By fast team work that Coach Engelman had pounded into the Hornets, Hackley subdued Trin- ity 3-0 with Ernie Alvarez guarding the cage with the help in the backfield of Gus Koeningsberger, Captain Box Sanborn, and Louis Russ. The Greenwich game proved to Hackley that its soccer team was fast, aggressive, and alert. Punchy Paul Vernes made a goal with the help of Ignacio Artinano, which brought on the defeat of Greenwich 2-0. The other goal was made by Roumboulakis. George wheres my glasses Bishop, Mo Alva- rez, and Al Acosta kept the ball well down in enemy territory during the Columbia Grammar game. The team had won one of its fastest games plowing through Columbia Grammar's defense and winning 6-0. In the biggest, roughest, and fastest game of the season, Hackley waved a flaming torch of vic- torious assault against Bronxville High School. With da Cunha and Edwardo Artinano hampering Bronx- ville at every chance, Hackley came forward from a dencient to a 3-3 tie at the end of regular play. In overtime, the Hornets, with da Cunha scoring two goals, crushed Bronxville's defense and won the game 5-3. The last minutes of the game were played in darkness, but by good ball handling, the team was able to score twice. The next team we met was Riverdale, a team that had only lost one game and was supposed to be one of the better teams. The first half was played in the center of the field with neither team being able to score, but in the first minutes of the third quarter Riverdale scored. In the remaining time Hackley retaliated with four goals to win the game 4-l. The game was fast and furious, but the Hornets with their swiftness of foot and power were able to outflank Riverdale. I-lackley journed twice to New York City. Mc- Burncy tried unsuccessfully to break up the close- knit team work that Hackley had established. McBurney was baffled by the speed of Mo Alvarez and Ignacio Artinano and lost 3-0, Later in the season Hackley played Birch Walthem, but after twenty minutes of play the game was called off, because of rain, with Hackley leading 3-0. At the conclusion of the season, Mo Alvarez, Ignacio Artinano, and Punchy Paul Vernes made the All-Metropolitan soccer team. The soccer team this year was comprised of boys from many different parts of the world: Greece, England, Spain, Iran, and Latin America. You might call this team a league of nations be- cause of their ability to work together and at the same time have team spirit which was one of the prime factors of our capacity to win the games we played. A team can only win when it has the support of the members-this might be applied to nations as well. Next year the Varsity plans to have as good a team if not better because of the boys coming up from the junior Varsity. Derrick Van Etten and Edwardo Artinano havebeen elected co-captains for next year. The team of '51 wishes the team of '52 the best of luck. It was a banner day for Scott Pierson who took firsts in the 40-yard freestyle and the individual medley and closed a lead in the freestyle relay to enable that group to gain its fourth straight win. Plagued by illness and unable to obtain a post- ponement, a dispirited Hackley team met powerful Peekskill High on their home ground. With three members missing, Hackley was never in the meet. The-'final score was a crushing 57-9. With three losses, one tie, and but one win many teams might have given up the ghost, but the Hackley swimmers simply settled down to more intensive preparation for their home meet with Fieldston. The Hackley team was well-conditioned for the Fieldston meet and swam away with individual honors. The visiting team was surprisingly strong in the relays, however, and the deciding event was the individual medley which, at the request of the Fieldston coach, was held last. Pierson and Kelly seized first and second in this event. For Pierson it was the second first of the day, and he, was followed by Kohns, Kelly and Waring-all of whom captured their events. The rejuvenated Hornets easily toppled rival Riverdale 41-25. Stevenson, Kelly and Pierson again took firsts, as did the freestyle relay team, and Hackley swimmers were much evident as run- ners-up. Visiting Newark Academy proved io be a strong opponent and overpowered a somewhat disabled Hackley team, 57-29. Only Costabel, Wfaring and the freestyle relay team could capture hrsts, but for Waring it was a record-breaking accomplish- ment. The Hackley captain swam a lIOl.9 to set a new school record for the 100-yard freestyle. Illness completely robbed the Hornets of their chances in the P. ek P. S. A. A. meet. It was necessary to scratch most of the Hackley entries. The only bright spot for the Tarrytown team was Waring's third in the 100-yard freestyle. Mamaroneck was the visitor in the final home meet. Still convalescing, the Hackley swimmers went down to a 44-22 defeat. Waterfall, Waring and Pierson took firsts, but the Hornets could not match the Mamaroneck relay teams. With a record of 3-1-5, the Hackley team was looking forward to a final victory over Horace Mann. The season's outcome was not outstanding but better than pre-season