Text from Pages 1 - 120 of the 1988 volume:

PRINCIPAL As all of you know, this year we lost someone very dear to us. Let us learn from the example she set for us. Life is a precious gift and should not be wasted. We should use the talents and abilities we have to the fullest. We should love one another and treat our fellow man with respect. Keep in mind the words of Grenville Kleiser: Your life is like a book. The title page is your name; the preface your introduction to the world. The pages are a daily record of your efforts, trials, pleasures, discouragements, and achievements. Day by day your thoughts and acts are being inscribed in your book of life. Hour by hour, the record is being made that must stand for all time. Once the word 'finis' must be written. Let it then be said of your book that it is a record of noble purpose, generous service, and work well done. All of us, young and old, should keep these words in mind as we live our lives. Each day should be dear to us and lived to its fullest. Pam LaFleur, Principal SCHOOL BOARD MEMBER 1987-88 has been a productive year for Hackberry High School. Regardless of many adverse happenings, Hackberry High and the Hackberry Community have rallied together and conquered, allowing us to surge forward. Economic conditions at present will make the going tough; however, by working together as a unit we can accomplish great things. We must give of ourselves in order to offer a top rate education for our children. They are the main commodity of our state. They arc our future and must be given top priority in order to flourish as our future leaders. A school is a school. But a community working together with a school establishes an educational facility that can be classified as nothing less than a No. 1 School. Let's continue to work for this classification. We have the formula (school personnel and students + community involvement = a No. I School ) to maintain this status, even with the economic crisis. We may have to tighten our belts, but let's not give our young people anything less than the best. They deserve the very best, and we must see to it that they get this — nothing less. It helps students to become responsible workers, promote their self-awareness, and to become aware of what they are capable of. This year the club raised money by selling ads and by sponsoring a New Year Eve s Dance. Special thanks go out to all the parents who helped sell ads and chaperoned the dance. This year s head editor was C. C. Walt her. Rachael Ducoce and Theresa Simon were assistant editors. Cynthia Pearson was the photographer. Each contributed greatly to make this a better yearbook. Unfortunately for us, Theresa could not finish this year out with us. We hope this yearbook is finished in a way that she would be proud of. The yearbook club hopes that this year’s MUSTANG annual is one that you can open in the future and smile about as you reflect back on all the memories and good times. It’s like our theme says; That's What Friends Are For! I ll be on your side forever more Library Club The membership in the Library Club is composed of high school students who art interested in library work. The Mustangs were picked to finish no higher than third in District, responded to the challenge, finished the year District Co-Champs, and advanced to the State Play-offs for the second year in a row. Tying for the District championship was no surprise to the Mustangs (not after the Pre-District schedule they played). Let's look at the stats this team posted this year: 1 — Played in 7 tournaments and advanced to the finals in all 7. 2 — Captured the championship in the Grand Lake Tour- nament — Jennings Tournament — Bell City Tournament — and Parish Tournament. 3 — Defeated Barbe, St. Louis, Welsh, Crowley, Eunice, just to list a few. 4 — Posted a 31-10 Overall Record. 5 — Lost to only one team that did not make it into the State Play-offs. In years to come when people look back at this team with all the ups and downs they had, the final conclusion will be They Were Winners'! 4J LADY The Hackberry Lady Mustangs had another very good year, finishing with a record of 29-10 and a regional championship. After moving to Class B and being placed in the same district as the defending Class B State Champs, Starks, and the powerhouse Lacassine, the Lady Mustangs worked hard for their second place finish in district. Once into the playoffs, the Lady Mustangs faced Melville, another second place team and advanced to regionals. After a long- distance trip to Albany, La., the Lady Mustangs defeated a very tough Doyle team with a record of 35-4. Next stop was the state quarterfinals The Lady Mustangs would play a very powerful Pitkin team that had compiled a 39-3 record to this point. After a slow start and down 16 to 4, the Lady Mustangs started their move. Fighting back hard, the Lady Mustangs fell just two points short for the fourth year in a row. The Sweet 16 had eluded the ladies again. Even though the record may not indicate it, this was the most successful year the Lady Mustangs have ever had. Let's take a look: Out of the 19 teams the Lady Mustangs played, 17 made the playoffs. Out of those 17, 5 went to the Sweet-16 and out of those 5, 2 were State Champions (Pitkin and Jennings). The teams the Lady Mustangs lost to had a combined district record of 51-1. Hackberry, having the lowest enrollment of any Class B school in the state, did well. With only one senior, Tressa LaFleur, the Lady Mustangs took first in the Bell City, Fenton, and Hackberry Tournaments. This season the Lady Mustangs have been barraged with injuries. Most notable was Marcie Duhon's knee injury in the first district game. Marcie was Hackbcrry's designated 3-pt. shooter. Tara Sanders and Theresa Simon, with undetermined injuries, left the ladies with only ten girls dressing out. Despite the loss of these 3 players, this was truly a great season for the Lady Mustangs. A congratulations to Monise Seay and Tiffany Kyle for being selected first team all district. Melanie Blanchard was chosen to second team and Dee Dee Abshire was awarded Honorable Mention. A warmest and deepest congratulations to all the girls over the last four years who have compiled a 123-28 win-loss record. They have made it to the playoffs every year and lost out by a total of only 8 points. Congratulations! You should be proud. •To my one senior: Thanks for the effort, the hard work, and the caring. I wish you only the best, for you have earned it. You should be proud of your efforts; 1 am. Coach Eddie Michalko Pictured here, adding 2 more points to the score is our only senior Lady Mustang, Tressa LaFleur Good fob Tressa and good luck in the future. And, as the days passed swiftly by, it spread its branches, straight and tall One day, a beam of light shone through a crevice that had opened wide — ■ The rose bent gently toward its warmth, then passed beyond to the ocher side . Now, you who deeply feel its loss, be comforted — the rose blooms there Its beauty even greater now, natured by God's own loving care. THERESA SIMON m - ' Vtf£r SAFELY HOME I am home in Heaven, dear ones. Oh. so happy and so bright1 There is perfect joy and beauty In this everlasting light All the pain and grief is over. Every restless tossing passed 1 am now at peace forever. Safely home in Heaven at last Did you wonder I so calmly Trod the valley of the shade? Oh! but Jesus' love illumined Every dark and fearful glade And He came Himself to meet me In that way so hard to tread And with Jesus' arm to lean on. Could I have one doubt or dread7 Then you must not grieve so sorely. For I love you dearly still Try to look beyond earth's shadows. Pray to trust our Father s Will There is work still waiting for you. So you must not idly stand Do it now. while life remaineth — You shall rest in Jesus land When that work is all completed. He will gently call you Home; Oh the rapture of that meeting. Oh. the joy to see you come! EDITORS Our yearbook theme is friendship. Being editors has required extra work, but it has been worthwhile. Our friendships have helped us through good times and bad. There are too many memories for all to be recorded in one yearbook. We hope this annual will serve to recreate the special moments of this year. May it bring you happy memories. Cecilia Rachael Theresa Autographs Taylor Publishing Company 3 £
