THE EDITORS MESSAGE We, the editors, of the 1967 n Highlights trust that we have successfully fulfilled our obligation of including a content of cordial and notable interest for everyone. We would like to express our heartfelt acknowl- edgment to Mr. Donald Racette, yearbook adviser, whose diligent, patient, and vivacious personality made this yearbook largely what it is. We would also desire to pay creditworthy tribute to the members of this year- book staff for their devotion to this endeavor. In behalf of the senior class, we extend its gratitude and appreciation to the members of the Hadley-Luzeme Central School Faculty for their truly sagacious guidance they devoted to each and everyone of us. During the construction of this annual it is our hope that the time was as pleasurable for Mr. Racette as it was profitable for us. We hope that High- lights n has captured those cherishable memories of this school year at Hadley-Luzerne Central for all our subscribers. Sincerely yours, THE EDITORS ----y Linda 0 Rourke Edward Norkett The class of ’67 proudly dedicates this yearbook to a teacher who has come to mean a great deal to us; Mr. Webb. As I recall 1 was crying, and if I’m not mistaken, when I rushed to the bus window to catch one last glimpse of you I saw tears in your eyes too, although you waved reassuringly! 1 guess I finally got used to the idea, and for the next six years became engrossed in all the wonders of life that were opened up to me. I discovered that my teacher had the key to a vast treasure chest that contained valuable knowledge. To induce her to open it, all I had to do was ask questions (and then come home and ask you more, perhaps becoming indignant if you didn’t know the answers!) Before I knew it I ended up in Junior High. You remember that stage don’t you? I was an awkward, self-concious, daydreamer! Those two years flew and magically 1 found myself in High School. That’s when I learned how to work, and compete, and worry! In between cramming my sometimes muddled head with information, I managed to care about my appearance, date, and talk you into letting me have the family car every Friday night! Through all those years of turmoil you were so understanding (well most of the time anyway) and now that I’m graduating and making preparations for my debut in the adult world. 1 really don’t know what to say to you in parting, except “thank you” and “don’t worry. I’ll be a big success someday--I’H have to be, because after all I’m your child, and you’re the most successful parents in the world! I I Left to Right C. Alien C. Allen C. Allen C. Allen J. Allen S. International Papei Project Head Start is the toddler’s zone in America’s quest for a land of equality and opportunity. Head Start volunteers report how startled they are to discover thou- sands of children like the little boy in our photograph. Children who are rarely read to, or spoken to. Some children never ask why the sky is blue. Their curiosity has never been awakened. And when they do learn to read, they are usually years behind their classmates. This project works with children who need to overcome the handicap of poverty. But youngsters from any back- ground or neighborhood can benefit. Here's how you can set up a Project Head Start at home to help pre- pare your own child for reading. Begin by talking to your child when he’s an infant. The sound of your voice will help him develop his talk- ing skills faster. Children who talk well usually become good readers. INTER NAT tells how reading can help Take time to read to him. He will be flattered by your undivided atten- tion, and emotionally reassured. When you read, let him participate by holding the book and looking at the pictures. Encourage questions. They broaden your child’s horizons. Talk to your child. Read to him. Encourage his curiosity. These three simple steps will help give him a head start at school—and help prepare him for the lifelong joys of reading.
