AN OPEN LETTER TO OUR PARENTS Dear Mother and Dad, I'll never forget that warm September morning when you walked me to the end of the driveway, handed me a brown paper bag, and despite my energetic protests forced me to board a big yellow monster that I would wait for, run to and sometimes miss during the next twelve years. As I recall 1 was crying, and if I’m not mistaken, when I rushed to the bus window to catch one last glimpse of you I saw tears in your eyes too, although you waved reassuringly! 1 guess I finally got used to the idea, and for the next six years became engrossed in all the wonders of life that were opened up to me. I discovered that my teacher had the key to a vast treasure chest that contained valuable knowledge. To induce her to open it, all I had to do was ask questions (and then come home and ask you more, perhaps becoming indignant if you didn’t know the answers!) Before I knew it I ended up in Junior High. You remember that stage don’t you? I was an awkward, self-concious, daydreamer! Those two years flew and magically 1 found myself in High School. That’s when I learned how to work, and compete, and worry! In between cramming my sometimes muddled head with information, I managed to care about my appearance, date, and talk you into letting me have the family car every Friday night! Through all those years of turmoil you were so understanding (well most of the time anyway) and now that I’m graduating and making preparations for my debut in the adult world. 1 really don’t know what to say to you in parting, except “thank you” and “don’t worry. I’ll be a big success someday--I’H have to be, because after all I’m your child, and you’re the most successful parents in the world!
