Established in 1977, this small group of parents has assisted many groups and organizations in attaining goals which would other- wise not be possible. The Boosters have purchased books for the library, hosted the after-graduation receptions, established the Student-Athlete Scholar- ship, made possible a cheerleading squad for the fall, assisted in the acquisition of equipment for various teams, supported all sports banquets, and helped put the Opticon on sound financial footing. The Boosters represent a positive involvement of members of the community in the school system - an involvement which enriches all of us and which we hope will grow in the years to come. Work began on the 1980 edition of Opticon in March of 1979 and ended in July of 1980 with the completion of the summer supplement. Without the dedication and perseverance of a relatively small number of people on the staff, who often made considerable personal sacrifices, this book could not have been completed. Other individuals in the Region 17 community - students, faculty, parents, and merchants - have contributed to the publishing of this edition through their financial and moral support, and, most of all, by meeting our sometimes unreasonable requests with cooperation, cheerfulness, and promptness. In particular, we would like to thank those individuals who graciously overlooked the mysterious disappearance and even reappearance of supplies and other items. We hope that you will enjoy Opticon 1980 and that it will be a source of fond memories for years to come. ia -. N Q ,Ak Advisor, Lew Traester Assistant Editor, Julie Schreck .f-'fd Editor. . . The team's record was only l-12-l, but six of the Cougars games were one goal games. The Cou- gars were proud to place four members on the honorable mention All-Shoreline Team. They were senior co-captains Kevin King, and Bob Broach, senior Chris Knowlton, and sophomore Andrew Klein-Robbenhaar. The team showed great improvement throughout the year, and its members look to the near future for some suc- cessful campaigns. The 1979 Varsity Field Hockey Team was comprised of sixteen energetic girls: five seniors, ten juniors, and a sophomore. The girls, led by Coach Lemley, had a rewarding and successful season and played with IOOKZQ effort in every game. The team motto, We can if we think we can, characterized team efforts to achieve individual and team goals. The team's overall record was 8-5-3, one point from a qualifying record for Shoreline Competition but good enough for the States. In the first game against Som- ers, the Cougars lost in overtime in a penalty stroke situation. This season the team concentrated on shots-on-goal and offensive and defensive corners. According to statistics, the girls took 182 offensive corners and had 105 taken against them. Goalie Nicole O'De1l made 71 saves, and the girls had 289 shots on goal com- pared to 166 taken against them. The team accumu- lated 20 goals this season. Senior captains Louise Wright, Nicole O'Dell and Teri DeMars and seniors Kathy King and Julie Schreck provided strong leadership. Louise Wright made All-Shoreline and became the first H-K athlete to make an All-State team. Forward Kathy King made All-Shoreline Honorable Mention and was the team's highest scorer. Forward Teri DeMars was the second highest scorer while Julie Schreck and Shan- non Brasky led the backfield defense. Ten seniors will be returning next year along with one returning jun- ior, Patricia Wright. The 1980 captains will be Ste- phanie Fine and Elisa Howes. 4 23 VAR ITY FOOTBALL lu I W- Row 1: W. Although the team's record was dis- appointing, its members never gave up. The players exhibited good sportsmanship and found that long hours of work paid off in the games. The team improved steadily during the season, and should be a strong foundation for future varsity teams. The Freshman Team played extremely well this year, compiling a 6-l-l record. The HK Freshmen were able to dominate play in their games as they strove for victory. 55' as -A N FRESHMAN F OOTB LL Row 1: A. Bosco. S. Darling, G. Narducci, C. Johnson, K. Foreman, S. Harlow, B. The team capped its season with a third place finish in the Class S State Championship thus earning the right to run in the state open. The success of the team was so much a product of a total team effort that it would be difficult to select one or two runners as a key factor. Senior captain Joe Brasky had a fine season leading the team in scoring, being elected to the all conference team, and placing fourth in the Class S State Championship. Sophomore Eric Sodergren also was elected to the all conference team. Seniors Ron Kleinschmidt and Mark Harrison were the team's consistent performers who also turned in fine efforts in the clutch races. Sophomore Mark Peterson showed the most improvement during the season and was a vital part of the team's state ranking. Freshmen Sean Armstrong and Scott Leavitt showed great potential and worked their way to the 6th and 7th spots on the varsity thus earn- ing varsity letters in their freshman year. It was the first day of field hockey For the HK Girls Team The assistant coach arrived Quite new on the scene. It is I of whom I'm speaking, From Wesleyan and excited Introducing myself to the wrong team, This is volleyball, Not field hockey! With a start such as that How could I go wrong? But the talent abounded, Some thirty-odd strong. First, Learning The Circle And positions that rotate Switching around Diana Giurintano Play seven, no, let's try eight! And moving first clockwise When the ball's on the right But also Counterclocking . . . Trying with all of your might. To teach 19 underclassmen For me was a thriller. Let's see where should I begin? Well, how about with Miss Miller . . . Sarah M. gave her all And in games she would shine. She saw her fair share Of injuries, eight or nine! Our two second-year players Helped out quite a bit. Denise D., our goalie, Just never would quit. Denise T., at back, Was steady and sure. She cheered her team on against all, be assured. It was Barbara's first year playing, Tracy Rutty's first too. They both learned quite quickly Playing number six and number two. Aggressive is the word Which befits especially one Quite enthusiastic young player Named Laurie Zupan. Hannah and Bitty were co-captains. They led us through the fall To a fine winning season 5-4-3 in the Shoreline, 7-6-3 in all. Tracy Pitt and Laura Lucas Were hardly ever apart. They each had a share in the scoring effort. Leigh was quite steady As fullback, left or right. Too bad there were so many, Yet never did they fight. Rain' Johnson played a strong seven And really would strive For that perfect left-hand tackle And a shoulder collision with a drive! Tammy B. played as forward With skill and great speed. Once she called out to be subbed, But I didn't heed, Some nice rotations were made By Tammy McDuell and Tracey Munson They both learned to cross-get a goal As their major intention. The names were confusing. They'd look and ask who? I'd reply with Hannah, no Hah-na, Well, how about just you! Cheering on Jennifer Haesche Playing left wing with desire: Now run to your left And rush, then aim higher. And Colleen H. in goal Was really a slight sight. She saved goals all over the place, on the left and the right. So that's my JV team, And a team it really was With a capital T And one common cause . . . To go out on the field, And give it their all, To have a great time, And still get the ball! Thanks, you girls, parents and Patsy each and every one For a season filled with memories And most of all, fun. - A. Chatinover, Assistant Coach GIRLS GYMNASTICS Qnnmc Row 1: T. Ricciuti, G. After two years of hard work with coach Carl Cavrell, the Cougars came into their own this year. With the entire team returning from last year, the tumblers broke several school records and achieved state recognition in several areas. No longer an easy meet for their competitors, the Cougars finished the year with a 12-2 record and came in 3rd in the Shoreline division and 6th in State Class M. Half the team qualified for post season individual competition in the State Regional Meet. Senior Captain Robin Chapman qualified in all her events fvault, beam and floorj as did Denise Gesick fvault and barsj, the only other senior. Junior Tracy Wagner qualified on vault and bars, while junior Barbara Washburn qualified on bars also. Kyle Ott, a sophomore, qualified on vault and floor. Led by these state qualifiers, sophomores Tina Copp, Nora O'Meara and Tina Riccuiti, junior Joann Speicher, and freshman Gina Chiarella all scored valuable points each meet, contributing to a successful year.
