We have gathered here not only to have a lot of fun but also to pay respect to our fellow students who are out there at this time, giving their all so that our class night and other following class nights can be accomplished. Somewhere out there, maybe in a fox hole or on a battleship, our fellow classmates are talking about this night, how they wish that they could be here to close up four years of heartbreak and fun. I can just hear one of them now, reminiscing to his buddies- You know, fellows, I don't think I will ever forgettmy high school days. Boy! I wish I were there now. I can still see myself, one independent person among ninety-four. It didn't take us long to realize, though, that we needed some sort of guid- ance for our wabbly group so, in our first meeting, we elected the following oilicers for leadership: President ................ ................,......,..................... . Alfred Nunn Vice-President ....... .................. h Ieri Hall Secretary .....,....... ............ lN Iildred Beam Treasurer ....,... ....... V incent Reidinger Class Colors ............................,......................, Blue and Silver Class Flower .............................,................................ Gardenia Class Nlotlo ........ The higher we rise, the broader the view Then there was the first time we got together for a bit of fun. It was the night of our skating party. Gosh! It was especially funny when one of the teach- ers sprawled out across the floor. WVe didn't really do much our Freshman Year but we did our best to get into the swing with the upper classes and try to be one of them. We all seemed quite glad to start the summer vacation but we were also glad to get back and start our second year. At our election of class officers, it appeareed that we were so well pleased with Al Nunn as President and Vinc Reidinger as Treasurer that we left them as they were, but elected Emma jane Smith as Vice-President and Albert Michell as Secretary. This year was brightened up by our responsibility of the Memorial Day program. This was one of our first responsibilities and we all did our best to live up to it. We chose the Fourteenth Veteran as our play and had a cast consisting of Gloria Ronca, jerry Cannon, Mildred Beam, Harry Pool, Joe Smith, and Alfred Nunn. Under the leadership of Miss VVilliams, we felt we had at last done something successful for our school. The rest of the year was filled with studies and general fun but we were anxious to start the last half of the climb, as this we imagined would be the most interesting part, judging from stories overheard from the upper classmen. The third year started with a bang and we once more proceeded with elec- tion. X'Ve were pleased the first year and so well pleased the second year with Al Nunn as President that we gave him the job once more. Our financier, Vinc Reidinger, took a patriotic step and joined the Nevy so we elected joe Smith in his place. Joe didn't mind being second choice because he was proud to take over a job that had been so well done before. We then elected john Groome as Vice-President and Peggy Coleman as Secretary. Once more our ability as actors was tested and we presented a play at Christ- mas time. This time we had Mrs. Hale as director and we produced a play called, Mimi Lights the Candle and had a C2iSt of Christine Vey, Billie Palmer, Lois Voorhees, Vivian Resch, Doris Shaneberger, Elizabeth Riley, Alfred Nunn, janie Smith and Mildred Beam. Fifty-four - f 'C ale . T H E in E 'D'8T.T ' At last came one of the things we had been looking forward to for quite a while-our junior Prom. I'll never forget that day: most of the girls were absent from school and spending their time at the Beauty Parlor instead. N'Ve surely did get decked out that nightg sotne of the fellows even went so lar as to wear tails. Our decorations of yellow and green proved to be quite a success. You know, you could even see the surprised look on the Seniors' laces when they realized that we juniors had outdone them as decorators. Ol course, Mr. Voor- hees, was the supervisor and we admit that much of the success was due to his efforts. XVe were still walking around with our heads in the air when Commence- ment week rolled around. The Seniors couldn't do without us so chose four of our junior members for ushers. They were Emma jane Smith, Ethel Campbell, Al Michell and Kenny VVillson. Wie took all the slams they dished out and could have taken more if they were smart enough to think ol' some. Christine Vey was presented wifh the Key of Knowledge by Wayne Sherrer for having attained the highest average-and so another year was over. VVe were quite dillerent people when we started our Senior year. There sure was a difference between that year and the time our knees were knocking as we walked into our Freshman homeroom. Xve were the best strutting Seniors ever. XVe were the best and nobody could tell us any different. Having seen for three years that Alfred Nunn was capable of his oflice