Hadley-Luzerne Central School Lake Luzerne, New York 1969 HIGHLIGHTS Presented By The Class Of Nineteen- Hundred And Sixty Nine An underclassman was talking to me in the halls one day and rather jokingly asked me why anyone would want to leave the hallowed halls of H-L. Isn't the world full of hatred, war, and evils that are waiting to devour the unsuspecting innocent? Wouldn't it be easier to stay within the sheltered realm of our parents than to risk possible failure in the wide, wide world? Perhaps it is easier, but we are anxious to face the world as we know it is and to make it a better place for our children. Our generation will always remember three men who have gone before us with this same intention and whose deaths are fresh in our minds. We want to correct the wrong that put these men in their graves. Perhaps the words of one of these men, Robert Kennedy, best expresses the feelings and dreams of young people all over the world: Some men look at things as they are and ask why. I look at things that never were, and ask why not? Suzanne Gazaillc Editor-in-Chief Senior year is a time for realization. It is a time when we face many problems that were put off when we were younger. Things like Vietnam, college, and careers are suddenly a reality. Our minds tell us that today is the time for these decisions, for, tomorrow may be too late. Table Of Contents Seniors. Page 14 HADLEY LUZERNE PUBLIC LIBRARY LAKE LUZERNE NY 12846 Page 5 Looking back seems to be a favorite pastime for the young as well as the old. Every year the Seniors are asked to-look back into their past years at Hadley-Luzeme and to choose a teacher for their yearbook dedication. When the class of 1969 faced the problem, the solution was in- deed difficult. Every one of us had his or her favorite teacher and it soon became apparent that the entire high school faculty was eligible for the dedication. Yet, each one of us wanted our teacher to be one that had never received the honor but truly deserved it. It seems that in this endeavor, the Seniors have attained their goal. As Seniors we do not get to see this teacher often, yet when we do, we find that her ready smile has not lost its warmth. As June approaches, we realize that we never took the time to thank the one who brightened 6ur lives so much. The Seniors would like to make up for it now, and give our 1969 HIGHLIGHTS dedication to Mrs. MADELINE MANFRED. 4 Board Of Education Mr. Stuart M. Townsend--Supervising Principal Mr. Joseph Hanlon Mr. Norman Powers Mrs. Madeline Beattie 6 Mr. Arthur Brown--President Mr. Charles Aldrich One of the new faces to appear on the H-L scene this year has been that of MR. LEONARD GEREAU, our new high school principal. His duties in this newly created position range from the adjustment of our curriculum to the new syllabus to the supervision of the high school faculty and students. One of the most demanding positions in any school is that of Guidance Counselor. With this post, held by MR. JOHN CASTLE, comes the responsibility of steering each student in a direction in which his or her full potential will be realized to make each in- dividual a productive member of our fast moving, competitive society. MR. THOMAS HEWITT is the man who is in charge of the routing and operations of the many buses used by H-L with the prime goal being to get the students to school with a maximum of effeciency and also at a minimum cost to the taxpayers. 7 Secretarial Staff Cafeteria Staff 8 J. As Christmas approached, the Seniors wanted to share their joy with everyone. We decided to have a party, not with our selves or even in the school, but with the special classes at The Queen Ann. It was an afternoon of boundless happiness as we watched the children eat cakes and cookies and saw their eyes open wide when Santa began to pass out the presents. Perhaps our own eyes were opened to the true spirit of Christmas. 30 Soccer This past season, our soccer team was undefeated in all eight league games and in both Bishop Burke invitational games. The Eagles went on to win over Heatly 3-0 in the first game of the Section II playoff, but was later defeated by Northville, 1-2. The entire team can be respected for their fine performance at each game in sportsmanship and skill. Special recognition goes to Ron White, lead- ing scorer, and Kip Carlton. This Senior has been given the Most Valuable Player award in our own league games as well as in the Bishop Burke Tourna- ment. Congratulations team for a fine season. 