People proud of their teams, no matter where they finish. A cheer for Mr. Hoff. The best girls, sports in the world. Why such devotion? Why Haddon Heights? No one listens to the orchestra but everyone Wants one. Why? Teachers spend hours each Week helping students who don't care. Why are they paid so little? Why a high school on 2nd 8z Garden? Loud times, quiet times. There's so much noise in the library. Study hall is for sleeping. Why do they cry at graduation? Why four years of my life? Freshmen, seniors, blacks, whites. Girls, hoods, friends, strangers. jews, Christians the concerned, those who donit care. Why are they here? Why H.H.H.S.? Why Haddon Heights? Too many students find out too late. GYM 0 X D3 In N A, L W' W A , LW QW Wf Dedication The administrative department of any school has a tremen- dous task in seeing that the educational needs of the students are fulfilled. The administrator must be able to meet many varied demands. He must be counselor, an organizer, an arbi- trator, a leader, a disciplinarian, and a listener. The adminis- trator must be constantly in touch with all the students of the school. The effective administrator does not alienate himself from the students. He works with the students - supervising tests, at games, at dances, in the Senate - wherever he is needed. He listens to suggestions and weighs them carefully. This man knows all the students and all the students know him. He is respected for his courage and fairness. There are many who can simply wget the job donen but there are only a few who can handle the situations which arise with diplomacy and a keen understanding of people. We, the class of 1969, in recognition of one of these few, dedicate the CARNETEER to you, Mr. Gamble. f 1 1 V , fu.-U... aa ta. ff 1 'l Mr. C-ansz AhM The job of a superintendent is a demanding one which re- quires great insight in dealing with the many problems he faces. This year saw a major change with the appearance of Mr. Herbert Gansz, our new Superintendent of Schools. On behalf of the entire student body, we would like to welcome Mr. Gansz to Haddon Heights with the hope that his future years in this school system will be as rewarding as this first year has been. 12 Q XX f X My W -X Q. 5 X ,,AC5' . They played to the best of their abilities but lack of experience and quirks of mis- fortune produced a disappointing season with seven losses and only two wins. The team did provide their fans with many exciting moments of good football. The Sterling and Haddonfield games were both heart- breaking thrillers. Senior co-captains Lou Heckroth, who pushed his way for eight TD's, and Sammy Funch- es, who kicked a perfect conversion record of fifteen for fifteen and the first successful field goal in HHHS for many years, along with junior halfback Mike Di- Marco, were the Garnet's leading scorers. Next year should be brighter as there will be twelve returning lettermen, twice as many as this year. We will lose the talents of fancy runner, Ed Klinck, big defense- axj .. man Dave Robinson, quarterback Rick Madden, Ron Stagliano, Tom Ertle, Larry Gollub, Harold Conaway, and Alvis Vaughn. The l.V. fought with all their might but were over- powered and held to a 2-5 record. Under the guidance of Coach Masenheimer, some outstanding players were developed and readied to move into the varsity positions left by the parting Seniors. The frosh football team of '68 finished their season with an impressive total of nine wins and one loss, which came at the hands of Paulsboro's Raiders , This powerful team beat Collingswood, Washington Town- ship, Haddon Township, and Audubon by shut-outs. Mr. Zubrack's team will make a welcome addition to the j.V. and Varsity teams next year. OL550 1 Football Mr. Stoltz, Mr. Panesis, Mr. Masenheimer, Mr. Luongo, Mr. Lazevnick fax, FIRST ROW: T. Nonetheless, his hopes are well-founded - Don Train, a sophomore who earned four first places for the Garnets this year and freshman Ralph Reamer give the team great potential for future seasons. The high point of this season came with a 35-22 win over Edgewood High School. Dave Miller was team captain. Luck just wasn't on their side as they lost five of their games by only one goal. The climax of the season came when they handed the undefeated Cherry Hill West Team their first and only defeat of the year. Outstanding players leanne Eklund, Leslie Marriot, Debbie McCollum, Sandy Sloan, and Nancy Stevens, along with underclassmen Kathy Dunne, Khris Foster, and high scorer Charlotte Lent, combined their talents for an exciting funfilled season. The turning point for the team was the 3-2 win over previously undefeated john F. Kennedy High. Last year this was the only team that beat Haddon Heights. The varsity team then went on to five more wins end- ing with a 6-4-4 record. The most disappointing defeat was a 3-2 loss to Sterling in the quarter-finals of the State Tour- nament. Outstanding Seniors leading this year's team were George DuBois, Al Rehberger, Carl Rutledge, and Frank Sanske. This year's high scorer was sophomore Charlie White. In the opinion of the coach, Mr. Wallen, inexperience hurt the team most. With two regular season games left to play, the team had 9 wins and 5 losses in Colonial Conference Competition, plus 4 wins and 1 loss in non-conference games. There were sev- eral distinguished players this year. Doug Miller, a sophomore, received the second highest number