forecasts. More assuring is the outlook for the future. Only Boon and Captain Waring will be lost to the team through graduation, and an improving group of juniors QLord, Stevenson, Kelly, Luce, Williams, Kohnsj remain to carry the load next year. Sophomores Rocke and Hutchinson may hold promiseg and Scott Pierson has already proved his worth. The brightest vision is that inspired by the Freshman contingent of Wiiterfall, Meier, Costabell and Van Steenberg-all of whom have shown their merit in varsity competition. The team has demonstrated industry and spirit. In the future, they should have the victories to show for their efforts. Leif In riglwr, mfr mu-Mr. Lewis, Gesner. Catsakis. Webster fCaptainJ. VARSITY FENCING HE Hackley varsity fencing team started the 1951-52 season with some experience and a great amount of optimism, then ended their winter season by placing second in the Westc'hester Foil Tournament and by winning tive of their six meets. Under Captain Donald Webster and old- timer Ruppert Lovely the newcomers were indoc- trinated in the mechanics of this ancient, gentle- manly endeavor, and soon the primary amorphus group was working in two distinct sections. hibiting the necessary prowess several newcomers to the sport were moved to thc Htirst-string posi- tion, and newcomer Captain-elect 'lames Ridgeway fenced in six of the cc-.icons eight matches, Both Webster and Lovely competed in all eight matchesg and the other competitors were Henry Lambcrt. The following successful meets were with McBurney 6-5, Pleasantville 7-2, and Storm King 6-5. The season was climaxed by the squads competition in the Westchester Tourna- ment. In this we defeated McBurney 6-5, in the qualifying meet: and then were defeated by River- dale 8-1, in the final meet, thus taking second place. As a summary view of the season a few statis- tical figures may speak more eloquently than or- dered prose, For the competitive school season Captain Wfebster had the admirable average in competition of .9-I-t. and the other stand-by Lovely. attained the equally enviable average of .82-48 in his matches. Not only was the lfencing Squad the only Varsity team to break the .500 mark with their .855 record, but it was also the fast growing Varsity sport of the season, having started with nc xt to no ecluipment at all. and ending the season as a well appointed team. A very successful season was enjoyed by all involved from coach dow n to the rawest beginner. and we all look forward to an equally enjoyable season next year. May Zh SZ. lJeIt.'I'is Axsai TRACK - HE track season of 1952 opened on March 31 with quite a large squad of enthusiastic but inexperienced candidates for the team. Captain Bob MacKenzie, high jumper and sprinter, and Bob Philippe, weight thrower, were the only two letter men from last year's excellent team and, with Keith Russell and Dave Williams, distance men from the second team, composed the rather small nucleus for Hackleys 1952 varsity. With this green squad to work with, one of. the hardest jobs of the coaches is to pick out who are best htted for what particular event. Until after time trials, it will be hard to say much about the prospects for the year. Roughly, however, in the sprints, Bob Mac- Kenzie, Ignacio Artinano, Terry Wilson, Alan Lord, Ivan Mader and Alvaro Acosta appear to be the best of the bunch. In the 440 are John McCarroll, Philip Atha- nassoulas, Punchy Vernes, Nick Catsakis, Artinano and Peter Deutsch. In the mile are Ruppert Lovely, Doug Gamble. and Russell. In the half mile are Dick Hutchinson, Dave Williams, Lee Kohns, Al Kelly and German Gomez. The high jumpers are MacKenzie. Panayotis Roumboulakis, Dav: Hempstead and Derek Van Etten. The pole vaulters are Acosta, Ken VC'hittaker. Manoochehr Sabouri and Van Etten, and the weight men, Mader, Philippe, Kelly and Bill McDowell. So far no broad jumpers or hurdlers seem to have been discovered. THE I-IILLTOP HOTOGRAPHY Editors Gus Koenigsberger and George Bishop really did a wonderful job in handling the photography work. They took practically all the group pictures as well as all the snaps. They spent many sleepless nights printing and developing pictures for the Hilllop. Paul Vernes, our artist, should be thanked for the wonderful drawings. Without Secretary Hugh Mahatiie and crew of typists joe Coons, Tom Pulliam, Stephen Weiss, and Martin Stearns, we would not have made the deadline with such ease. Special thanks to joe and Martin, who voluntarily offered their services. The Hilllnp wishes to thank the parents, boys and faculty members for their cooperation in make ing this year-book a success. This year's Hilltop may not be the largest ever published, but we think it is the finest in the schools history. Despite the financial dithculties early in the year, we had little trouble in meet- ing the deadline. Don Webster, Sandy Weidenborner, and Mr. MacArthur should be given most of the credit for our success. Don, our editor-in-chief, and Mr. Mac. were mainly responsible for arranging the assignments and getting the book to press with much time to spare. Sandy, as Business Manager, along with