LOWE We gratefully dedicate this book to our principal, Dr. Boutelle Lowe, who, by ex- ample as well as by precept, has taught us the value of character. As a man, he had exemplified justice, sincerity, integrity, devotion to duty, and respect for the rights of othersg as a leader, he had demonstrated the ability to visualize, to organize, to deputize, and to supervise. Above all, he had inspired us to emulate all these qualities, so con- spicuous in him: and we shall regret the loss of his influence but be the better for having been exposed to it. 5 ear ole! golden rufe cfaiys, ADMINISTRATION E. LOWE BOUTELLE DR' PrinclPal The judgment and foresight of our skilled administrators is largely re- sponsible for the high achievement of Hackensack High School. Every phase of our school life is deter- mined hy their thoughts and plans. We want to express our gratitude for the wise guidance and help they have given us. R T D Sllperzbge H 05,5 U YT CHARLES D. These girls. who practice after school nearly every day. can be found at many sports events out in front cheering the team on to vie- tory. This year with the enthusiastic support and cooperation of the students, the cheerleaders won the Sportsmanship Award at the final game of the Bergen County Jamboree. The hard work and time spent at practice by the girls was well worth the effort. as the memory of the award will be cherished hy all of them. Q 1 1 1310 gogkxknljx LM: V.-gk K u-'W '. Because they tied the last game of the season with Teaneek, 1-1, Teaneck and Englewood took first place in the N.N.J.l.L. leaving Hackensack in third place. Among our outstanding players this season was All- County Robert Demarest, our wing. He was a skillful and confident kicker and always knew what to do in a tough situation. Another important player was Robert Barratt, Whitey,', who received a position on the second All- County Team. Although small. Whitey,, was a rough player and always where you needed him. Gene Walner, our Captain, also made the second All-County Team, in recognition of his outstanding goal defense. Assisting him before the goal, was Fred Bodner, who received a well-deserved honorable mention. This combination of Walner and Bodner was an important reason for our successful year. Although Russ llermond saw more action last year, he also played very well this season. The team's thanks goes to their patient Coach, Chet Demarest. His emphasis of the fundamental soccer skills certainly helped the team demonstrate improved playing ability. GIRLS' SPORT PROGRAM Almost every afternoon in the gym or on the field one is able to see a group of enthusiastic girls taking part in the girl's sports program. This varied pro- gram provides health and recreation for its participants. In the fall field hockey is the major interest. This is the season of hockey sticks and bruised ankles. Also in the fall is speedball, a fast field game combining soccer, basketball and football. But soon there is a chill in the air and the girls move from the frozen ground outside to the gym. During the winter the major team sports are basketball and volleyball. Competition among the teams is keen, especially in basketball, and often results in a tie for first place which must be decided in an exciting play off game. ln addition there are such individual sports as badminton and table tennis. Here again, the winner cannot he judged until the final match is over. Once again the weather turns warm and the girls move outside to the field. Softball and soccer are the spring sports. Softball is the most popular sport of the year. The number of participants is greater than in any sport. In .l une all students who have participated in the sports program are hon- ored at the Awards Assembly. Awards are given to each winning team and to the winners of the tournaments. The program is extensive with lots of action and excitement, and interesting to any sports minded girl. Q' letifff BOWLING TEAM Top to bottom. left to right: Louise Kern, Sadie Ruta, Lenora Egli. It was the beginning of the end of our secondary education, education which included social, civic and physical development as well as reading, 'riting, and frithmetic. After finding our homerooms Qwith much difficultyi , we gave a sigh of relief, not realizing we'd have to go through the same agony for each new class. We had so much to learn about our new life in HHS! If some upperclassman had taken us in confidence, we would have been able to spend those 'spare minutes of our first few days learning new faces, instead of looking for the back stairs to the third floor or trying to locate 314 in the basement. Study halls were really a new experience. No teachers! Many of us took our first HHS re- sponsibility, as proctors. Ah, to be a sophomore proctor with a study hall full of seniors! Within a week we felt as if we'd known HHS all our lives. The extra curricular activi- ties schedule presented a problem: Which ones didn't we want? Time passed, the new semester came. We had our first class election. There were probably more candidates for that one election than for our other two put together. The pep talk given to us by our class advisor, Mr. Della Torre, inspired us to be the best dues-paying class in the history of HHS ftwo years were yet to passj . Our class spirit and enthusiasm was carried over to our Sophomore Hop, which was an over- whelming success under the leadership of our officers, George Riester, President, Helen Huyler, Vice-Presidentg. Dixie Sawyer, Secretary, and Paul Hartman, Treasurer. In June we had our final initiation into HHS, final exams. The exams .themselves were not half as bad as the agonizing hours of review and fears. Our Junior Year is tucked away with fond memories of a champion football team and season. Saturday, clear and brisk, became the day of the week with a game in the afternoon and a date in the evening. We were becoming more and more aware of HHS as OUR school, and we found ourselves growing more mature as we met new situations. During the year, we experienced two losses - the deaths of Mr. Soare, a teacher, and Mr. Thompson, our Vice-Principal. We felt united in a spirit of gratefulness and honor for having known both of them. When June rolled afound, our Junior Congress, under the leadership of Don Sgro, President, Helen Huyler, Vice President, and Carol Hibbard, Secretary, dissolved with and almost dry treasury. The long awaited year arrived! We were Mighty Seniors. Our supremacy was often Haunted unnecessarily, but that was our privilege. We wondered how just two years ago we could have been half so juvenile as the incoming Sophs. We acquainted ourselves with the large number of new faculty members and prepared the school inside and out for the visiting evaluation committee. The special program, portraying the life of HHS, gave us added pride as we recognized our school's prominence in many activities. The Comet Staff was humming like bees getting the pictures snapped and the write-ups completed for the yearbook. Senior Congress was equally busy. Beat Buttons , football programs, Christmas cards had to be sold! Soon any person who had ambitions to be a salesman was discovered and the treasury was about one-third along the way. Then the news was released like a New York Times EXTRA: Dr. Lowe was to retire. Knowing how fortunate we were to have felt his influence, we regretted that future classes would not know him. April 24, 1954- is another date to be treasured in our memories of HHS. We put on our tucks', and formals, became ladies and gentlemen of society, and made our dreams come true at our Senior Prom. Graduation was drawing near as we completed our final exams and started re- hearsals. The days had wings and our hearts were light. Excitement, fear, disappoint- ment, and happiness were all part of our three year's stay at Hackensack High School, which ended on our graduation day, Wednesday, June 23, 1954. 4- WW E '19, : 'Q I lg 2 i 1 611 KN :X P X X 3 iii' ' its-' is oz- ' . it 1 it.