of votes for the Confer- ence All-Star Team. He was the leading scorer and the leading rebounder. With at least 3 games left to play, including play- offs, Doug was only 8 points short of the Height's record for points earned in a sin- gle season. Roy Franke, a junior, made the second All-Star team. Team captain lon Wheeler, and sophomore Ken Lukhard received honorable mention. The team . was young, starters usually included three sophomores and two juniors. Mr. Wallen believes that the next two years will be memorable ones. Higgins. Al- though relatively young, with only one return- ing Varsity player, the team lost only three games. Heights placed second in the Colonial Conference. On offense were Helene Conaty, Kathy Dunne, Georgia Fehlinger, Khris Foster, Diane Guida and Dorothy Ronketty. Guards were captain leanne Eklund, Donna Rushin, and janet Venables. Perhaps the most decisive game was a two point loss to Audubon during overtime. The girls made a valiant effort to cap- ture first place but were defeated in a tense game against Haddon Township. The j.V. team proved themselves by completing an undefeat- ed season. These girls will certainly be an asset to next year's Varsity team. iq-.- VARSITY: FIRST ROW: Mrs. Goodwin, D. Guida, G. Swimming The boys Swimming Team had a suc- cessful season this year. Mr. Kerr was this year's new coach. The team had several outstanding swimmers. Captain Ken An- derson, co-captain lim Ripple, and soph- omore Mike Bomgardner had high stand- ing in the South jersey competition. Ken placed fifth in the 100 meter butterfly. lim was second in the 100 meter breaststroke, and Mike placed fifth in the 100 meter backstroke. With nine returning letter- men and the advantage of a better prac- tice schedule, next year's team should be even stronger. The girls swimming team had another fine season this year. Co-captains Debbie McCollunl and Ellen McGarvey led Wal- len's Whales in their victories. Other seniors, Leslie Marriot, lean Page, and underclassmen Kimm Groff, Leslie Mc- Collum, and Patrice McDermott, were valuable members of the team. v utlifc se V MU' 17 N ,f hw if fi' In . -.sg I alfa . an W so, g , . 1 -Ms T , s ,sp , 4 3 -- V 7 , I - --qk -- .QM ,naw ,-k- ,I - ,K ' ' tit, , '.,. Under the direction of coach Fred Masen- heimer, this year's Varsity Team has compiled a record of one win and eleven losses. The enthusiasm, the drive, and the tremendous effort of these boys has greatly surpassed that of previous years. Three problems handicapped this year's team, a small turnout, a lack of experience, and a rash of injuries early in the season. The freshman were faced by new situations but they soon adapted to high school life. Teased and trampled, the Frosh persisted and gave their contribution to the school through aca- demic and athletic achievements. Senators and student leaders carried out their duties with enthusiasm. The stu- dents worked hard to earn money for the class by selling combs, toothbrushes and candy. The council consists of six black students and six white students representing each of the four classes. In addition, there is a liaison officer who serves as a link between the Interracial Council and the Senate. The members meet with faculty advisors to discuss problems which arise. After careful consideration of a problem the council makes recommendations to the Senate. This year the council held several open meet- ings, providing an opportunity for the entire student body and faculty to join in discussions. Although the Interracial Council is young and has made many mis- takes, it is at least a beginning-a step forward to help to make Haddon Heights a better school for all of us. L. Henderson, E. The pep rallies were exciting and fun for the students, while at the same time provided our teams with the moral support that is important to any team's success. Spirit adds something extra to the school. Spirit is the go -factor and the Pep Club helps provide that spirit. This year the Varsity cheerleading squad, under the direction of co-captains Kathy Colgan and Pat Miskey, with its never-ending enthusiasm, gave tremendous moral support to the team by leading the Heights fans in vigorous cheers. They began training at a summer cheerleading camp in the Poconos and brought home three ribbons and an honorable mention. The band livens up our football games, pep rallies, and parades with quick-stepping tunes, play- ing either marching songs or popular music. Student conduc- tors Mike Hoffman and Steve Roberts gained valuable experi- ence by aiding Mr. Darby at half- time during football games. The dance band, better known as Darby's Raiders , meets once a week and is made possible by the singular effort of Mr. Darby. One of the best ways for the individual student to keep in touch with the activities of the student body as a whole is through the school newspaper. The Scribe editors headed by Holly Weiss and Barbara Gor- don, Editors-in-Chief, worked determinedly to make this year's paper better than ever. Not only did the paper contain the usual reports on club activi- ties and sport stories but also interesting articles on new teachers, student stand-outs and literary contributions from the student body. 79 i my im Cafeteria Workers Office Workers 80 Lab Assistants s Tmlm ,, i ff-'EMW-fi. , AA NWN ' V A Sw, 3 , , Ass ,guys Monitors 81 1 , s. ig . leffrey Davidson - Editor-in-Chief Elizabeth Schmid - Assist.
