marne by the Glens Falls Operetta Company. The Projectors Club is a service club of boys inter- ested in the operation and mechanics of audiovisual equipment. The boys show movies, slides and filmstrips in the classroom as well as helping with staging and assem- blies. The Business Club consists of students who can type. They try for enough proficiency to win Greg awards and others in Typing and Business. Mrs. Pensel is the advisor. 65 Student Assembly Duc to the success of the student assembly program which Mr. and Mrs. Lefferts initiated last year, students started working on more such programs for the 1969-70 year at HL. WHEN YOU THINK BACK, WILL YOU RECAL1. . . . With “One small step for man” Ed Armstrong left the first footprint on the moon. 300.000 people, and a 20 mile traffic jam, listened to the sounds of the Woodstock festival. The Amazing Mets beat Baltimore in a five game world series. To protect our National Christmas Tree, area students kept all-night vigils. Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Midnight Cowboy, Easy Rider, Alice’s Restaurant. Romeo and Juliet, were movies “everybody” saw. Sly and The Family Stone, The Who, Creedence Clearwater Revival, and Joan Baez, ushered in the sounds of the seventies.