32 Kip Carlton - Most Valuable Player Junior Varsity Basketball Varsity 34 35 JV warming up before first game. 36 season. The skit, performed by both cheer- leading squads, featured Charlie Brown in The Blue-White Spirit. It seems that the HL cheer- leaders asked Charlie to return the School Spirit that had been loaned after baseball sea- son. Charlie Brown found our Spirit, yet because of lack of use the Spirit had become deflated. Through the cheers of Charlie Brown Co. and the help of the student body, HL's School Spirit became the biggest ever. Also, die Mr. Atlas trophy was awarded. Bob 37 Junior Varsity Cheerleaders Varsity 38 39 Baseball In 1968, our team entered the new baseball season with great potential and proved potent enough to go to the sectionals with a 9-5 record. After defeating Fort Anne and Sharon Springs in the first two sectional games by scores of 7-2 and 7-4 respectively, the Eagles went on to the final sectional game against Windham at Schoharie which found us on top with a score of 10-3. This victory won our team the Class E championship along with the beautiful trophy pic- tured at the left. This occasion marked the first time in the history of H-L baseball that our team has won the honor of being class champions. Thanks team for putting us on top. 40 41 Pep Club Pep Club along with Twirlers help promote school spirit at H-L and organize buses for school functions. It is clubs like these that make students aware of sports activi- ties. These students are always at the sidelines to cheer the team to victory. 42 Twirlers Can you tell us where the year has gone? We have searched high and low in our H-L halls to present a resume of the school year. Now to make our year com- plete, we present to you-the 1969 High- lights. The band, under the leadership of Mr. Robert Davis, is very active throughout the year. They participate in the Christmas Concert, Spring Con- cert, and the Memorial Day parade. Also, The band plays at the opening of school assemblies and for many other school functions. The band deserves a great deal of credit for the wonderful job they do. s 45 Chorus The choruses are very Active during the school year. They participate in the Christmas Concert and the Spring Concert. This year, Mr. Lefferts plans to have his Senior High Chorus present a pop concert during this school year. This will mark the first time that a program of this type has been conducted at our school. Student Council Through Student Council, students first learn the functions of representative govern- ment. The Council provides its members with a variety of activities to make the school year interesting. Such things as dances, the annual winter carnival, and Saturday bowling are some of the many events sponsored by our Student Council. Each homeroom has one representative to insure equal representation in all deci- sions made. Strutters The Hi-Steppin' Strutters, under the direction of Mrs. Edie Gardner, per- form at basketball games, the Straw- berry Festival, and other local functions. This year they have been included as an organized club of HLCS. There are many other girls rehearsing to make the front line! 47 Fire Patrol Members of the Fire Patrol are at all school functions to keep students out of trouble, and to keep the doorways clear at all times in case of an emergency. They also assist in fire drills to make the students aware of fire safety. We owe a great deal to the fire patrol for the work they do in making our school safe. Honor Society This year the members of the Na- tional Honor Society are co-hosting an all area symposium in which thirty schools will be represented. Those attending will participate in discussion groups, and listen to various speakers. Members of the National Honor Society are chosen for Scholarship, leadership, service, and character. Varsity Club This organization is created with the consent of a representative group of letter men in all major sports at Hadley-Luzerne Central with the approval of the director of Physical Education and the principal of the school. 