I always hope that through this brief message parents and students can be reminded of the blessings for which we should be thankful. We have an outstanding student body. Community support and interest in the school are tremendous. We have a faculty and staff who are totally dedicated to the task of educating our youth and meeting the needs of the school and community. There is no charge for the quality of students we have. There is no charge for the support of the com- munity, and the dedication of the faculty and staff. In my office I have a poster which says, The best things in life are free.” There is no charge for good behavior, a helping hand, taking the extra step, a warm and friendly smile, a pat on the back, or for caring. All of these free items can be found in Hackberry. and in my opinion, are what go together to make our school and community a place of which I am proud to be a part. School Board Member's Message The opportunity to share thoughts through a message in the Hackberry High School Yearbook is always appreciated. This year I would like to share some thoughts regarding human relations, which is a necessary ingredient for suc- cess in life. A very successful businessman once said runn- ing a business is about 95% people and 5% economics. THE TEN COMMANDMENTS OF HUMAN RELATIONS 1. Speak to people. There is nothing as nice as a cheerful word of greeting. 2. Smile at people. It takes 72 muscles to frown, only 14 to smile. 3. Call people by name. The sweetest music to anyone's ear is the sound of his or her own name. 4. Be friendly and helpful. If you would have friends, be friendly. 5. Be cordial. Speak and act as if everything you do is a genuine pleasure. 6. Be genuinely interested in people. You can learn to like everybody if you try. 7. Be generous with praise — cautious with criticism. 8. Be considerate with the feelings of others. It will be appreciated. 9. Be thoughtful of the opinions of others. There usual- ly are three sides to a controversy — yours, the other person's, and the right one. 10. Be alert to fine service. What counts most in life is what we do for others. John A. FBLA — PBL CREED I believe free education is the right of every individual. I believe the future depends upon mutual understanding and cooperation of business, industry, labor, the home, the church, the school, and by the peoples of our own and other lands. I agree to do my utmost to bring about better understanding and cooperation on the part of all these groups. I believe every individual should prepare for a useful occupation, and should carry on that occupation in a manner that will bring the greatest good to the greatest number. I believe every individual should be actively interested in better social, political, community, and family life. I believe every individual has the right to earn a living at a useful occupation and that this right should not be denied because of race, color, creed, or sex. I believe every individual should take responsibility for carrying out assigned tasks in a manner that will reflect credit to oneself, one's Mrs Baker associates, school, and community. I believe I have the responsibility to work efficiently and to think clearly, and I promise myself to use my abilities to make the world a better place for everyone. 28 OFFICERS — Rhonda, Anita. Homes where living will be the expression of everything. That is good and fair. Homes where truth and love and security and faith Will be realities, not dreams. FFA CREED I believe in the future of farming, with a faith born not of words but of deeds — achievements won by the present and past generations of agriculturists; in the promise of better days through better ways, even as the better things we now enjoy have come to us from the struggles of former years. I believe that to live and work on a good farm, or to be engaged in other agricultural pursuit, is pleasant as well as challenging; for I know the joys and discomforts of agricultural life and hold an inborn fondness for those associations which, even in hours of discouragement, I cannot deny. I believe in leadership from ourselves and respect from others. I believe in my own ability to work efficiently and think clearly, with such knowledge and skills as I can secure, and in the ability of pro- gressive agriculturists to serve our own and the public interest in producing and marketing the pro- duct of our toil. I believe in less dependence on begging and more power in bargaining; in the life abundant and enough honest wealth to help make it so — for others as well as myself; in less need for charity and more of it when needed; in being happy myself and playing square with those whose happiness depends upon me. I believe that rural America can and will hold true to the best traditions of our national life and 30 that I can exert an influence in my home and community which will stand solid for my part in that in- spiring task. kODhO CLUB Herbie D . Teacher-Student Rela- tionship Merry Christmas 115 SAPE' — SUBSTANCE ABUSE PREVENTION THROUGH EDUCATION The SAPE' Program, as authorized by Act 546 of the 1979 State Legislature, requires that every public school system in Louisiana implement a K-12 plan that will substantially alleviate the harmful effects of mood-altering chemicals on our school age population The SAPE' Team's main function is to identify students who appear to be harmfully involved and refer them (or their parents) to the substance abuse professionals for diagnosis and treatment. In addi- tion, the SAPE' Team is trained to inservice faculty and staff, set up and facilitate the support groups for students, conduct a parent education program, and develop a unit on the effects of mood- altering chemicals for all students in their school, basically geared toward awareness. The key word to remember is awareness. SAPE' TEAM Pam LaFleur Francis Vincent Lorene Tanner Robert Henry Lloyd Broussard Beverly Goodrich Steve Racca Austin LaBove Anita Jo Trahan MEMORIAL TO MR. WELCH THE TWENTY-THIRD PSALM The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he loadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for I have enjoyed working on the Mustang Yearbook Staff for four years. It has been a challenging and rewarding experience I will never forget. The Mustang Staff and sponsor have worked really hard to put this yearbook together for precious memories we hope you will treasure in the years to come. As the school year comes to a close, this yearbook will hold a record of the wonderful times shared at Hackberry High. I would like to thank the staff for their help in putting this yearbook together. Also, I would like to give special thanks to Miss Kaufman for her time and support. I hope you enjoy this yearbook as much as I have enjoyed putting it together. 118 Editor Stacie Broussard
