Hoff, Class of 4940, student, coach, athletic director and inspiration, by the Class of 4980 and by all the students and staff your life has touched over the past years of your association with Haddon Heights High School. We thank you for your leadership, courage, and achieve- ment, and for your unselfish committment to your school and your nation. Mr. Hoff, who was born and raised in Glendora, entered Haddon Heights High School in 4936, and, although his last will in the Scribe of 4940 read, lVlr. Norman Hoff bequeathes his romantic ability to Jack Hughes. , spent most of his time achieving fame as a football player, track star, and class leader. He was captain of the undefeated football team of 4939. Known as Coach Baker's watch charm guard because he was smaller than most of the boys who played that position, Mr. Hoff's skill and spirit resulted in his being named to the Courier Post all-star Group 3 team in two successive years. ln the annual charity game between the Group 3 and Group 4 all-star teams, he recovered a fumble that led to his team's victory. ln his senior year he was named to the All-State team and was publically commended by football officials for his leadership and cooperation as team captain. He played both offense and defense on a team that scored 439 points that year to their opponents' two points. His track career was also notable. Specializing in the low hurdles, Mr. Hoff was the South Jersey low hurdles champion and set a school record that stood for thirteen years. He was co-captain of the track team in his senior year. But his interests were not limited to athletics. Mr. Hoff was elected sophomore class president, junior class vice-president, and Senate president. He was president of his Hi-Y group. He took two scholastic exams for a scholarship to Springfield College and was the only winner in the state of New Jersey. At Springfield Mr. Hoff continued to shine on the athletic field. He was co-captain of the freshman track team and a starter on the frosh football team. He started on the varsity football team in his sophomore and junior years, but his college career was interrupted by World War ll. Mr. Hoff left college to serve with units of the field artillery and infantry in Europe, where he achieved the rank of 4st Lieutenant and saw action in the Battle of the Bulge and the Rhineland campaign. After the war he left the service with the rank of Captain and returned to Springfield to finish his studies. He majored in physical education and received varsity letters in football and track, as well as serving as president of the Athletic Board. After graduating with a B.S. in 4947, Mr. Hoff went to Columbia University, where he received his M.A. degree. Mr. Hoff's teaching and coaching careers began at Horace Mann School and continued at Spartanburg, South Carolina, and Merchantville High School before he returned to Heights in 4952. At Heights Mr. Hoff coached football and baseball, and was named athletic director. During his years here Mr. Hoff has worked tirelessly in the interests of our sports teams, often lining the fields himself and always attending the home games to offer encouragement. His energy, good humor, and dedication to his job have been an inspiration to us all. . is .... .gy, j , ,, . Ns-
