Tracie Russo, '83, showing good form in her butterfly stroke. ln only the third season ot competition, the girls' varsity swim team continues to possess both a winning record and state tinalist swimmers. The Cougars' record this year was 8-4-1, The swimmers iaced a challenging schedule of meets, and managed to win twice as many as they lost this year. The team was a very young one, with only two seniors and a total ot ten freshmen. 1981 proved to be a year ot im- proved depth, however, as the Cougars won some very close meets, such as Middletown, where the score ended 86-85 in favor of H-K. The inexperience of the younger swimmers was not evident, as great teamwork and spirit pulled the squad together for a season ot victory. The final and most important meet was against Hand of Madison. This meet ended in a tie after a series of mishaps which sur- prised both teams. The 200-yard medley relay team of Wen- dy Lapham, Tracie Russo, Elizabeth Meyer and Gretchen Weiss placed eighth in the state finals, and senior co- captain Wendy Lapham placed eleventh in the 50-yard freestyle and tenth in the 100-yard backstroke. Junior diver Kristina Schreck finished ninth in the finals this year. Freshman diver Kathy Jones qualified for states but tailed to make the final round. The 4x 100 yard relay team of Gret' chen Weiss, co-captain Diane Cernan, Tracie Fiusso and Elizabeth Meyer also qualified, but did not advance to the finals. H-K finished eleventh in the Class M State Finals, in competition with twenty-four teams. ln three short years, the girls swim team has established itself as a consistently improving team, and 1981 is another in a series of winning seasons and state ranked athletes.
