Derby was leading the Cougars one to nothing through the first four innings. ln the top of the fifth H-K scored four runs. Paula Fletcher opened the inning with a single to center field. Julie Casey placed a sacrifice hunt down third which was misplayed by the Derby third baseman: however, Fletcher was thrown out at third trying to take an extra base. Carla Marino then tripled to left, scoring Casey and tying the game. Carla scored on Laura Lucas' infield ground out. Cariey, Staples, Swiney and Kuchyt then singled to score the Cougars' third and fourth runs of the inning. ln the top of the sixth, Fletcher grounded out, Casey singled, Marino sacrificed her to second and Julie scored on Lucas' double to rightlcenter field. ln the seventh, the Cougars added an insurance run when Swiney singled to left with one out. Bridget Prete was put in as a pinch runner. Bridget went to second on a wild pitch, ad- vanced to third on Ftobin Kuchyt's ground out, and scored on a Liz Meyer single to center. Finai - H-K 6, Derby 1 . . . State Championship here we come . . . The Cougars were denied the State Championship and were the 1981-82 Runners-up. After compiling a Shoreline record of 11-2, Division l, the team became the Class 'M' Division ll champions. The girls lost the final game to St. Joseph's of Trumbull to com- plete the season with a record of 20-5. Four members of the team were honored by being chosen to All-State and All-Shoreline teams. Robin Kuchyt made the All-Shoreline first team as a first baseman, with Laura Lucas isecond basel, Holly Swiney lcatcherl, and Julie Casey fpitcherl named members of the second team.