as President, we again elected him for a fourth term. Al Michell as Vice-President, Peggy Coleman again was elected Secretary and Kenny Mlillson took over joe Smith's place as Treasurer. joe lelt us to join the Navy. Lacking in experience but not in heartg Linder the leadership of two splendid co-captains, john Groome. Kenny XVillson and through the excellent sports- manship and cooperation ol' Bill Burke and Fred Adams and with the great end play of Earl Philhower and Al Michell, and splendid guidance of Coach Morrison, Hackettstown closed out the I9-14 football season, l't0t in a blazing glory as in previous years but in glory that can only be gotten in team work, heartbreak, and fun. Our Senior year really flew by. On March 22 and 23 we presented our Senior Play Lavender and Old Lace. Our class possessed such excellent talent that the performance just had to be held on two nights with diflerent casts. The following took part: Christine Vey, Edith Price, Carolyn Pahner, Doris Shane- berger, Etmna jane Smith, Beatrice Anderson, Marjorie Lake, Albert Michell, l.ois Rossy, Mildred Beam, Frederick Adams, Alfred Nunn, Lois Voorhees, Geraldine Hart, john Groome, YVilliam Burke and Harry Pool. Our class again led the way in something new. lt was the lirst time anything like this had been attempted. Under the excellent direction ol Mrs. Hale, the Class ol' I9-15 again went over the top. On April 25 we were entertained by the junior Class at their Prom. Wfe know the junior Class tried their hardest and we appreciated their ellorts but they have a lot to learn if you will pardon our saying so. The first week ol' june our Or:tcles came Olll. Never before at H. H. S. has such a yearbook been produced. Bigger than other years, it contained service- men's pictures. Every boy or girl who attended Hackettstown School, now serv- ing his country was paid this tribute. Earlier in the year we had elected janie Smith as Editor-in-Chief, Mildred Beam, Ethel Campbell, Peggy Coleman, Geraldine Hart, and Gloria Ronca as Assistant Editors, Allred Nunn as Business Manager, his assistants: james Allen, john Groome, Al Michell, Edith Price, Lois, Rossy, and Christine Vey. Artists: Lyal Stevens and Lois Voorhees. Our year book would never have been possible without the sacrifice and hard work ol' Miss jolmson. To Miss johnson goes our heart-felt thanks. Christine Vey came out the highest average of four years ol work, with janie Smith a close second, and Geraldine Hart coming out third. So there is it. ln a lew days we shall all be graduated. I know the Class of I9-15 will be sure to make a name for itself in the world. Fifty-five Class Prophecy by ALBERT Mitzi-lr:1.1. The Class of l945, as you know, has done many outstanding things in the past, but now let us look into the future. Since this class was so outstanding, we couldn't just let things fade away after our graduation, so, as usual, we have come out with a super-duper idea. That is, to have a class reunion fifteen years after our graduation. For this reunion we wanted to do something extra- ordinary. lt is planned and prepared for, so with a skip and a jump, let us imagine we are in the year 1960. You are now about to witness the greatest and strangest expedition ever tried by man. For this reunion the Class of '45 has worked hard and prepared long. A trip to Mars is no easy thing. VVe had to do a great deal of clerical work to make this possible, but Earl Philhower, Elizabeth Riley, Vivian Resch, Gloria Ronca, and Geraldine Hart handled that angle for us. Our biggest problem was a way to get there, but our engineers and mechanics, Fred Adams, Don Burd, and Joe Smith, along with the handy man of our Class, came to our rescue there by building this great rocket plane which you see before you. This plane is equipped with many modern conveniences, such as radios, electric lights and soft leather chairs. You can thank Jitn Allen for the leather. Being unusually healthy and possessed with large appetites, our house- wives will take over the kitchens and feed us en route. They are: Edith Price- who can't argue with her husband because he's a lawyer, Lois Rossy-who is through saving penniesg she's trying Knechels nowg Stefli Smalinski and Jeri Hall-who have traveled from the Halls of Montezuma to the Shores of Tripoli , Grace Smith-who is wolftng it: Doris Steinmann-who still has Georgia on her 1nind g Beatrice Anderson-who still loves music or should we say musicians: Mildred Beam-who is still trying to decide whether or not to Beyerself that new dress or not: Ethel Campbell-who claims she can drive further with Willson-golf ballsg Betty Cannon-who claims she can raise any- thing on the muckland, even childreng and last of our housewives is Elaine Gallagher-who married Bob so she could have police protection. You're probably wondering how we transported all these things here. XfVe1l, Lyal Stevens took care of that with his Greyvans. In case anyone gets air sick we have some swell Florence Nightingales aboard. They