Wlicm with a watchful, eager eye doth see And guide victoriously in time of strife: And Board of llducation, praIse we bring 'lio you, our tree's trunlft, whos shown us proof: i'Vw'ec.1ii ring 'lihe bells of the future with the ropes of the past. Our helpful teachers nt-'er will we forget, Who lilse the branches of .1 tree. convey 'l'o us, the ones who now express regret, iliheir knowledge, inspiration, .intl the way To be successful here, thus pronii' ing lior us A richer, fuller lilei When we ring 'l'he bells of the future with the ropes of the past. We students are the waving, youthful leaves Who from the fruitful, knowledge hearing root 'l'he golden and instructive sap receive. But only after reaching our new shoot rl'hrough branches which must useful knowledge flingi We students receive the pow'r to learn: We can ring The bells of the future with the ropes of the past. Without the root. the most important part, Without the branches, and without the trunlt, We leaves would wither, and then faded departi But as it is, the sap of which we've drunk Soon after frosts, begins to make us sing And implant this motto as we leave: We'll ring The bells of the future with the ropes of the past. In the opening game with the Alumni, composed of stars of yesteryears. the lighter varsity rompcd to a 6 to 0 victory. This game was a battle of punts. passes and fumbles. The heavy line of the Alumni stopped repeated attaclxs by the younger team, but the varsity capitalized on its one big chance and won. For the seventh time in eight contests, the llaclsettstown team defeated Somerville High School. A long punt downed on the Somerville three yard line led to a safety, a Z-ll victory margin for llacleettslown. l'.loie Slanowicv, and l,ynn Vifh-elan broke through the line to spill Some:-ville's fullback, Zalano, be hind the goal line for the score. An 85 yard return of a lxicls off and an lfl yard forward pass after an in terception, enabled llacltettstown to defeat l5oonton lligh School by the score of I4 to ll. 'l'he scoring came in the third period. Noble tools the kick-off on his own I5, ran lfl yards, lateralled lo Stanowicz who ran 75 yards lor a score. A few plays later, l,ester Schroeder intercepted a pass on the lioonton ZZ and tools a pass from Schmeal for the second touchdown. ln the next game, flacleettstown and flranltlin High School battled to a scoreless tie at firanlxlin. ln the second period a sustained drive by llaclxetts town placed the ball on f5ranltlin's Z0 yard line when a l5 yard penalty for hold' ing was inflicted on Hackettstown, Again in the fourth period the ball was on Franlxlin's 20, from where an attempted field goal by Schmeal failed to clear the cross bars. Traveling to Flemington for the game, the Hunterdon County Seaters were handed a l8 to O defeat, Stanowicz scoring two touchdowns and David Smith, one. Fighting back a supposedly mighty Dover High School team, who had rested two weeks in an endeavor to sweep its smaller opponents from the unde- feated class, Hackettstown rose to the heights to defeat the Morris County team, in a scholastic upset, by the score of 20 to O. Hackettstown. conceded little chance of victory before the game, got off to a poor start, when Schmeal fumbled two Dover punts. which the kickers recover- ed and permitted them to penetrate to Hackettstowns 28 yard line. For the third straight year, the win- ning of the Mile Relay was the factor that gave a well-earned victory to Hack tttstown. ln nine events, we won four first places, five second places and all the thirds. Bruce Schmeal showed mid-season form in winning the lOO-Yard Dash and the Broad Jump and in placing second in the High Jump. ln the Mile, James Mooney was second and Gustave Kovolsky was third. We took the same places in the Half Mile. This time Alvah Thomas was second and Walter Stafford was third. Noel Hatfield accounted for three of the third places. These were in the Broad Jump, the High Jump and the 220-Yard Dash. A new pole vaulter was discovered in Martin Noble who won this event. Walter Stafford was third. ln the only weight event of this meet, namely, the Shot Put, Alex Bonar made a Hne