While through toils and tribulations We have gained success. We've had such fun throughout these days, We really can't forget them. To classmates, teachers, friends and all, we bid goodbye. Dear H. H. S. we love you, And the years spent here have been such fun. The friends that we've made are so many, And the knowledge so great that we've won- How we hate to leave our High School, With the friendships true that we have shared. Oh! we'll cherish Ithese days in our mem'ries, And we'll always hold them dear. We will make our pathways brighter By our knowledge gained here at school. We will think of the friends we have made here- Friends we love, friends we trust, friends we share. Now, the time has come for parting. On our different roads traveling afar, Years gone by we look back and sigh, Oh, dear H. H. S. goodbye! JESSIE BUNTAIN LINDA HERBERT JOSEPH STEWART WILLIAM THORP MARGUERITE TRIMMER MARY VREELAND Twenty ji THE 1 I -, ORRCLE Class Poem A FRIEND TO ALL Dear H. H. S,, you are a friend: You show us wrong from right: i Our courses you have helped to wend In reaching firmer light, Oh, H. H. Sl Oh, H, H. SJ Our spirits you attend: And thus we have admired you so From start to very end. Oh, H. H. S.l we once were new, You molded us thy way: But praises now we give to you, Your trust we'll ne'er betray! Our H. H. SX Our H. H. S.! We've made this motto, true: Always lead and never follow, And we will keep it, too! Witluin the four short years just passed We've weathered every feat, Thy worth we've realized at last, Our hearts in praise now beat. But H. H. S.! Oh, H. H. S.I Before your doors we've massed To bid you now a sad farewell, For time is moving fast! We'll meet our future face to face, Then peer in every part Until we find the rightful place, ln which to make our start. Oh, H. H, Sl Oh, H. H. Sf We've kept a steady pace: Through life we will refer to you, For knowledge is our base. Now teachers dear, and classmates, too, Friendship we comprehend: A friend helps in what e'er you do, And you have been that friend. Dear H. H. S., Dear H. H. June 20, 1941, was another enjoyable affair. Three hundred and thirty-four members gathered together to meet their old classmates and enjoy another banquet and dance. These banquets recall many pleasant memories and the Alumni certainly welcomes you. Our guests were Supervising Principal Van Cleve Brugler, and the Graduating Class of 1941. , The banquet was held in the Presbyterian Chapel and the dinner was served by the Pastor's Aid. The guest table was decorated with baskets of beautiful flowers. gifts of Roehrich and Morgans, florists. The other tables were also decorated with beautiful flowers, many thanks to the Class of 1931. MENU FRUIT CUP CELERY PICKELS OLIVES ROAST TURKEY with DRESSING FISH CRANBERRY SAUCE MASHED POTATOES PEAS CABBAGE RELISH TOMATO SALAD ROLLS CHOCOLATE SUNDAE COFFEE CAKE MINTS Following the dinner Kenneth Linaberry, Class of 1931, acted as toastmaster in a very pleasing manner. The toastmaster introduced the President of the Association, Mr. Harold Nunn, Class of 1904, who gave the address of welcome. After welcoming the members and Mr, Bruglet. Mr. Nunn stated that from the founding of the High School in 1882 up to and including the Class of 1941 there had been graduated a total of 1608 young men and women from the local high school, ln addressing the Class of 1941 he said in part. To the Class of 1941 - we Welcome you into this organization. Many of you are going out into a troubled world. You will need lots of courage, but we believe that you are prepared. We wish you success in what- ever you may undertake - and happiness always. Miss Roberta Bowers, president of the Class of 1941, then gave the response for her class. The toastmaster then called on Mr. Brugler, the supervising principal, who gave a very interesting speech. Seventy-six 4, -Q .mls THE ORRCLE 1 ,I The next place on the program has been given over to Mr. Frank Souders, High School Principal, ever since the Alumni Association was founded twenty-nine years ago, Due to a long serious illness Mr. Souders was unable to attend: it being the first Alumni banquet that he has missed. Mr. Nunn suggested that the entire group sign individually a Message of Good Cheer, and that it be sent to Mr. Souders. A very fine message was sent to Mr. Souders and with it went the signatures of every one present. Harry Neighbor, Class of 1907, then played a piano solo, which was followed by a toast from Robert Bennett, Class of 1936: then a toast by Clyde Apgar, Class of 1931. This was followed by group singing. Each year the class having the largest attendance percentage present receives the Alumni Silver Loving Cup. This year the Class of 1891 won the cup which was presented by Kenneth Linaberry, the toastmaster for the evening. Brantford Benton then gave a toast for the Class of 1926, and this was followed by a trumpet solo by Janet Buntain, Class of 1938, which was very well received by the group. Mrs. Thomas LaBar then responded with a toast for the Class of 1921. Then followed group singing. Lillian Saunders Curl responded with a toast for the Class of 1916. This was followed by a musical novelty by Harry Neighbor and Harold Nunn. Mrs. John Sharp responded with a toast for the Class of 1891, which was celebrating its fiftieth anniversary and had three members present - Mrs. Wm. B. Rice, Robert K. Teel and Mrs. John Sharp. An interesting feature was that six members of the Graduating Class of 1941 had a parent present that was also a graduate of H. H. S. as follows: Roberta Bowers-Dorothea Taylor Bowers, Class of 1913 Ann Everitt-Paul Everitt. Class of 1904 Robert Morgan-Dorothy Windfelt Morgan, Class of 1913 Blanchard Perry-Mildred Mayberry Perry, Class of 1910 Shirley Osmun-Harold Osmun, Class of 1916 Arthur L. Straub-May Johnson Straub, Class of 1914 All received a very hearty applause, The Banquet was concluded by all singing the Alma Mater, after which the members and their guests assembled in the High School Gymnasium which had been beautifully decorated bv the Class of 1936. Hale lmlay and his Orchestra furnished the usual snappy dance music and was enjoyed by all. Time passes quickly at the banquet and dance for old friends and classmates. Come back each year and greet your friends. The Alumni welcomes you and the latch string will always be on the outside. BERT!