Boys Hold lass S Title Most people see cross country as an almost completely individual sport. in isome cases this may be true, but the 1981 boys' cross country team proved lthat teamwork can accomplish goals. L This year's accomplishments were phenomenal. The Cougars carried an lundefeated season, then went on to become Shoreline Conference champs, land finally, established themselves as the best Class S team in the state for fthe second year in a row. 5 The Cougars were 10-0 in their dual season schedule, and estimated that altogether they beat about fitty teams this year. There are only eight teams in fthe state that can beat them. The Shoreline Championship was only the first step to the state title, but by using their unique strategy, the Cougar pack spirit which is used to amass the highest number of points possible, the Cougars overcame everyone else, and junior Sean Armstrong placed first in the entire race. The final victory was the Class S state crown. The Cougars placed tive run- ners in the top twenty-five. Their final score was sixty-six, and the team beneath them ended with one hundred and nineteen points. This was quite a difference in score, and was an indication ofthe height at which H-K excelled above the rest. Like any team, the H-K pack has memories. Things such as swift and silent warriors, long runs and summer training, P.Fi.s, Gunger Hill Workouts, and the immortal Mad Joe and Crazy Witty will stay with them always. Because of the outstanding talent, effort, teamwork and spirit the cross country team possessed, they were rewarded not only with titles, but also .with pride. Coach Dupuis said it welt when he stated: Individuals win awards, teams win championships. 1: N. Wheaton, E. Sodergren, M. Peterson, S. Armstrong. Row 2: Coach M. Sodergren, M. Wheaton, D. Koekkoek. Row 3: B. Johnson, M. Hoehn, S. The most important and successful meet of the season for the 1981 boys' cross country team was the Class S State Championship. The squad finished with sixty-six points, far ahead of the rest ofthe competition. Senior co-captain Mark Peterson finished a strong third, followed by junior Sean Armstrong in sixth place. Senior co-captain Eric Sodergren turned in a sixteenth place, and freshman Neil Wheaton placed nineteenth. Junior Scot Leavitt, who is H-K's fifth runner, finished twenty-second, and managed to beat all the other competitors third runners in this Cougar dominated race. At any other school an H-K runner would be an individual star, but at Haddam-Killingworth, he's just another talented member of the pack. This con- centration of gifted athletes allowed the Cougars to sweep, for the second year in a row, the title of Class S State Champions. ti' nv . N ig, Egftffi . f--4 1 JJ ., . They came from behind to defeat the in- dians by one point. Valley has been a rival for the girls, trading wins for the past four years. The win was a good start for the girls, giving them incentive for the rest of the season. The girls, being smaii in number, had to make up in strength what they did not have in. size. Unfortunately the strengths of this year's two seniors occurred at different times. Janet Carley had her strong season last year and Nancy had hers this season. Had the timing been the same, the girls could have accounted for a bet- ter record. Though the team will be without these girls next year, it wilt be proud to have returning Junior Kate English, an already proven runner. Row 1: D. Kleinschmidt, N. Winschel, K. English, J. Carley. H-ll WINS SEGDND PLAGE IN SHDRELINE The history of Cougar Volleyball remains a successful one. This is best proved by this year's 11-7 record, Coach Langer's sixth winning season. Going into its fifteenth game of the season, against North Branford, H-K was tied for second place in the Shoreline. The North Branford game was the highlight of our season, commented Senior Captain Kristen Van Saun. in the first game, North Branford won 15-103 the second game H-K won 15-8, and the third game North Branford won 16-8. The interesting partewas when North Branford was winning 13-7, and we made a comeback to win 16-143' she acl- ded. The Cougars could not have made the comeback without team members Sue Kleinschmidt, Carla Marino and Wendy Gigiio. Their efforts, combined with those of Van Saun and the rest of the team, ted the Cougars to a fifth game, 15-13 win, and an eventual second place finish, leaving North Branford in their trail for third place.
