But, can you ™ blame him for not correcting a wrong impression when fifty thousand dollars is at stake? You see. . . Bill is a Doctor of Philosophy and a college professor, which means he really can be called “Doctor” all right. But his fiance, Angela, has a wealthy, cranky uncle who likes medical doctors but is strongly prejudiced against professors. So when Angela brings Bill to meet Uncle Henry at the hospital and introduces him as Dr. Jack- son Uncle Henry thinks he is a surgeon. . . and no one corrects him because he promises to give Angela and Bill $50,000 for the first life Bill saves. That really starts some- thing. . . for the regular hospital doctor has to leave town suddenly, and Bill is called upon to help in several humorous emergencies. A patient swallows a chicken bone. Bill extracts it with sugar tongs. One laughable situation follows another in quick order until the worst of all happens—a patient suddenly develops appendicitis! ! Bill, much against his will, is rushed out to the operating room to don a mask, rubber gloves, and a uniform. To tell more would be to give away some of the fast-moving, rib-splitting fun. Then, there are the antics of the two hospital roommates, Dodson and Puckett. To keep things in a continuous uproar, Puckett, jolly and extremely mischievous, and Dodson, wealthy, crabby and overbearing, keep the hospital staff in hot water from start to finish. Yes, here is a new type of really different farce under the direction of Edith McLenithen, Senior English Teacher. LELAND ALDRICH • • • • SALLIE FINCH....... Miss Cordelia Puckett, Jonathan's older sister. Miss Dovie Finkledink, an old maid looking for a mate. Dodie Blake, a loose-jointed undergraduate nurse. Woman and child. Two old maids. With a wife, Pat, and 12 children, he certainly needs a budget. Myrtle is now a famous trick rider appearing in Madison Square Garden, If she should stall, or fall, or break a bone, she humbly begs your pardon. Myra Brannon, Bing Bang Bruiser of Luzerne, now holds the World’s Championship Title for Women Wrestlers. Maybe you have seen her on television. Have you been to the ‘‘Toper’s Inn” owned and operated by Cooper and Waterhouse? If not, stop in. Ernestine Cowles has been engaged to 10 different men in 10 years. She is still singing “They try to tell me I’m too young.” Billy Duel!, once the World’s Champion Hot Rod Racer, (Fords, of course), has now retired and owns the only dairy farm in Luzerne with cows that people have to look up to. Admiral Willard Eastwood of the Navy! Have you read of all his brave feats in the paper? Duties aren’t all that occupy his mind. He keeps one eye on the Waves, especially one by the name of Jean. Sallie owns one of the largest and finest ranches in ail Podunk, Without all of the horses and husbands as well, I’m sure her life would be sunk. Gretchen floats through the air with the greatest of ease, She’s an Air Force nurse on the “Flying Trapeze. 99 Have you seen television lately? Then you have seen Fannie Grimes, The funniest, most hilarious comedian, since Bob Hope’s time. (Even Albert thinks so.) Jean Hastings, owner of the Stony Creek Apple Orchards, Inc., specializing in hard cider, has closed down her place to move to sweeter surroundings. It has been predicted that Maestro Willard Palmer has the finest jazz band known to man. He is leader of the famous “Heptet All Girl Band. ” Have you been to the “Gwen Rosman Chemical Laboratory?” If not, visit it sometime. Who knows? Maybe you will see your own appendix being tested. Martha Hughes has now taken Miss Patience’s place at the old H. L. Grade School, punching lunch tickets. Of course, she sees that the children get her favorite dishes. The Old Maid of Stony Creek can be seen out of the backwoods once a year after supplies. To our surprise, we find that it is none other than Joan Hyde. Have you heard of Dora Jean’s retirement from the Lonely Hearts Club? She is going to marry an undertaker, so her heart will no longer be lonely. Doris Willard owns one of the largest Day Nurseries for children in Luzerne. In fact, she’ll even watch your husband while you work, if necessary. Lorreen and Hugh are raising their own Signal Corp. Let us recall some of the activities of our loyal class. When we entered our Freshmen Year, we started down a strange new road with a class of 26 members. We felt a captivating thrill which only Freshmen can feel. Our leaders were Dick Millward, President and Dora Jean Springer, Secretary. Each day, trouble reigned for our class advisor, Paul Meadows. During the first steps of our journey down this road we encountered class parties, soccer games, inter-class sports, and baseball games. The first turn in our new road was reached. An exciting and wonderful year had passed. Our second year loomed over the horizon as we rounded the bend. Our Sophomore Year was dawning. A new year demanded new leaders, so our old leaders were replaced by President Willard Eastwood and Secretary Gretchen Gray. Doris Vogt became our advisor, relieving Mr. Meadows of his strenuous duties. Meetings were held in the Study Hall to discuss the advisability of a Youth Center. Since we had always been delinquents this debate was vital! Our parties were outstanding, as you will remember. We journeyed, friends, until we reached our second turn in the road of high school life. No longer could we retain the name of Sophomores. Our Junior Year dawned with excitement and adventure, with Mr. Stewart as Advisor. Whoever knew that school could be so wonderful! A Junior Prom! Imagine that! Dick Millward came through the class election with flying colors as our President again. Naomi Cooper took over the pencil and paper as Secretary. Because of our extensive wealth, Tom Cheyer became our King Midas, jingling the class coins. Of course, everything Tom touched didn’t turn to gold! O, if it had! In the middle of the Junior journey the road became bumpy because of a new Student Council law. This law provided for a change in class officers. This was an upsetting procedure. We chose Ernestine Cowles, President; Dora Jean Springer, Secretary; and Sallie Finch to handle financial problems. We had all heard of wedding rings, but the idea of a Junior ring was too glamorous for words. Money poured from the family pocketbook into our treasury channel. Everyone was happy except Dad. We soon sported beautiful rings. Traveling was now smooth and easy. One day at the end of our Junior Year, Tommy Cheyer sauntered off with his scholar- ship to enter Columbia University. We missed you, Tom! The last lap of our journey was now in sight. Our Senior Year came all too soon. Great responsibilities lay along the highway. But we were to be guided by the officers of our Junior Year and our advisor Mr. Castle who proved to be very helpful at all times. Our aim now was to make ourselves acceptable citizens of the world. We felt grownup and important. We were ready to travel even though the road was rough and strange. The laboring on our yearbook melted into nothingness when we thought of the wonders to be revealed by it. Joy, oh joy! In January of ’52 we lined up for a Senior Play called Take Your Medicine. All eighteen Seniors were given a part in this three act, hilarious drama. Needless to say this play was an outstanding success under the direction of Edith McLenithen, Senior English teacher. A real journey was our happy fate. Washington, Mt. Vernon, and New York were before us. We never tired when work- ing to reach our goal. The memories of our Easter Trip will linger long after hearing and sight are dimmed. Commencement means beginning, but to us it means a parting. Our hearts will always be yearning to return the scenes of our high school years, to our class- mates, to our teachers and to our friends. So ends the long happy journey down the high school travel. 22 CLASS OF 1953 FIRST ROW: LORETTA SPELLBURG, LORRAINE ROBINSON, OSCAR WILLARD.