48 Newspaper Club The Newspaper Club is an organization composed of students from the Junior and Senior high level. The club tries to pro- duce an interesting and informative paper. hi order to finance some of the clubs activities members have washed windows, cars, and sold backed goods. This club participates in the Strawberry Festival. They produced an original play with the hope of contributing to the scholarship fund French Club Le Cercle Francais consists of students interested in securing materials for class- work and discussions. They work individu- ally in creating worksheets, bulletin boards, maps, and albums, and doing research into the French language. F.T.A. Students are encouraged to enter the teaching profession through advisors, speakers, and visitors to the school. Once a year, each member practices as a cadet teacher in the grades. The group also makes several trips to various colleges to aid them in selecting the correct institu- tion for their post-high school studies. 49 Projectors Club The Projectors Club is sponsored by Mr. Racette. The boys learn the operation and simple maintenance of all media equip- ment. It is a service organization that aids teachers in supplying films, filmstrips, records, and other materials to help in getting concepts across to the students. Primarily the boys in the Club aid in show- ing movies in the classroom and in the auditorium. Communication Arts Club Under the supervision of Mr. Racette the Communication Arts Club sponsors a yearly trip to Glens Falls Operetta Club musicale. This year the show was The Unsinkable Molly Brown. Fifty students made the trip. The main function of the club tliis year was to provide disc jokeys to play records for noontime dancing. In the past and again in the future the Club will perform a play at Christmas time. Assembly Committee The selection of programs available to the school is made by this group of students and advisors. Their decisions depend upon the educational or entertainment value of each program. They also lead the student body into the auditorium in a quick, orderly fashion. 50 Allen, J Allison, S Badyna, P Boutelie, S Cason, M Chicoine, A Croissant, M DOWN Demarsh, R Demarsh, Y Deming, B Denno, N DeVoe, V Dingman, J Ellis, P Gardner, F Gill, D Giordano, G Haak, R Harris, B Hayes, K Jordan, D Eleventh 52 Lemelin, M Morrison, D Norkett, P Ramsey, J Riley, J Salmon, S Savage, R DOWN Springer, R Stone, R Sutiliff, S Tennant, D Thomas, M Waite, D Wendell, H West, G Wheeler, L White, W Winslow, S Wood, E York, C 53 54 Allen, K Bala, H Balcom, D Beattie, J Bennett, C Bennett, J Benson, R DOWN Berg, W Blakely, J Bulger, K Bullard, B Bovee, C Bovee, K Bowen, M Brewer, B Brown, S Colson, C Condra, K Danforth, P DeCredhie, R Deitze, D 56 Denton, D DeVoe, D Duarte, D Eyer, L Fish, L Fuge, G Cage, F DOWN: Gardner, C Gilbert, D Cilles, M Jarosh, R Johnson, K Lawrence, J Lemelin, B Locke, L Mosher, S Mix, J McCarty, P Miller, C Madici, J Mann, S 57 Tenth Grade Mosher, S Moore, W Mudge, L Nizolek, D Ovitt, B Potter, J Ralph, D Randall, L Richards, S Rollman, R Steams, A Stone, K Sutliff, A Swart, J Waite, G Washburn, C Whitcomb, K Winslow, J Winslow, G Wood, D Wood, C 58 I Bosford, E Bulger, N Bovee, S Bennett, S Allen, j Allison, J Allen, E Ninth DOWN Crandall, D Chateau, C Boutelle, R Barrows, G Butler, B Brown, W Brooks, R Curl, D Colson, C Cason, N Clute, D Cutler, D Dean, J Davis, P 60 61 Deming, L Diehl, G Doubleday, G Ellis, D Evens, K Fiero, D Fuelner, M Farnsworth, R Fitzgerald, B DOWN Galusha, C Gardner, R Cilles, R Giordano, R Graulich, P Greenwood, P Gill, D LaBarron, C LaPicr, S Henderer, M Hayes, R Harris, J Lemcry, S Lathrop, M Meyer, E Morgan, J Morrison, R Masner, G McCarty, D McMurry, S Meinrcnkin, J Mellerup, R Marxouz, C Mosher, G Nason, M O'Connell, G Randall, J Ross, C Sager, J Sager, P Sirchia, J Smead, W Springer, D Straight, P Swart, J Tucker, D Tucker, G Tucker, L 62 Tcnnent, D Thomas, R Thomas, Z Towers, E Vernum, C Wendall, J Wood, R Waite, J Washburn, G Weiss, G West, P Wood, T Walsh, G 63 Allen, M Allen, J. Ann, Mr. William Sheri- dan presented H-L Coach Hanlon and his 1968-69 Basketball