Vic Grant captained our crew and Bob Baker was his able assistant. Janis Perry kept the ship's log and Dottie Adams took charge of our ship's meager treasury. Bob Shiel and Barbara Stanley represented our crew in the fleet's council. The first leg of our voyage wasn't very eventful because we did not do very well in sports, nor did we increase our class treasury. The next fall we set sail from the science room with Miss Sulich as chief commander. Captain Paul Gibson and co-captain Eileen Saheim took charge of the voyage. Babara Stanley filled in the pages of the log and Gary Bovee handled the ship's funds. Joan Johnson and Bob Shiel sat in on the meetings of the fleet council for that trip. Bob Shiel became a seaman first class when he was elected vice president of the association of vessels. Our treasury began to grow as we sold garden seeds, hats and cokes. In June we docked and prepared for the third year of our voyage. In September we sailed off from the social studies room under the guidance of Miss Woodin. Paul Gibson still directed the voyage. Barbara Stanley continued to take notes in the log. Harry Zeigler kept records of our financial status. Joan Johnson and Elizabeth Rayder represented our class in the fleet council. Dottie Adams added her name to the list of seamen first class when she was elected treasurer of the seamen's association. Sailors Gary Bovee and Harry Zeigler were chosen to represent our vessel at Boys' State. Bob Shiel was chosen to go as first alternate. Our crew came in first in sports and our ship was adorned with the trophy. We sold greeting cards, stationery, candy and memory books to add to our ship's funds. We paid the cost of pro- duction for the school play, therefore, we received the profits from it. Our class rings arrived in March and of course we were very proud of them. The Junior Prom on May eighth was a big success. An Hawaiian theme was used and the ball- room was decorated with fish nets and palm trees. Gordie Randall's orchestra provided the music. Paul Gibson and Joan Johnson were chosen as king and queen. We started the last leg of our journey in September 1953. We again set sail from the social stud- ies room with Miss Woodin as ship's commander. Paul Gibson and Ed Zeigler were captain and co-captain of this voyage. Ida Scofield began the last entries in the ship's log, while Harry Zeigler continued to watch our finances. Barbara Stanley and Josie LeBarron sat in on the fleet council meetings. Magazine subscriptions brought in most of our money. In April we will leave for Washington and N. Y. where we expect to see: The White House, The Lincoln Me- morial, Mount Vernon, The Statue of Liberty and other points of interest. On our return to Luzerne, we will sail for the Port of Graduation where we expect to dock on June 28, 1954. (Continued on page 48) (?CeU4 ProfiAecy It was an extremely warm day in July 1974 and I had been traveling since early morn and it was now late afternoon. The man ahead of me asked me if I would like to read the newspaper. I recognized him as one of my former classmates. Stan Hughes told me he was on his way to Ber- muda to paint several murals on the walls of a fabulous hotel owned by Vic Grant. He said Vic had many exclusive hotels both in the U. S. and Europe. Stan was amazed to learn I had opened what might be termed the most modern beauty salon in the Capitol district. On the journey the train passed a large farm. I asked the conductor who owned the farm and was told it belonged to Miles Cowles, a very scientific farmer. He said that all the machinery was operated by atomic energy. When the train reached Albany; who should enter the coach but Gary Bovee and Harry Ziegler. They were on their way to Africa to build a road from French Morocco to Cape Town. While we were recalling former days at HLCS, the conductor entered our coach and informed us the train would be delayed at Yonkers for one hour. .To while away the time, we decided to visit an ultra-modern furniture factory which could be plainly seen in the distance. The owner, himself, greeted us at the door. Who was it? Charles Wyman, of course. On reaching N. Y. , I was met at the train by several newspaper reporters who were anxious to get more information about my beauty salon. Among them was Joan Johnson, ace reporter for the New York Herald Tribune. She told us that this was a far cry from working on the HLCS Hi-Lights. That evening we decided to make an inspection tour of Fifth Avenue. While we were walking along, we saw many exclusive women's shops but one was outstanding. We went inside and dis- covered that it was run by none other than Ida Scofield. Ida told us how happy she was that the Brooklyn Dodgers, under the management of Paul Gibson, had finally won the World Series! Con- gratulations, Paul, we knew they would do it some day. The following day Ida and I visited the U. N. and whom do you suppose we saw looking at one of Stan's priceless murals? Barb and Art, of course. Barb told us they had purchased a beautiful home in Westchester and the Admiral was enjoying his retirement immensely. That evening while strolling up Broadway, we glanced up at a movie marquee and to our sur- prise we saw that the movie advertised was a Wilson Mosher production. Gilbert was famous for his scenic designs and Marshall for his unique style of photography. Leaving the theater, we decided to visit the former Arthur Murray Dance Studios, now, under the direction of Ed Ziegler and Barbara Ralph. We learned that Barb had developed a new type of square dancing and Ed had perfected his round dancing in which his dip is foremost. At the dock we met Dottie Adams who had gone down to see her old friend Rosemary Water- house off to Europe. Rosemary was going to Paris and Rome to collect exotic recipes for a chain of Waterhouse diners across the country. After bidding good-bye, we went with Dottie to the Waldorf Astoria which is now owned by Bob Sheil and Cecil Reynolds. Bob retired from auto racing after winning five trophies at the Indianapolis Speedway with his jazzed-up Hudson. Cecil was a TV star and his show Comedy on the March was such a huge success that he retired from show biz and he and Bob bought the hotel together. During lunch Dottie told us that she was Head Mistress of the PRESBYTERIAN GIRLS’ School on Long Island. We later learned it was very successful. We also learned that Janis Perry had opened a school in Luzerne to train Elementary School teachers. Good luck, Janis. We all know that this is a very worth-while project. Before leaving New York, I visited Greenwich Village to see Josie Le Barron who had just re- ceived a Pulitzer Award for outstanding work in the field of literature. On arriving home I learned that Elizabeth Rayder had become President of the First National Bank of Syracuse. I'm sure I shall never forget the pleasures experienced on my New York trip. Aside from the joy of reunion and the many surprises that I received, there was firmly embedded in my heart the knowledge that the class 1954 had achieved a niche in the Hall of Fame. esiAottfUitCea % NAME NICKNAME Dorothy Adams Dottie Joan Johnson Blondie Victor Grant Vic Paul Gibson Hoot Ida Scofield Fido Gary Bovee Gar Janis Perry Pinkie Miles Cowles Tunk Barbara Ralph Ralphy Harry Ziegler Harass Rosemary Waterhouse Bucket Charles Wyman Chub Lorena Maxam Rene Gilbert Mosher Gil Elizabeth Rayder Lizzie Stanley Hughes Stan Josie Le Barron Jo Barbara Stanley Barb Cecil Reynolds Ces Marshall Wilson Pete Robert Shiel Bob-o Edward Ziegler Ed PASTIME FIRST GLIMPSE Driving Pajama Parties Loafing Northville Drive Corinth Luscious Dates Snapping Gum Hunt and fish Encore Writing Long Island Movies ??? A sadness comes within our hearts When each memory of the past Comes slowly creeping in our minds These thoughts we hope will last. We'll cherish all our happy times With each classmate so true The memories of our work and play Will always seem like new. And may there be a guiding star To help us on our way As each one seeks by different task To live each future day.
