THE SPIRIT OF FRIENDSHIP You're my friend - what a thing friendship is ... H 1-vw' .sb- '41 I i I '-ww Sponsored by the Women's Clubs of New Jersey, the GirI's Citizenship Institute is held at Douglass College during the second week in June. The girls, sent from Haddon Heights and Barrington, were QTOP ROWJ Terry Quinn, Phyllis Warnke, Lynn Garvey, Nancy Cavanaugh, QBOTTOM ROWQ Lee Albright, Gail Denber, and Emily Levy. Lectures on colleges, our futures as citizens, and the Bicentennial were an important part of the Institute, along with talent shows, making new friends, and fun. Our delegates described the week in one word - great!! SPIRIT OF CITIZENSHIP: E'VE GOT IT! Our delegates to the 1975 Girls' State Convention were QLEFTI Cathy Kline and Shirley Geerling. These girls are sponsored by the American Legion Women's Auxiliary for a week at Douglass College, New Brunswick. The delegates hold mock elections to learn about our voting systems. Both girls from 3HS really enjoyed the experience. Held at Rider College in June, the Boys' State Convention is based on the same theme as Girls' State - teaching today's teenagers about our system of elections and government. Our delegates are: ILEFTI Joe Castle and Bob Esoda. 'f 'f if 9 C ,.4.. if After a fine start the cross country team was hit by a large number of injuries and slipped to a 4-8 season, the worst in six years. Number one and two runners, Terry Drew and Ed Thurston, each missed a month of the season: at one time the three top runners were all on crutches. The only positive note to the season was the strong start and the fact that the entire team returns next year. Coach Gillum points out that much more participation is needed from this year's freshmen and sophomores ... the only criteria for being a member ofthe team is the willingness to work. Cross country would be glad to have prospective runners try their luck at the long distances. The cham- pionship torm of Heights Cross Country can return if the students participate. f -r T ..i. MM CLASS OF '76 - CLASS OFFICERS , Mlw Barbara Burrough - President Leslie Cook - Vice President Marilyn Knoettner - Secretary Susan Griffith - Treasurer The senior class officers this year deserve a great deal of credit for the work they have done. With the help of the class advisor, Mr. Palo, and Mr. String, they organized two class selling projects, the refreshment stand at the football games Qwhich was often rained outj and a lightbulb sale. These girls were responsible for keeping class re- cords and individual accounts in order. The sen- iors also did a beautiful job decorating the main hall for the holiday season. This year's senior class and its officers have shown they deserve the special recognition of a Bicentennial class. Each of the 24 contestants was selected for her scholar- ship, poise, appearance, talent, and leadership. Shirley participated in a get-acquainted party, the Junior Miss Thanksgiving Parade, and numerous re- hearsals leading to the final performance. The judg- ing was based on interviews, scholastic achieve- ment, an introduction by each girl, a dance routine, talent presentation, and an evening gown competi- tion. Shirley thoroughly enjoyed her experience as a Junior Miss and was proud to represent Haddon Heights in the pageant. 1. ,E+ my sv it .Wiz ,,,. She's our only student actually sponsored by the A.F.S. ... even though Ruben Missick, upper middle, has been here for the past two years, he does originally come from the Bahamas and is now residing in Lawnside with his family . .. Sku Kesh Chand, upper right, is one of our newer foreign students. She also lives here in Haddon Heights with her family, instead of having a specific sponsor. Her name might suggest her birth place as lndia but in reality she was born in Glasglow, Scotland of Indian parents ... Our Vietnamese Student, Tung Ngo, is shown here with Emmanuel Skufiaz, lower left. Tung was formerly a refugee of the war, in transit from Camp Pendleton to relatives in Florida, when he decided against leaving this area. So the Methodist Church of Haddan Heights offered to sponsor him, taking him under their collective wing, so to speak. Emmanuel, from Greece, lower right is being sponsored by the Youth for Understanding, a Greek Church group. While he's here, he's living with the Hickman family.