are Doris Shane- berger, Grace Smith and Lois Voorhees. YfVe have great quantities of food supplies in the rocket, we even have fish for Fridays, some of which Harry Pool caught for us, but it's funny, Sandra Cudney got a lot more than Harry did. Next on our program is the christening. Since Alfred Nunn was our Class President, we thought it was only proper that he christen it. He has smashed the bottle and ship is christened. All aboard, and we are on our merry way. We are now floating through space. For entertainment we have an orchestra and a spacious dance floor. Let's take a look at the orchestra. I knew it, there's Killer Nunn still beating those drums. Yes, that sounds like Harry James, but it's not, it's Roland Phoebus! Evelyn Seley is really going to town on that slide trombone. YVhere's that hilarious laugh coming from? You might know, it's Dick Young, still trying to laugh and play at the same time. lt looks like Johnnie Groome has finally learned how to play the cymbals without bending them. There's Marjorie Lake, and the king of the Keyboards, Bill Burke, sitting at the piano. An orchestra wouldn't be complete without vocalists, and you all remember those lovely voices of Christine Vey, Janie Smith, Jean Blau, and Billie Palmer. They're here to fill the vacancy. X'Vhat's all the yelling and screaming about? Milly, it looks like we have arrived at our destination. Yes, sir! Fasten your safety belts and hold your breath, we are landing! VVhy, there are the special envoys we sent ahead to make reservations for us here. Bert Tierney, Ken Mlillson, Fred Harmon, Peg Coleman, Henrietta Tynan, Verne Euart, Inez Hedden, Florence Jamison, Barbara Liggett, Betty Losey, yep, theylre all here. And there's Gerry Cannon to cover this expedition for his newspaper syndicate. Gerry's the XValter Winchell for several leading papers, you know. Yes, we've done it again. You have witnessed another successful under- taking of the Class of 1945. By their past and this much of their future record, you can judge the outcome of anything this wonderful Senior Class undertakes. E Foofball In the first night game played on lNIorrison Field, the I9-15 Hackettstown High School football teatn opened the season Saturday night, September 22nd, with Belvidere High School. It was the first game between the two schools in twenty years. A capacity crowd saw Hackettstown win the opener by the score of 27 to 0. The following week, again under the lights, Saturday, September 29th, the Hackettstown team was outclassed by the Colonials of Morristown High School, losing by the score of 31 to ti. The Hackettstown team lacked the spark and de- fensive which served them well in the past against teams above their class. Missing two scoring opportunities in fumbles, Hackettstown yielded a 2 to 0 victory to Bernardsville High School in drenching rain Saturday afternoon, October 6th, on the mudd surface of the Somerset Field. A safetv in the first . 4 . . . Q . 1 1 . period proved to be the winning margin for Iiernardsvtlle, who failed to invade the Hackettstown territor dee Jer than the fort f- ard stri J in their offensive ilav. Y l I , Hackettstown and Hlharton High Schools battled to a T to 7 tie, under the lights Saturday night October lfith, before a large following of grid fans. Travelling to Flemington Friday afternoon, October l9th, the Hackettstown High School team with a surge of scoring power in the third quarter, defeated the local high school 25 to H. The scoring spree netted the Orange and Black 18 points after the score was tied up at the half 7 to 7. Predictions of a lopsided game and run-away score for the undefeated X'Vash- ington High School team were upset on the Xflashington gridiron Saturday after- noon, October 27th, when the Hackettstown Tigers held the heavy Blue Streaks to two touchdowns gained late in the contest on a blocked kick and a fumble. YVashington converted one of the extra points to make the tally I3 to 0 for their narrowest victory of the 1945 undefeated season. Hackettstown's rigid defense kept the game on even terms throughout the first half and then continued their high standard of play until the closing whistle, giving full value to a crowd of more than 2000 spectators on a perfect autumn afternoon. Finding themselves in the XVashington game, Hackettstown then continued to win. The next opponent, Dover High School, was crushed by a to 0 score on Morrison Field, Saturday afternoon, November Srd. Newton High School next was defeated at Newton, Saturday afternoon, November l0tl1, 25 to 6. Spectacular runs to pay dirt gave the Hackettstown teatn the advantage but not without more of a battle than the one-sided score indicates. Driving to victory on the rain-soaked turf of lNforrison Field, the Hacketts- town High School Tigers rang down the curtain on their 1945 season Thanks- giving Day morning with a I3 to 0 shut-out over the Roxbury High School Gaels before a throng of Turkey Day spectators for the 23rd annual meeting of the schools.