the Advertising Managers, Hank Lam- bert and Stephen Weiss, is responsible for man- aging the financial mood. Thanks go to Tommy Thompson, Lower School and Freshman Editor, Gordon Luce and Langdon Stevenson, junior Editors, and Chiu Kwan, Asso- ciate Editor. Tommy did most of the writing on the Lower School as well as rallying the Lower School boys to get ads while Gordon, Langdon, and Chiu did a large part of the write-ups. ale WS , 1. THE COMMUNITY COUNCIL HE Community Council, under the new school constitution of Hackley, has proved to be a more versatile instrument for the governing of the student body since it no longer has under its jurisdiction the handling of the disciplinary cases. The Community Council is based upon equality for the Hackley Community, both student and faculty. The Council is composed of a total of fifteen members: the President and Vice-President of the student body, four faculty members, and nine elected students representing each class in the school. 5 The responsibilities of the Community Council are to enact and enforce all student legislation, to regulate the Common Room, to suggest improve- ments in the social and educational life at Hackley, and to supervise all the elections which involve the community as a whole. The student members of the Community Coun- cil until mid-term were: George Bishop, '52, School President, john Hauser, '52, Vice-Presi- dent, Eddie Wilson, '52, Ruppert Lovely, '52, Al Lord, '53, john McCarroll, '53, Bill McDowell, '54, Bob Gesner, '54, john Waterfall, '55, and Kenney Sothern, '56. Those who were elected to the Council in the mid-term elections are: Phil Lubetkin, '54, 'lim Ridgeway, '55, Gordon Luce, '53, Buzz Robinson, '52, and Murry Kemp, '57. The faculty members are Mr. L. Miller, Mr. Lind- say, Dr. Bisbee, and Mr. MacArthur. Mr. F. Miller, headmaster, attends all the meetings ex- officio, and is limited to the right of unanimous agreement. Besides the more serious matters taken up by the Council this year, it sponsored a dance which proved to be very successful. Since the Council no longer has to deal with disciplinary cases, it has been able to make more constructive suggestions for the development of the school. N 'x l'l,'lllllliM1, ff f f X N f -A 'L--Q ivy, , X H 1 Ai- , Si, To S .Q UE to the excellent development of the Social Service Committee by the previous chaplain, Mr. Fitzsimmons, the group was able to start constructive work as soon as its services were required. A single call for members resulted in a total of nineteen boys, representing all the classes in the Upper School and one boy, Peter Graham, from the Lower School. The first task of the Committee was the dis- tribution of pledge cards which allowed the stu- dents and faculty to signify their annual contri- butions to such organizations as the Red Cross, Cancer Society, The Tuberculosis Association, the Community Chest, and the World Student Service Fund. By this means students are given a method of assuming the responsibilities of a citizen. A hasty but necessary drive for clothes resulted in many pounds of clothing for underprivileged children in Korea. SOCIAL SERVICE COMMITTEE We have had one social gathering at which Mr. Brooks, the chaplain, shexxed :movies and refresh- ments were served. Alan Lord presided at the meeting, and the committee decided to raise money to be sent to the World Student Ser'-'ite Fund in Burma. This spring, Gilbert and Sullivan's The Mi- kado was put on by Hackley students and other interested persons of the Tarrytowns. The profits from this production were given to the Com- munity Camp. The Community Camp is a camp sponsored by Hackley, for which the Social Service Committee raises the money. It needs approximately S1300 a year to operate. The camp runs for two weeks for the underprivileged boys of the Tarrytowns. Counselors are chosen from the junior and senior classes at Hackley. In May, the Committee works on a fair to be held at the track field. There are refreshment con- cessions and an auction. The proceeds from this will also go to the Community Camp. The Social Service Committee is one of the finest organizations in the school, as can clearly be seen by the number of students participating in its activities. It serves as a link between the community and the school. President of the Com- mittee is Alan Lord. LL if lu np! 1. Inj: run Nc- lmtlic. Dcutstlf. Allen, W'eb- stcr. l..uubc-rr. BQARD OF DEACONS HE Board of Deacons already had been chosen by the time the new chaplain arrived in the fall term. The Board of Deacons is the student organization concerned with developing interest in the chapel and its activities as a main focal point on the campus. The members of the board are responsible for the chapel ushers and all other duties connected with the chapel service. The Deacons are continuing and extending the discussion groups with students from Master's School in Dobbs Ferry. This year Hackley is looking for more contact with New England Schools. Therefore, three stu- dents went to the Preparatory School Conference at Northfield, Massachusetts. This well-known annual meeting took place