heave for second place and Joseph Stanowicz followed for a third. The victorious Mile Relay team was composed of Raymond Vey, Alvah Thomas, Lester Schroeder and Charles Robinson. The competition was keener than it had been for several years at the Bi' County Track and Field Meet held at Phillipsburg on May l5. However, we managed to bring home the trophy awarded at this meet for the Hfth consecu- tive year. Only four schools from the counties of Hunterdon and Warren were represented. Individual medals were awarded for nrst, second and third places. We again showed our supremacy in the sprints by winning both the IOO and 220-Yard Dashes. Bruce Schmeal won the former and Alex Bonar the latter. Joseph Stanowicz came through nicely to win the Discus and score a second in the Shot Put. Joseph Kolbas throw in the Javelin was under last year's record but it was good enough to win. Our aerialists, Walter Stafford and Martin Noble, took first and second respectively in the Pole Vault. Bruce Schmeal won another first place in the Broad Jump and Noel Hatfield was second in the same event. Our mile relay team came in second to Phillipsburg in a fast race. lt was the same team that ran against Belvidere except that Walter Stafford ran in place of Charles Robinson. Our next meet was with Dover. Both boys and girls always participate in this athletic event. Our girls won quite easily but the boys bowed to a strong Dover team. Joseph Kolba was first in the Javelin and Joseph Stanowicz was second in the Discus and Shot Put. We were shut out in the distance races and the Mile Relay but Raymond Vey managed to score a third place in the 440-Yard Run, ln the sprints, Bruce Schmeal and Noel Hatfield were second respectively in the 100 and 220-Yard Dashes. Alex Bonar was handicapped with a pulled muscle or he would undoubtedly have figured in the scoring in the sprint events. In the jumping events, Walter Stafford won the Pole Vault and Martin Noble tied for second placeg Bruce Schmeal won the Broad Jump: and Noel Hatfield and Bruce Schmeal tied for third place in the High Jump. For the girls, Evelyn Marsteller raced to a first in the 50-Yard Dash. Bette Cooper was second in the lOO-Yard Dash and third in the 50-Yard Dash. The relay team ran a fine race to win this event. The team was composed of Evelyn Marsteller, Bette Cooper, Marion Tinsman and Caroline Kowal. Helen One Hundred and Thirtu-three v- x Q. kiwi af' W IG? f,l7llrlflllllIflll1fl ll :rwgr X . Ethel Hoefly tied for second place in the Broad Jump, Ethel was painfully injured in this event and could not compete in the Baseball Throw or the Basketball Throw, Mary Socker gained a third place in the Basketball Throw as did Esther Reedell in the High Jump. On May 29, the team journeyed to Roxbury to compete in the nrst Tri- County Track and Field Meet. There were four schools represented, namely Dover, Roxbury, Boonton and Hackettstown. We came out third in this meet. Roxbury was Hrst and Dover finished second. Two of the outstanding performances of this meet were the winning of the IOO-Yard Dash against a Hne array of sprinters by Bruce Schmeal and the record throw made by Joseph Kolba in the Javelin. Bruce Schmeal also set a new school record when he won second place in the High Jump. The former record of 5' 6 made by George Mcljeak has stood for ten years. Bruce Schmeal bet tered this by l !'Q inches. To complete the day he scored a point by taking fourth place in the Broad Jump. Joseph Stanowicf hguretl in the scoring again with a second place in the Discus and a fourth place in the Shot ljut. Walter Stalliord did Well in taking second place in the Pole Vault. Alex Bonar wasn't quite hack in form but managed to bring in a fourth place in the Zltl Yard Dash. Our relay team placed third. The members of the relay team in the order ol' run ning were: Lester Schroeder, Alvah Thomas, Charles Robinson and Raymond Vey. Our captain, Robert Sutton, was unable to compete in any meets this year because of a physical ailment. He had been an outstanding performer in the Pole Vault, High Jump and Mile Relay for three years and his services were missed very much to say the least.
