It is not often that one sees the outpouring of support which we were fortunate enough to experience this year. From time to time, one hears criticism of ex- tracurricular activities taking away from academics. I feel the opposite is true. Our clubs and organizations contribute greatly to the development of such qualities as character, leadership, pride in one’s work, and consideration of one’s fellow man to mention a few. In addition, we have met with much success through club com- petition and officers being elected at the district and state levels. Our athletic programs develop similar qualities and have met with successes never before achieved at this school. I am proud of the accomplishments of our athletes and coaches and want to take the opportunity to commend them for a job well done. I also want to thank the community for its sup- port. Let us learn from our experiences this year and continue to work together to make Hackberry High School the best. God Bless All of You, Pam LaFleur, Principal We are born totally dependent, and every step we take toward adulthood is a step toward in- dependence and autonomy. There are times during these years that we feel things don’t always go right. However, when we do achieve our in- dependence, we should be able to take control of our lives and make things happen for us. There is a special art to living because things don’t always function the way they are planned. You have to be able to learn and profit from your mistakes and strive even harder to achieve your goals. There will be many challenges to be faced, but the harder you try, the easier things will get. The main thing is not to waste your time waiting for the world to give you the things you want. Work for them. Remember, you have to be able to climb the mountain in order to appreciate the view. Each has con- tributed an awful lot to compose a yearbook that is well-balanced. Pictured right are our editors. K. K. Pear- son and C. C. Walther, who are always fishing around” for a way to improve the yearbook. One main accomplishment that the year- book club did this year was to raise enough money to pay for last year’s debt plus this year’s cost for this new yearbook. In order to do this, several fund-raisers were held. They were the raffling off of a VCR, the sponsoring of a New Year’s Eve Dance, the hosting of a basketball tournament, and the selling of ads. The sponsors gave the club a crawfish boil to honor them for doing such a good job raising money. The sponsors would also like to thank the club for working so hard on the yearbook. Pictured below is the club. 24 Library Club The membership in the Library Club is composed of high school students who are interested in library work. The objective of the Library Club is to in- crease interest participation in library work. Library Clubs promote friendship cooperation between students, librarian, staff. Also the Library Club wishes to at- tract good pupil assistants to arouse in- terest in librarianship as a profession. The officers from left to right are Kenny Kyle, Marty Boudreaux, Corey Billedeaux, and Wesley Vaughan. 25 Future Homemakers Of America Top Left—Sweetheart—Damon, Miss FHA—Tina Runners-Up—Melissa, Vemice, Shana, Denise, Glenda Beaux—Joey Garon Top Right — Members of FHA Bottom Left—Advisor, Mrs. Vickie Parker Bottom Right—Pres.—Michelle, Vice-Pres. —Denise, Sec.—Marty Treas.—Jennifer, Pari.—Valerie, Hist.—Tina, Rep.—Glenda, Song Ldr.—Stephanie • Homecoming Alumni Open House Servers: Ray, Tina, Stephanie Denise —1987-88 Diet. Ernie currently holds a high school wrestling state championship title—a title he has been the proud bearer of for four years: 1984, 98 lb. division; 1985, 105 lb. division; 1986, 112 lb. division; 1987, 126 lb. division. He is only the second competitor in 20 years of Louisiana Athletic Association history to have held championship titles for 4 consecutive years. In honor of this tremendous feat, the Cameron Parish Police Jury designated March 6,1987 Emie Payton Day, and the School Board presented him with a resolution. Not only is Emie an accomplished athlete, but he is also well-rounded academically. As a freshman, he received an Honorable Mention for his entry in the McNeese State University Science Fair. He was also Hackberry’s represen- tative for District Literary Rally in General Science; he placed 5th. His sophomore year, Emie placed again in District Literary Rally and represented the district at State Literary Rally in biology. As a junior, he demonstrated his leadership abilities. He became Wrestling Team captain (a position he held through his senior year) and was HHS’s Boy’s State representative. Emie has always been an honor student. He was HHS’s Valedictorian of the 1987 graduating class. He is also a member of Who’s Who Among American High School Students. An active member of First Baptist Church, Emie finds inspiration in the Lord. His favorite scripture is John 12:26 in which Jesus is responding to Andrew and Philip: “If any man serve me, him will my Father honor.” Thank you, Emie, for these contributions to Hackberry High School! 97 The Mustang Basketball Team posted one of the most successful seasons in the history of the school, with the highlight being an appearance in the State Top 24 Basketball Tournament. The year according to Coach Gibbs is divided in- to three seasons; Pre-District—District—and the State Playoffs, and with each new season the inten- sity of play must increase because the importance of the games increases. In the pre-season schedule, the Mighty Mustangs posted an impressive record of 20 wins and 6 losses. Included in those victories were first place finishes in the Parish and Grand Lake Tournaments. Also the Mustangs competed in three other tour- naments placing third in the Hathaway and Midland Tournaments and winning consolation honors in the Sam Houston Tournament. As Coach Gibbs stated with the start of District play, the intensity level increased and the Mustangs rose to the occasion posting a 10-1 record and capturing the District Championship for only the second time in 24 years. With a first place finish in District, the Mustangs now entered the third Season—the State Playoffs—and again the Mustangs climbed that next plateau. In the Bi-District game, the Mustangs defeated Plainview 60-51. Then in regionals, they faced Fairview (a team picked to win state), and again the Mustangs were victorious posting a hard-fought 51 to 46 overtime victory. Then it was on to New Orleans to face Word of Faith for the Quarter-finals and the right to appear in the Top 24 Tournament. The Mustangs showed why they deserved to be where they were by com- pletely dominating the game from start to finish and posting an impressive 74 to 51 victory, earning berth in the Top 24. The Top 24 was something special for the Mustangs because only one other team for Hackberry had ever achieved this feat. In the State Semi-Finals, the Mustangs faced a team from Plea- sant Hill that in 1985 had captured the state cham- pionship, and unfortunately for the Mustangs, the lack of playoff experience showed. The Mustangs dropped a heart breaker to Pleasant Hill 56 to 49. With the loss the Mustangs were by no means a loser, for the Mighty Mustangs had posted one of the best seasons ever (33-8) and had taken a com- munity and placed it on the map. 98 The Hackberry Lady Mustangs had a very good year but also a disappointing one. For the third year in a row, the Lady Mustangs lost by 2 pts. in the playoffs. On the bright side the Lady Mustangs completed their season 33-8 and won their third consecutive district crown. Over the last three years the Lady Mustangs have compiled a 94-18 win-loss record. Along with winning the parish tournament for the third year in a row, the Lady Mustangs took first in the Grand Lake Tourna- ment, second in the Sam Houston Tournament, and consolation in the Hathaway Tournament. The Freshmen Team claimed their fifth champion- ship in a row in the girls’ parish tournament. Coach Michalko would like to thank all the girls for their hard work and dedication and bid farewell to Tobie Blanchard and Krystal LaBove. Their abilities will be missed. This year’s All-District players were Monise Seay—Most Valuable Player, Tobie Blan- chard—1st Team, Tiffany Kyle—2nd Team, Melanie Blanchard—2nd Team, and Krystal LaBove—Honorable Mention. This year’s All-State players were Monise Seay and Tobie Blanchard as Honorable Mention. 99 Awards Day Honor Roll Perfect Attendance Student of the Year—5th 7th gr.