over the weekend of November 30. The students who attended came back with a great deal of enthusiasm and left behind a very good impression of the school. There will be another conference at Buck Hills Falls, Pennsylvania. This conference will give more boys an opportunity to gain experience in a religious atmosphere. l s XZGXQ y Late in April, the Board of Deacons is planning a religious conference sponsored by Hackley, the subject of which will be What next, college, a job, or the draft? At this conference we expect to invite students from Masters, Drew, Storm King, Pleasantville and Riverdale. This will be the Hrst all-day conference Hackley has sponsored. Leif! GLEE CLUB, CHOIR AND OCTET ARELY has any extra-curricular organization at Hacl-:ley closed an active year in such auspicious style as did the Glee Club and Octet last June. Following a gala concert in Goodhue Hall on May 19, the Octet appeared by itself at the County Fair-six performances in allgand two successful auditions in Radio City for the Ted Iviack Amateur Hour on television. Losing all but nine of last year's members, the Glee Club quickly reorganized and furnished a full choir for the Christmas Vesper Service on Parents' Day last December. The Octet appeared in somewhat unpolished form at the Fall Athletic Banquet. However, by the time its scoutmaster-founder, Mr. Dexter, handed the new troop over to Mr. Gage, the three-year-old organization was a well- established part of school life. At the year's start so many new boys joined the troop that one patrol had to be added. The Eagle, Hawk, Savage and Vampire patrols have seven members each. Advancement was rattled oft in record time, and with this first achievement under their belts, the scouts turned their attention to their cabin in the woods. During the summer Lee Barnes, former assistant scoutmaster, had put in the floor. The scouts, by holding a carnival at the Riverdale foot- ball game, added S84 to the funds needed to tom- plete the cabin, At Christmas time, the troop held a drive to collect toys and Llothes for two needy Tarrytown families. The response was so overwhelming that the extra tlothes had to be sent to the Neighbor- hood House for other families. This yc-.ir there were more week-end trips than ever. Besides the numerous bitycle trips. Mr. Dexter .ind the patrol leaders drove to hX,llll.llllS- town. Massathusetts. to tamp on the Cold River beyond the Mohawk Trail. They climbed Monu- ment Mountain and Mount Greylock, the highest peak in Massachusetts. West Point Scout Day, with Army's slaughter of Citadel, took the troop up to West Point. After- wards, many of the scouts camped out at Bear Mountain Park, to bushwack up the mountain the next day. A day at the Statue of Liberty, followed by bowling in Dobbs Ferry, completed the before- Christmas activities. Vacation was just a breather in between activities, and with more enthusiasm than ever Troop 48 completed a whirlwind year of good deeds and good fun which it and the school can well be proud. When the group received their membership cards, they became eligible to wear the white and black sweater that distinguishes a Varsity H man from a letter winner. The boys in the club are deserving of this because of their outstanding sportsmanship as well as their prowess on the athletic field. The club elected Ed Wilson and Bob Mackenzie as this years president and vice-president. respec- tively. This year, as last year, the Varsity H Club Trophy will be awarded to the Lower Schooler showing the most outstanding athletic ability. leadership. and sportsmanship. The pur- pose of this award is to recognize tinc- athletes in the Lower School. 1 Q' M t i t7'ii-I I I FEW years ago the International Club was formed by Dr. Gratwick to create friend- ship and good feelings among foreign students at the school and the boys of this country. In order to do this, the members of the Club plan to carry out projects which affect the entire school. Besides the mostly social parties with movies and refreshments, on October 27 the Club spon- sored its second Halloween Dance. Long before the date of the dance was set, the Club decided to put the proceeds of the dance toward purchasing a television set which would be donated to the school. On that evening the dining room was dec- orated with autumn trimmings, streamers and balloons. More than 150 people attended, and the dance was a huge success. During the spring a trip was made to 'Hyde Park, the home of President Roosevelt. On May 16, the Club made another excursion to New York to see Phil Silvers Top- Banana. On April 14, the Club presented its yearly Pan- American Day program with boys from Spain, Greece, El Salvador, Cuba, and Brazil participat- ing. Besides the musical entertainment, the Club added to the school's flag collection by presenting to Mr. F. Miller flags from Mexico and Estonia. Mr. Cunha, together with his wife, deserves a great deal of credit for the success of the Club, and it is hoped that next year's activities will prove of interest and of help to the foreign and Ameri- can boys who will make up the roster of the Club. The