Once again we will wish to revive youthful friendshipsg once again we will wish to remember the teachers without whose guidance we would never have gained success, and once again we will wish merely to be within the walls of our Alma Mater. On the pages of this book are preserved glimpses into our high school years so that in the future we may turn to it to relive all the high school events that have molded our lives. 4 For your steady devotion and kindly interest which have greatly enriched our lives in Hackensack High School, we, the class of 1955, with a deep sense of appreciation and respect consider it an honor and privilege to dedicate this book to you, Helen St. John Clarke. We shall always be grateful for their untiring efforts in our behalf and for their sincere interest in the success of our high school. L ynn F ranchavilla 91 '1 ARSENIC AND OLD LACE The outstanding event of the theatrical season of 1954-55 in Hackensack was by all odds the production of Arsenic and Old Lace, by the Class of 1955 of Hackensack High School on Friday and Saturday nights, February 18 and 19, at the Hackensack High School Auditorium. The cast started work on the extravaganza after the Christ- mas vacation and labored feverishly right up until curtain time. It was the first Senior Play at HHS in some fifteen years. There were many aesthetic and artistic reasons which inspired the production, the chief of which, being money tmost of which helped pay for this publication you are now readingl. ln case anyone was taking a vacation in Iceland at the time, here, once again, is a review of the plot: Arsenic and Old Lacev is the story of two very lovable and kind-hearted old ladies, Abby and Martha Brewster, who like to help their lonely elderly gentlemen friends out of their misery and out of this world with a little well-placed arsenic. Their competitive in- stincts are stirred even further by their nephew, Jonathan, who also provides people with free transportation to the hereafter, only for much less altruistic reasons. Dr. Einstein fHerman, that isj assists Jonathan in his charitable undertakings. The two old ladies have a very illustrious nephew, Teddy Brewster, who prefers to be known as Teddy Roosevelt. He has accomplished the almost super-human task of building the Panama Canal in, of all places, the cellar of the Brewster family home. Then there is Mortimer Brewster, a drama critic, who, by an odd coincidence, happens to be sane. Mortimer's romantic interests center around Elaine Harper, the daughter of the minister, Bev. Dr. Harper, who lives next door across the grave- yard. The police force is naturally very friendly to the two kind-hearted old ladies, and is well represented by Lt. Rooney, and Officers Brophy, Klein, and O,Hara. Two of the old ladies, gentlemen friends are Mr. Gibbs and Mr. Witherspoon. There is a story behind the story in any big production- what goes on backstage. How can members of the cast ever for- get the many long ,hours of rehearsal time they put in and the humorous little incidents that happened. For instance: Joe Durante as Teddy had a line in the play 6'Charge the blockhousef' One day during rehearsal he made a slip and Hblockhousev came out outhouse. And in every rehearsal afterwards he made a point of saying outhouse, much to the chagrin of Director Emrich, who was convinced he would make the same mistake during the play itself. Then there is the question as to why the wallpaper appeared upside down in the scenery. Could be the stage crei was sampl- ing some of the contents of the Brewster's wine deeanter. Mr. Emrich had quite a time getting Diana and Cookie to stop bounding across the stage like they were teenagers and act like old ladies. Wonder why? lncidentally the 1955 Annual Report of the P. Lorrillard Tobacco Company should show a healthy rise in profits as Director Emrich was rarely observed when not encircled by a great smoke screen during rehearsals. He is also reported to have much shorter fingernails than he used to. Bill Di Crosta is reported to have turned in an outstanding rehearsal role as prima donna. But when they tried to put lip- stick on him the night of the performance, the roof fell in. He finally submitted, though, after much persuasion by everyone around. Lee Brown threw a few fits when she looked in the mirror after being made up by Miss 0,Connell. She was ranting and raving all over the place about looking like Dracula, and it took Miss O'Connell several anxio-us moments to convince her that she would look great to the audience. Miss 0'Connell, as the person behind the staging, probably did not have exactly this in mind when she took the job, but on the second night at the end of the first act the door came off its hinges and she was left holding it for the remainder of the play. Bruce Kover and Lee Brown had quite a time getting the romantic sequences down pat as neither of them felt very natural about it. There were tempermentalities all o-ver the place what with Diana taking a strong dislike to the line, Oh, I'm so glad, which she was to say, very gushily, and throwing tantrums every time it came up. Diana also didnlt take too kindly to all the cornstarch they put in her hair to make it look gray. There was more make-up trouble on the second night of the play when Mr. Emrich and Bruce Barkman couldn't get the right make-up on Cookie. First it was too orange, then it was too pink. She must have looked sweet. lt took five applications of make-up to get it right, with a base, grease paint, and powder for each one. By the time the curtain went up, Cookie,s face felt like sandpaper. During one of the performances, Bruce Barkman dramatically stumbled across the stage in the dark and equally dramatically ran into the table, causing one of the legs to fall off. Then, more tragedy, as the body was being pulled through the win- dow, the drapes fell off, confusing everything no end. Inciden- tally, that body was very cooperative the way it got banged around without saying anything. ' It was also very dramatic when Cookie was weeping and wailing and pounding the couch during the play and the dust rose in great clouds. Someone should have supplied the stage crew with a whisk-broom. Then who can forget Dick Bader's matching red argyles to go with his police uniform, when Bruce Kover knocked over a chair during the actual play, the marathon rehearsal session the night before the play which didnit break up until 11 o,clock, and the many other incidents. All in all, the Senior Play in 1955 was quite something. Everything about it was top-notch and it will never be forgotten by anyone who had anything to do with it. The Senior Class production of Arsenic and Old Lace ' is certainly a big part of the mark the Class of 1955 leaves in the halls of HHS. 93 CHEERLEADER Hackensack High is immensely proud of its varsity cheerleaders because of their thrilling perform- ance, fine sportsmanship, and ever- abundant school spirit. GIRLS' SPORT PROGRAM The girls' section of the physical education department is very active during the whole school year. The program they offer is varied, and offers girls the chance for healthy recreation. Usually in the fall and spring, the after-school sports move outside. But this year due to the construction of new wing, the playing field has been done away with. The different sports are divided between team and individual, with some of each at each season. In the fall, they had volleyball and archery. Volleyball looks easy, but surprisingly needs skill. All the girl Robin Hoods went out for archery, and tried to hit the bull,s-eye! Around December, bowling started and lasted until March, when there was a huge tournament. After Christmas, the winter sports began in earnest. There were basketball, foul shooting, and table tennis. The basketball games were exciting, and after all the scheduled games had been played, a group of the best players out of the teams, were divided up into two honor teams. This year the spring sports were different than usual, in- cluding service ball and ring tennis. Service ball is played just like volleyball, but with a huge ball. Ring tennis which is also called deck tennis, is played by two teams tossing a rubber ring across the net. The individual sports were archery and badminton. The girls' sports program comes to a climax, at the big Awards Assembly in June. All the girls who were on first place teams and the winners of the tournaments receive recognition at this time. Also at this assembly, an award is given to a senior who is the most outstanding girl athlete. A fitting finish to a wonderful year of sports and activities. BOWLING Left to right, back to front: M.