Champions this beauti- ful trophy. Each of the Eagles also were awarded jackets. Noted sportsman Mr. Harold Bradley was a featured speaker. To raise funds for the Scholarship Fund, two zany basketball games were played in the Spring. In a preliminary bout the Junior Class Girls challenged the Junior Class Boys. No one is still sure of the score for that one! In the main match, under the guidance of Coach Racette, the Senior Girls easily trounced Coach Hewitt's Faculty Women. In fact Mr. Hewitt didn't even show up for the game. .1 1969 Baseball This year HLCS started off the baseball season with a fine group of players. With their school spirit and willingness to win car- ried us to the sectionals. Steve Boutelle is just one of many boys on the team but his spirit and ability helped us tremendously. Baseball wouldn't be the same if the players didn't have someone to direct them. Coach Hanlon does the job well! Batter up! Kip's at the plate and ready to hit the ball, where it will stop nobody will know. II Special Events Again this year, Hadley-Luzerne was honored to have the United States Navy Band present a concert in our auditorium. The large audience was very responsive and gave the Band a stand- ing ovation for a job well done. Guest conductors for the Navy Band were Mr. Davis and Mr. George Palmer. Students from HL and area schools also participated in one number. April marked a first for HL this year. High School students from HL and Corinth combined in an assembly to discuss consolidation. Panel participants from HL were Hal Gardner, Tim LaPier, and Patty Norkett. Following the assembly a dance was held in the gym. Many danced to the music of our own Taboos . Everyone enjoyed himself and many feel the two schools should have more social gatherings. Ill Strawberry Festival The Strawberry Festival is an annual event which is anxiously awaited each year by the students as well as the area residents. Each grade participates in the festivities by planning an activity for the evening: pony rides for the children, the car smash for the boys, and a dance for the teenagers. This evening is a time of fun and enjoyment and most important, strawberry shortcake! IV Once again the HLCS Seniors joined the Westport Seniors on their annual trip to Washington D.C. April 18-22 marked five days of touring Washing- ton, Gettysburg, Arlington, and Mt. Vernon; Seeing such sites as the Capitol, Lincoln and Jefferson Memorials, Smithsonian Institute and the Kennedy graves, just to mention a few highlights. Miss Strassel, Mr. Otoupal, and Mr. Kay were chaperones while Mr. Racette was tour guide for the Westport bus. This was truly a trip that will be remembered by all. Would you believe tired feet?! After touring many government build- ings, the seniors decided to rest before continuing their sightseeing. V Iwo Jima Memorial one of the most impressive monuments the seniors visited. Graduation June 23, 1969 was a night of joy and happiness for the graduating class of 1969. This night marked a turning point of their lives as they all turned to face the outside world. Sixty per cent of the class plan to attend college in the fall, while three will be entering the service upon graduation and the remaining students will be working at the occupation of their choice. VI Mrs. Daisy Wood Hoffman Salutatorian of the graduating Class of 68 lights the candle of knowledge. She gave her good luck speech to the class of 69. Left: After the diplomas were awarded to the seniors, the candle- lighting took place. Seniors and their candlcbearers proceeded down the aisles and left the auditorium for senior reception. Right: You will Never Walk Alone ,was one of the songs that was sung by a group of students. Immediately following the graduation Exercises the seniors were given a reception by the Junior Class mothers in the gym. VII Sixth Grade Graduation Date: June 19, 1969 Time: 10:00A.M. Place: HLCS Auditorium Event: 89 Sixth Grade students left behind their grade school days and started into the new world of Junior High School. The ceremony, This Is Your Life took the students back through all their years at HL. Awards for citizenship, read- ing progress, and achievement were presented along with the certificates. VIII