Club this year was well represented by boys from Spain, Greece, Iran, El Salvador, Brazil, PuertoRico, England, Guatemala, Colombia, Li- beria, Mexico, and the United States. HACKLEY HE HACKLEY is the literary magazine of Hackley School. in which outstanding com- positions are published. This stimulates interest in the writing of themes by the student body of Hackley, for everyone is proud of having a literary composition of his printed in a magazine that is read by the entire community. Although many contributors felt that they had been severely hampered this year due to the fact that compositions had to be written in class under pressure, we believe that the quality of the themes has been extremely good. The duties of the Board consist first of choosing the best themes from literally hundreds of compo' sitions. After the Board has narrowed down the number of themes which it thinks worthy of pub- lication to about thirty literary efforts, it chooses half of these for publication in The Hackley. The themes which are published are then carefully scrutinized and the mistakes corrected. Following this the themes are typewritten, proofread, and sent away for publication. The editorial board of The Hrzchley includes the following: Mr. johnson, the faculty advisorg qp Q9 up 5 FED E1 I V r V l i l George Bishop, '52, Editor-in-Chic-fg and associate editors Sanford Weidenborner, '52g john McCar- roll, '53g William MacDowell, '54g and Clive Chajet, '55. The themes that appear in The Hachley come from both the Upper School and the Lower School. It is the wish of The Harleley to publish not only the efforts of the older boys but also those of the younger ones. The publication of an article in The Hachley is a great accomplishment for the boy who wrote itg for it means that from hundreds of themes his is one of few which is chosen. This is the just reward for a job well done. Lt if lu righl .Il I,1h.7t-Hauser. Chalet. lvfacDowell. Bishop fliclitorl. McCarroll. Weiden- borner. Sl.1udir1gfMr. john- son. As usual, the coverage and reporting in and around the school was very good. The Dial is the means by which student opinion is expressed and the news recorded. The paper is entirely free of faculty censorship, and it affords an excellent opportunity for future journalists to learn just how college newspapers are conducted. The Dial always strives to keep up the highest standards of Hackley School and to correct any abuses which come to its attention during the year. It can be said certainly that no other group in school entered into work with more spirit than the Dial board and reporters. Eddie Wilson was editor-in-chief and was ably assisted by Tony Waring, Charles Robinson, Ken- ney Sothern and Hans Boon, associate editors. The sports in school were covered by Phil Lubetkin and Martin Stearns. Al Kelly and Ned Cahn han- dled the advertising and the business end of the paper. ln charge of photography were George Bishop and Bob Koenigsberger. This year the Dial came out eight times and under Mr. Markriters guidance has attained its highest peak of efhciencyg however, the paper has yet to reach its apex and will, in the following years, continue to climb steadily until it does. In order to have a larger circulation, the Dial innovated the plan of offering a year's subscription for the reasonable price of one dollar. The re- sponse was very gratifying to the Dial board and will be continued in the following years. The members of this year's Dial urge that more boys become interested in the future publishing of the Dial as it is one of the most important Hackley activities. The members of the Dial board wish Al Kelly, next year's editor-in-chief. and his new board the best of luck for the coming year. THE CORRIDOR MONITORS CORRIDOR MONITOR holds probably the most responsible student job in the school. A good Monitor practically runs his corridor with a little help, if necessary, from the Corridor Master or House Master. His job starts in the morning with the inspec- tion of the rooms and ends at night with seeing that the last of his corridor is safely in bed with lights out. Innumerable odd jobs are put on his shoulders, such as policing the Tuck Shop, going around with the master inspecting rooms on Saturday E of xf I, 5 6't ap1ma...'f .fx c morning, fire alarm duties, etc. Other jobs may be added from time to time. He has to know well every boy on his corridor, be sympathetic but strict in carrying out his duties, show no favoritism even to his closest friends. This is not easy, particularly for the Senior Cor- ridor Monitors who are disciplining their own classmates. He must uphold the school rules and do all in his power to enforce them. If he thinks a rule is not a good one, he should go to the House Master or to the Regent of Dormitories and talk it over with him. Maybe he is right in his opinion, and the rule can be changed. The monitors are carefully selected from names handed in by students who want the job. This year the Monitors are: Senior Corridor-R. Lovely, Morrison junior Corridor-G. Bishop, R. Koenigsberger Sophomore Corridor-R. MacKenzie, H. Me- hathe Freshman