Although by not such a wide margin as the 1981 game, the end result was the same: a heartbreaking loss for H-K, this year to Granby. This loss is brutally hard lor them fthe players! to accept. especially the seniors, commented Coach Brookes. A lot of these kids are seniors. They were there last year. Une senior in particular. Kevin Yantosh. pitched the entire eleven lrmings of the game. finishing the season with an 8-2 record and e place in the Class S State Team. The Cougars, who ended the season 21-4, scored twice in the sixth with the help of two Granby errors. With one out, Carmelo Rosa hit a grounder to third. Granby third baseman Ken La- Pent fielded it cleanly, but threw lt wide to first, putting Rosa at second. The next batter, Brian Grabek, tapped one back to the pitcher, who turned to throw out Rosa, heading for third. Another wild throw: score, H-K 1, Granby 0. One out later, Chuck 'Nlcklas singled home C-trebek to make lt 2-0. Wlth two outs in the bottom of the eighth, Granby was able to battle back with the help of an H-K error ln the field. A close call in the bottom of the ninth almost secured he Granby victory two innings early. Wlth the bases loaded and none out. pitcher Mike Grecey tined one beck to lvantosh. One out, The next batter attempted a suicide squeeze hunt and missed. Catcher Mike DeFrancesco tagged out the runner comming home from third, and ran toward the runner caught between first and second, leaving the plate unguarded. ln the nick ,ol time, he threw to first baseman Nlcklas who tagged the runner out. Three outs. However, in the bottom of the eleventh with one out, Granby had run- ners on llrst and second After a strikeout, Rick Orluk singled home the wlnn- ing run, handing H-K its second defeat ln two tries. Coaches on both sides had, ofcourse, different outlooks on the game. The Granby coach, Blll Stacy, was very happy, claimed to have little part ln the game, and was proud of the execution of his players. Brookes, on the other hand, had to find e way to motivate his players for the upcoming Shoreline championship game. Now l've get to go out there and tell them something.
