What lies ahead We cannot see. What joys and cares We face: The knowledge we've obtained from thee Shall always find a place. No other school in all the land Can measure up to you, For all of us, you understand And lend your patience, too. We've worked so hard for our success But working has been fun, For all these days at H. H. S. Has passed by us as one. The parting of our Ways are here, Dear teachers, classmates true, The future we shall never fear When e'er we think of you. And now at last our school days end Too soon for most of us For now in life we just begin, To leave in God our trust. HOWARD NIPER Twenly-one V ' -if' ' ' C4 M' W M W ' ll W l of fu U pf! ll A . AX we Qmflacce Annual Banquef and Dance Alumni Associafion lhe twenty-seventh annual banquet and dance of the Hackettstown High School Alumni Association on Friday evening June 23, 1939 was a very enjoyable affair. Two hundred and eighty members came back to the old town of their childhood days to meet their old schoolmates and enjoy the banquet and dance. These banquets recall many pleasant memories and the Alumni look forward to having you with us again. Our guests were Supervising Principal Van Cleve Brugler, Principal Frank A. Souders and the graduating class of 1939. The banquet was held in the Presbyterian Chapel and the elegant dinner was served by the Pastors Aid, The guest table extending through the center of the dining hall was decorated with baskets of beautiful flowers, gifts of Roehrich and Morgans, florists. The other tables were also decorated with beautiful flowers-many thanks to the class of 1929. The red, white and blue kept the feeling of de- mocracy and patriotism in our minds throughout the evening. Along the walls were silhouettes of those two esteemed political leaders of our country-George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. We could imagine that those two were looking in at our dance and feeling proud that we are able to enjoy the privileges of a free country. As usual, the Grand March was led by the Junior Class President, Leonard Fiedler and Miss Eileen Heater. The music of Ken Brader's Saracens enabled the girls and boys, who, by the way, looked as if they had just arrived from Hollywood, to make the Junior Prom of the year 1939 one to be long remembered. The patrons and patronesses were: Mr. and Mrs. Edward W. Kilpatrick, Mr. and Mrs. William H. Rice, Mr. and Mrs. Van Cleve Brugler, Mr Frank A. Souders, Miss Emily Johnson, Miss Louise A. On that day our athletic field was officially dedicated and named MORRISON FIELD in appreciation of the eleven years of efficient service rendered by Mr. Charles A. Morrison as a member of our Faculty and director of athletics. Mr. Edward W. Kilpatrick, President of our Board of Education, was in charge of the ceremonies befitting the occasion. Souders, High School Principal Mr. Kilpatrick then presented Coach Morrison with a silver plaque. In pre- senting the plaque, Mr. Kilpatrick reviewed the record of the football teams coached by Mr. Morrison. Mr. Edward Y. Williams presented Mr. Morrison with a beautiful bouquet of flowers as a token of esteem from the community. A large orange and black pennant was raised on the flag pole beneath the Stars and Stripes. The pennant was lettered, MORRISON FIELD. Prominent officials of the State, County and town were guests of the Board of Education. Members of the Boards of Education of all the schools met in football were also in attendance. The Members of the Board of Education, Faculty, student body and towns- people are proud to have as a member of our Faculty a man who by his own efforts has been able to bring about such an achievement. Morrison. The team was awarded the undisputed Group 2 North Jersey Champion- ship by the New Jersey lnterscholastic Athletic Association, Joseph Stanowicz was selected as a member of the New Jersey All-State Football Team, holding a coveted backfield position, Stanowicz also led the individual scoring of all preparatory and high schools in the entire state, with 160 points. Preceding the annual Thanksgiving Day football game, the Board of Edu- cation of Hackettstown highly honored Coach Charles A. Morrison by dedicat- ing to him the athletic field hereafter to be known as MORRISON FIELD. Mr. Morrison assumed his present responsibilities eleven years ago, Septem- ber l929. Since that time, the football teams under his direction have played 99 games, four were tied, seven were lost and 88 were won. l-lackettstown's points total 2312, the opposition, 344. Obviously that record called for commemoration and the Board of Educa- tion found a likely medium. The occasion was the dedication of the athletic field. When the name banner was run up on the field's Hag pole, it read MOR- RlSO'N ElELD, a title which will littingly perpetuate the esteem of the Hackettstown community for a sterling sportsman and a builder of line athletes and outstanding teams. At the annual banquet tendered the team by the Board of Education. David Johnson and Carl Urevich were elected co-captains of the l94O team. James Mooney and Gilbert Smith were elected managers. One of the best Hackettstown High School football teams of all time, ended a season of interrupted success by defeating ten teams to amass a string of thirty victories. Opening the season with Phillipsburg High School on September 15th, in a night game at Phillipsburg, the Hackettstown High School football team evincing little regard for the pre-season evaluation of the Phillipsburg team. proceeded to hand the Garnet a decisive setback. A gathering of ten thousand spectators cheered long and lustily as the Orange and Black clad warriors ran roughshod over the hapless Phillipsburg eleven, who were unquestionably outclassed in every