-IA G. This is a natural result of all the talk, printed matter, and moving pictures of and about airplanes. War conditions throughout the World have made human beings of all ages airplane conscious, and the request for the club is the result. The activities of this club will not provide complete preparation for a vocation in the airplane industry, but it provides possibilities for directing skills, talents, artistic tastes, and inclinations to activity. NVhen a boy has Com- pleted a model of one of the Well-known bomber or fighter planes in use today, he will have much better knowledge and appreciation of the planes he sees flying overhead. The club meets period eight in the Industrial Arts shop under the guidance and sponsorship of Mr. John N. Balmoos. Mr. Balmoos spent a year repairing and reconditioning the old French crates in use back of the lines doing training service, after they were no longer in fighting condition, in the first World War. With an average weight of one hundred and forty-live pounds and 11 squad of some thirty odd boys, the 1941 team was the lightest and smallest to represent the high school in the past fourteen years. Opening the season with Carteret High School at eight o'clock Saturday evening, September 27, the Hackettstown team ploughed gamely thru their bigger and heavier opponents, only to fumble at crucial moments and lose by the score of 28 to 0. Somerville High School, with a defeat against them, came to Hackettstown the following Saturday and pulled a surprise attack to win 20 to 6. Engaging a team with as much acute manpower shortage as its own, the Hackettstown team defeated Boonton High School, 13 to 7, Saturday, October 11. A missed placement try for the extra point cost Hackettstown High its game with Franklin High at Franklin, Saturday, October 18. Franklin's score was set up by a had Hackettstown kick which went out of bounds on Hackettstown's twenty-two yard line. The score came several plays later on a pass from Christian to Piniaha. Christian place-kicked the win- ning point. Hackettstown's score culminated a seventy-six yard advance that started in the third period, driving to the sixteen-yard line where French took the ball on a reverse and ran to score. Injury-ridden, bottled up in its own territory, and limited to two first downs, the Hackettstown team found its offensive punch in the closing minutes of the game to defeat the Washington High School team, 7 to 6. Trailing 6 to 0, as a result of a Washington score in the third period and three minutes of play left in tlhe game, a punt by Tynan of Hackettstown put the ball out of bounds on Washington's four-yard line. Flynn, Washington quarterback, went back into his end Zone to kick the ball out of danger. Tynan, spotting an opening, dashed thru blocking the punt which fell in pay territory, where Batson fell on it for a touchdown, tying the score. On the try for the extra point, DeRemer tossed a perfect pass to Wilson, who took it over the line for the tally and Hackettstown won, 7 to 6, in a story book finish. Forced back to its own goal posts by expert booting by the visiting eleven, Hackettstown gave up the Hrst touchdown in the second period. Hackettstown put on two gallant goalline stands in the fourth period but was forced to give up to superior force when Tynan had to drop on the ball behind his goal line for a safety. Dover then began a march from their own thirty-five and scored their second touchdown. The Wilson High School eleven battled the Hackettstown team to a 6 to 6 tie on the Wilson field, Saturday, November 8. A 55-yard march gave Wilson a touchdown in the first period, and a 65-yard march in the third period chalked up a similar score for Hackettstown. The Wilson's team place- ment for the extra point was blocked while an attempted pass by Hackettstown was smothered. The Hackettstown eleven pulled one out of the fire Saturday, November 15, at Newton when they scored touchdowns in the third and fourth periods after trailing by six points at halftime, to defeat Newton High School, 12 to 6. Brilliant running by the half backs of the Roxbury High School football team, gave them a 13 to 0 victory over Hackettstown, Thanksgiving morning, November 20. Both of their touchdowns came in the second period on long runs, one for 69 yards around right end and the other for 52 yards from an off tackle play. Hackettstown staged its threat ,early in the first period, when it drove to the Roxbury 5-yard line, where the ball was lost on downs, when a forward pass over the goal line was completed outside the end zone. Despite their defeat, Hackettstown had the advantage in first downs, making ten to live for the visitors. At the annual banquet, tendered the squad by the Board of Education, Richard Batson and Arthur Blake were elected co-captains for the 1942 team and Norton Willson was elected manager.
