Dedication A dedication is meant for someone special. We, the senior class of 1959, find that someone special in you, Mr. Zimmermann, our teacher of sciences, consultant and guide through many trivial and significant times. Youth needs education, guidance, understanding, and friendship. During our high school yean, we were most fortunate to receive all these, and so very much more from you. You have given us a sky full of the brightest stars which will light our way into the future. Dedicated to you, Mr. Zimmermann, is our yearbook. Foreword In these days of Sputniks, Atomic Submarines and the like, progress inthe world we know remains always in the public's eye. In our Hi-Lights of 1959, we wish to show the evident progress right here in our commu- nity and in our school. The progression of learning, teaching and all other factors involved in the school, including community spirit, will certainly add to the welfare of the people of the community, and, we wish to think, to the world in which we live. Class History As we begin our last year in Hadley-Luzerne Central, we feel that it is necessary to review our past years of school. We the Seniors have seen the rooms in the old Odd Fellows Hall, over Frank’s Market, in the Firehouse, and the old high school exchanged for a new, beautiful, modern school. We entered the ninth grade under the guidance of Mr. Zimmermann and Mr. Gazaille, and started our Washington Trip Fund by selling seeds and book- covers. For our class officers we chose Sandra Washburn as President; Bill Hughes as Vice-President; Eva Tubbs as Secretary; and FayScofieldasTreasurer. We plunged into our Sophomore year shouting, CANDY, ICE CREAM, and COKE for sale! Our able advisors were Miss Woodin and Mrs. Woods. From the 10-A section the officers were Don DeMarsh, President; Barry Bishop, Vice-President; Carol Kreinheder, Secretary; and Sandra Washburn, Treasurer. The 10-B officers were Dorothy Walker, President; Fayanne Scofield, Vice- President; Margaret Bourdeau, Secretary; and Jo Ann Rozell, Treasurer. We waltzed into our Junior Homeroom to various prom tunes. Our director and helper was Mr. Gazaille. From the suggestions for a prom theme, we chose the title, Deep Purple. To the music of Steve Gitto and the Bluejacks we selected our Queen, Helen Sutliff, and our King, Don DeMarsh. Our offi- cers were Helen Sutliff, President; Jay Powers, Vice-President; Carol Kreinhed- er, Secretary; Fay Scofield, Treasurer. We had reason to be proud this year as the President, Treasurer and Secretary of the Student Council came from the Junior Class. Now as seniors we hum Pomp and Circumstance to ourselves and daydream of caps and gowns and our futures. As this history is being written the Year- book editors, manager, photography editor, sports editor, Mr. Corkland, our class and yearbook advisor, and the entire class are singing the Yearbook Blues to the tune of money, typing, and proofreading. We are planning our Washington trip and are also participating in the Queen Ann Project. For our senior officers we have chosen Don DeMarsh, President; Susan Stewart, Vice-President; Ann Chandler, Secretary; and Alice Butler, Treasurer. Not only are the students being provided with some of the best classroom teaching and learning experiences in the fields of science, the arts, and social sciences, etc., but it is also forging ahead with a program that is unique in the annals of American education on the public secondary school level, and which is providing a most practical aspect of living for our modem society. This year's graduating class has been one of the pioneers in our Queen Ann Project. Effects, results, and impressions in individuals have been almost as varied as are their distinct personalities. But to a person, the experience of this living-in program has given insight into some of the problems and the situa- tions to be confronted when attending institutions of higher learning or accepting his first full-time position away from home. The International Paper Company Foundation, which has supported this pro- ject, has demonstrated clear thinking and genuine interest in the kind of educa- tion being offered at Hadley-Luzeme Central School. Its constant backing, not only financially, but in its belief in what is being practiced, has given students and educators alike the courage to practically institute this new phase of edu- cation to meet the needs of students in this area. The opportunity to live at the Queen Ann has been given to all seniors, and some juniors, who have had the desire to do so. A four-week stay by groups of seven or eight has proved most successful in carrying out a full program, includ- ing field trips of a cultural nature, educational speakers, and learning the fun- damentals of entertaining at buffets, formal dinners, teas, parties, and the like. We have not been looking for students that are completely changed after their stay at the Queen Ann. Neither do we expect the boys and girls to imme- diately accept the total program offered to them. However, each person has entered Into the program fully aware that in some way his actions and customary way of life would be modified to a cer- tain extent during his stay at the Queen Ann. Acceptance of this program will enable them to become more smoothly integrated into society once away from the environment of the immediate family. Through the efforts of every person who has stayed at the home or has been involved in projects prior to beginning the residence program, modernization and refinishing of the existing furniture has taken place. A project has been undertaken by each group - tiling floors, building new cupboards, painting fur- niture and entire rooms, and wallpapering. Even livening up the home with art work done by students has proven beneficial in creating a feeling of belong- ing to something permanent at the school. Of all the classes which might have had the opportunity to initiate the Queen Ann into a full-time phase of the school's curriculum, none could have entered into it more fully or have participated with greater enthusiasm and co- operation than did yours, the Class of 1959. Your efforts have been appreciated and will be of assistance in the final evaluation of results determined during this first full year of residence. Such findings will in many ways guide the pro- ject in successive years and will aid greatly in enlarging its program. You students who have contributed to the Queen Ann program and its im- provement during this school year have an additional task in the future. It is one of continued interest in your town and your school, and of interest as gen- uine as you are now showing. And as your interest in such affairs grows from that of an alumnus to an interested taxpayer, so should your assistance to the program of the Queen Ann in order that it might be one of continual change, evaluation, and improvement. In the future, may you remember the opportunity given to you and experi- ence gained from participation either directly or indirectly in the Queen Ann. We have seen our school grow, having attended classes all over the vil- lage and in the old high school until its destruction. We have seen the start of the new Queen Ann project, and the erection of a beautiful new school which vibrantly continues to grow. We have made many friends while in high school and will miss those of you who are younger than we. You should, as we did, notice the leaving of upperclass friends and prepare for your graduation and fu- ture now. Even though our passing will be routine and we will soon be forgotten, we will always remember our teachers, friends, and life in H.L.C.S. Part of us will always remain with you. Charles Fosberry, Jay Powers Co-Editors Guests Haffizullah Amin Principal Junior High School Kabul, Afghanistan Niamatullah Maroof Principal Teachers Training Institute Kabul, Afghanistan Mr. Stuart Townsend Principal Hadley- Luzerne Central School Our Impressions For five days we had the pleasure of visiting Hadley-Luzerne High School. We went to almost all the classes, in part of the time we observed the method of teaching and for a few minutes we answered the questions made up by the students about Afghanistan. The students asked us many intelligent questions and they found our culture different, but interesting to them. All the students are very friendly. We cannot forget the days of walking in the community in order to see what vvas going on outside the school. We received warm Hello's wherever we went. We will take all these good impressions back home to our schoolchildren, our families, and people and that will foster understanding and friendship between our peoples. We hope that the government of the United States gives more opportunity for the foreign exchange stu- dents to pay visits to such beautiful local communities and enrich their fund of information of American culture. We have learned many things from this school and hope we have contributed to the students. We hope the principal, staff, and the students of Had ley-Luzerne High School accept our good feelings and sincere impressions. We are thankful to Mr. Townsend that he also invited us to two meetings of the Board of Edu- cation. We hope that the school will progress more under the leadership of Mr. Townsend and his able staff during the future years. We wish them the best of luck and a happy life. Your sincere friends, P. T.