Corridor-D. Sanborn, D. Webster Being a good Monitor throughout the year is a strong addition to a boy's recommendation to ' - college. It is something well worth working for. Aki JI -.. X 5 Yl- gfp-1 -.f-. LTHOUGH students had assisted in the li- brary for several years, it was not until 1947 that a committee of faculty and students was ap- pointed to assist in the administration of the Gage Memorial Library. Since that time the committee, without much publicity, has provided invaluable assistance to the librarian and the school. The Library Committee is resuonsible for the general policies of the library, the rules and regu- lations under which it operates, and, when neces- sary, the enforcement of these rules. Much of the committees time is taken in recovering books and. magazines taken from the library, and in discuss- ing ways to stop this loss. LIBRARY COMMITTEE This year the committee has provided library assistants for periods when the librarian is not on duty. Special recognition should be given to Way'ne Shirley, Peter Deautsch, john Morrison, and Stephen Miller. who have been in charge of the library one evening .1 week, and to Stephen Miller. also, for helping during the Lower School study period in the afternoon. Each year, the committee, in addition, presents a school assembly during children's book week. The committee also sponsors a book fair in No- vember, the proceeds of which go to buy new books. Until this year, the Library Committee has met only when necessary, and has functioned without any written rules or regulations. In response to several suggestions, the librarian appointed john McCarroll and Stephen Miller to draw up a set of by-laws, which, when approved by the committee, should help future Library Committees give better service to the school. john Hauser is the student chairman. ATHLETIC BOARD OF CONTROL HE athletic program at Hackley is under the guidance of a faculty-student committee called the Athletic Board of Control. This board is the result of the headmasters request for a joint stu- dent and faculty group to discuss the problems and standards of athletics at Hackley. Predominant in the Board's mind is the main- tenance of high standards of sportsmanship and the provision of proper athletic equipment and wholesome facilities for playing and dressing. The Board functions as a committee to set the general athletic policy of the school. lt serves as a guide for coaches on training regulations. lt formulates the general standards an athlete must meet to qualify for a letter. All athletic letter awards and appointments of managers for varsity teams are subject to the ap- proval of the Board. This year the Board has voted to standardize the Hackley varsity letter. All sports are to have the same insignia. It is an eight-inch gray letter, trimmed with black and placed on a gray felt background. Provision has been made for special insignia for captains' and managers' letters. Modi- fied letters are to be awarded to members of other teams, including the Lower School teams. X, at f The Boards members include the headmaster, athletic director, coaches of all varsity sports, other coaches of the current season, and the captains of all varsity sports. The Lower School is represented by its senior master and one other coach. Meetings are held approximately twice a term. The Board is informed of the nature of the ath- letic budget and aids the athletic director in sug- gesting general expenditures. With a board such as this, representing the faculty. administration and student body, the ath- letic program at Hackley will always be guided toward the highest ideals of sportsmanship. There had been a feeling expressed by many parents, faculty members, and students that such a society was a necessary and strongly desired activity. Due to the promotion by Mr. MacArthur and Mrs. Mitchell, the society was at last formed. On the first occasion that it func- tioned as a society, in a school assembly, the pro- gram presented was received with strong enthusi- asm throughout the school. The topic for the debate was, Resolved: the United States should adopt Socialized Medicine. The allirmative side was taken by Ruppert Lovely and john McCarroll1 the negative by Martin Stearns and Buzz Robinson. Both sides presented well-prepared speeches, and the general interest expressed by the student body showd that the club was ol? to a good start. A debate was arranged with Riverdale, marking the tirst scholastic contest with Hackleys traditional rival. The topic was Resolved: Legalized eutha- nasia should be adopted in the United States. Riverdale had the atiirmative, Hacltley the nega- tive. Those representing Hatkley were Martin Stearns, Sanford Weidenborner, and Buzz Robin- son. At the time of the writing of this article, an attempt had been made to secure a debate with Trinity, and it seemed as though there would be one. The society had a good first year, and with the benefit of our mistakes and a better chance for competitive selections to the club, next year's so- ciety will have even higher standards, and more respect and prestige within the school.