phase of the game. The Hackettstown team showed a wealth of back-Held strength with Joie Stanowicz garnering the hero's laurels from the aggressive standpoint. Journeying to Carteret, New Jersey, on Saturday, September 30th, to meet the high school of that place, the Hackettstown eleven encountered opposi- tion of the sternest sort and were hard pressed to win, l3 to O. Hampered by hot and sultry weather their margin of victory can be attributed to the fact that they played smarter football, and, even if they were guilty of fumbling, they handled the ball with much more Hnesse than did the losers. Appearing on their home Held Saturday, October 7th, for the first time in the 1939 season, the Hackettstown team continued its winning ways by over- whelming Somerville High School, 28 to 6, in a flashy display of real gridiron power. Entertaining Boonton High School on Saturday, October l4th, Hacketts- town High, considerably superior in virtually every respect, marched up and down the field for touchdowns in every period to inflict a 42 to O defeat to the visitors. Travelling to Ogdensburg, New Jersey, on Saturday, October Zlst., to encounter Franklin High School, the Hackettstown team was unparalleled as they smothered the home team, 28 to 7. Hackettstown High prevailed at Bangor, Pennsylvania in the following game as they soundly spanked a belligerent Bangor High School team with a 33 to 0 victory. The contentious attitude of the Bangor team and its supporters was unwarranted. Before a large gathering, the Hackettstown team scintillated as they unleash- ed a potent second period offensive to achieve the objective, a 14 to O victory over Dover High School. The ease with which the winners handled their most feared rival was a convincing testimonial to the excellence of the Hackettstown team. One hundred thirty-one y . 6 if vlan in X .1 f Hr SFX gr, as gn Q ... 14, 6 f ti-X me Qnecbe v'L The Netcong High School team was untenable before the aggression of the Hackettstown eleven, playing without their captain, they ran amuck to score in every period and win 41 to O. Continuing in their ascendancy, Hackettstown completely annihilated the contingent representing Newton High School, winning by the score of 38 to 6. Culminating a season Hlled with thrills, Hackettstown High celebrated Thanksgiving Day by defeating its traditional rival, Roxbury High, on the newly dedicated Morrison Field, by the score of 47 to 12, giving the Orange and Black an undefeated season of ten games and also an undefeated string of thirty games, dating way back into l936. Hackettstown High's l939 edition also scored more points than any other team to represent the school, namely 3 l 6 to 38 for their opponents. Captain Joseph Stanowicz was the outstanding individual of the Hacketts- town eleven. Following closely was the team's Number One lnterferer, Lynn Whelan, whose murderous blocking was a feature of every game. John Szawaluk and Morris Levitt, whose names appear on the silver foot- ball for A'Sportsmanship, Teamwork and Training, were all that the three words imply, plus some fine running and blocking by Szawaluk. Walter Petty, who held the diflicult position of varsity center for three years, was a controversialist and a competitor of the highest rank. Roberty Gray, whose generalship was exemplary, Charles Robinson of the long strides and fleetfootedrness, Fred Tishuk, David Johnson, Carl Urevich, Thomas Whelan, Lloyd Best, Bruce Stout, Marcus Smith, Ralph Batson, Royal Lancaster, Clark Mayberry, Steven Heryla, John DeRemer and Frank Walsh playing their respective positions with commendableness, were all contributory to the team's success. The second Jayvee win was made at home against the Dover Jayvees. The Jayvees after receiving the kick-off marched to their Hrst touchdown without relinquishing the ball. The final score was 14 to O. The third game of the season was played at Gladstone against the St. Ber- nards' Varsity. The Jayvees made two touchdowns before the St. Bernards' team had possession of the ball. The strong St. Bernards' offense then clicked until the last two minutes of the game. With the score 19 to 12 against them. the Jayvees put on a touchdown march but failed to make the extra point. Ai me Qnocte Baseball Duplicating the 1937 and 1938 seasons with five victories and five defeats, the 1939 Hackettstown High School baseball club can take their place with other great teams of the past. Not given much of a chance at the beginning of the season and then finishing as they did deserves high praise to the fighting team and to their coach, Mr. Morrison, who seems to always have a trick or two up his sleeve in keeping a good Hackettstown team on top and a mediocre team fighting for an even break. Opening their season with Dover High School, at Dover, Hackettstown lost to a superior team 7 to 2. Following this defeat, Hackettstown made it two in a row by losing to Boonton, 8 to 4, Franklin and Newton High Schools. were next defeated by 3 to 0 and 6 to 4. A well played game with Boonton High School was next lost by the close score of 2 to 3. Hackettstown scoring 2 runs with 2 hits while Boonton garnered 3 hits for 3 runs. Butler High School next handed Hackettstown a shut-out game 0 to 7. Getting back into the victory column, Hackettstown defeated Franklin High School at Franklin, 8 to 2, and followed with the most important win of the season, that over Dover High School, with the score, 4-l. St. Bernards' School next bowed to Hackettstown, 7-3. With surprises predominate thruout the season, the Hackettstown team continued to pull the unexpected right down to the last game by losing it to the Newton High School team 6 to 7, whose victory over Hackettstown was the only one for their entire season.
