The Council consists of two representatives from each graduating class, and four senior ollicers elected by over three hundred seniors. They are: President Raymond Narral, Vice President Robert Farley, Secretary Paul Hushin, Treasurer Robert Fernandez, and Mrs. Strunsky. Adviser. The Council prepared the Senior Day Outing Bus Ride to Bear Mountain where there it arranged inter-class baseball games and various other events. The Council also organized a dance club in prepara- tion for the Prom with Miss Weisner as dance instructor. This year's Prom was held at the beautiful Keystone room of the Hotel Statler. The Council also arranged a Senior Hat Contest and the winning hat was put on exhibition in the library. The Senior Council for the graduating class of January 1954 chose for oflicers, under the supervision of Mrs. Strunsky, President Paul Streichert, Vice President Hector Sanchez, and Class Representatives Lyle Beach and William Gallowitz. From left to right they are: President Griffin, Vice President Aversano, Secretary Francis. Seated is Mr. Weissenberg. G.O. Adviser. The G.O. othcers this term are backed up by experience. This is the second term of office as President of the General Organization for Joe Griflin. Before that he was Treasurer for one term. He also served on the Dance, Election and Publicity Committees. He has been a member of the City, Manhattan Council and a class delegate to the G.O. The G.O. is the students' organization. It sponsors all the teams and clubs that make up student-life in Haaren. The G.O. pays for uniforms. equipment and all the other materials used by our teams and clubs. Under the supervision of the Chairman. Vice President Aversano, and President Griffin, the Dance Committee sponsored a dance with Washington Irving. The achievements of this committee is shown by the low cost of admission, free refresh- ments and a dance contest and door prize at no extra cost. As usual everybody enjoyed themselves. The ancients prepared a product from papyrus and recorded their own events on it. ln thc past lew centuries we have put down in writing our daily activities in newspapers. lt shall he said in future years that the important happen- ings of Haaren High School were covered and recorded in a tablet called The Broadcast. Some of the problems discussed by the Student Cabinet have been traflic in corridors. modernization of the lunch- room. and a revised method of allowing service credits. We look back to September 1950 when we were FRESHMEN. Were we scared? Yes, but we were more overwhelmed and fascinated too. We walked the halls without uttering a word. We climbed the stairs at a fast pace to keep up with the seniors. We read the BROADCAST. We saw the Dean. The first year passed quickly as we learned the where. why, and how of the building. Before we knew it, summer vacation and one year had fled. September 1951 started our second year in DEAR OLD HAAREN. WE REMEMBER the coming of the FLY BOYS from the ANNEX. We re- member how sad they were because they could not eat lunch out, but just like us they had to climb to the sixth floor. In that second year came FIELD DAY at Van Cortlandt Park. And suddenly we found ourselves in classes taking REGENTS. The second year seemed the YEAR OF DECISION. A quick summer and school was back again. In the JUNIOR YEAR we met the G.O. full force. WE REMEMBER best the dances with Washington Irving and Julia Richman. We recall especially good looking girls, fancy clothes and a fine band. The G.O. elections became important. We listened more carefully than we had in the past to the promises of the candidates. Some boys became aware and a few were admitted to the school honor society. the ARISTA. Some athletically inclined brought the teams to a new high and made them known throughout the states of New York and Pennsylvania. Fall of 1953 came the SENIOR TERM and with it came expenses. We had to dip deep to pay for hats, rings, dues, yearbook, and pictures. WE RE- MEMBER the senior party, dancing, refreshments and a happy year. Now the heights for which we worked had at last been reached and GRADUATION DAY was coming nearer. At last it was here and suddenly freshman year seemed only yesterday. WE REMEMBER it all now and we WILL NEVER FORGET! IT Through Ike Yemfr me 1954 It's been four years since that sunny day in September 1950, when we Hrst gazed upon the structure we were to call our second home. We were just teen-agers then from all sections of New York City. Feeling like needles in a hay stack we promptly began our task of getting acquainted. A few weeks of playing the part of Little Boy Lost. and we were ready to call ourselves Haarenites. We soon began to learn the fine arts of getting early excuse passes. leading the lunchroom stampede, staying out of Mr. Shapiro's way and doing our delightful homework day after day including Friday and Saturday nights. In order to keep Mr. Weissenberg and our official teachers happy, we joined the G.O. The price, I still remember, was ten cents, including, of course, a fine set of Haarenite buttons. Our beloved English teachers kept saying, Buy the Broadcast, Dearie or Else. In the afternoon we all walked out of Haaren with a Broadcast under our arms. Sophomore Year found us looking forward to joining clubs and teams but alas for us that was the year when there were no extracurricular activities. We studied harder and harder and some of us managed to get on the Honor Roll. Things were beginning to get rough and as time passed we found ourselves looking forward to our Junior Year. Our Junior Year found some of us in Arista because of the work we had managed to struggle through. It was in this year that we welcomed Wednesdays because of the short periods. One Wednesday in particular we were marched into the Assembly. The G.O. elections were nearing and Mr. Hollis had his schedule built around the G.O. A candidate for G.O. ofhce began his speech but our eyes were glued to a weird yellow and blue Senior Hat, worn by one of the Seniors in the front row. Red lights were flashing off and on. We stared until our eyes saw nothing but red on the stage. Here we are, making the last turn, coming down the home stretch. This will tell whether or not we will qualify or Hunk. We're still not finished but our senior year makes us feel proud. There is plenty to do and more effort to be exerted. lt's too late to turn back and give up. Here's where we separate the men from the boys. All our classes seem to get harder. All of a sudden we find that we have been hit with a barrage of exams, knowledge of which has to be consumed. We put our heads down and begin to study. Some of our grades drop but we continue to shake off the dangerous fear of surrender. We knock off the stiff regents left and right. Finally wc sec our glorious senior term coming up. Well, we've made it! At last we're here! We have worked hard but it was worth it. We've passed the most important of all regents and we're on our way. God Bless Us All! IS Clam Celebffifzlaf Most Popular II Wittiest ,......AA I I I I Did Most For Haaren I I Heart Breaker II ..... As we flash back to our freshman year, the fall of ,51, the old colors were having their ups and downs in the athletic Held. At the close of the basketball year the team came to life with a five man varsity team working. With their new coach, Mr. Wertheim, they were bound to come through. Within less than two months, he had his team on the way. At the close of the season he had made four men stars: Henry Williams, Radcliff Davis, Harold Johnson, and Edwin Keusey. As the freshmen came into the school, there came with them a lot of outstanding athletes. Two of them made history in the track world, for no one can ever forget Seymour Bunyan and Ed Gardner. It was the Hrst time in the history of Haaren that it had two city champs, As we entered the spring season, the Blue and Gold relay came to life with the basketball and track teams showing great progress with the soccer team having such an outstanding player as Willy Schaller. He brought honor and glory to both himself and his school. He was chosen as a participant player of soccer and was sent to the Olympics at Helsinki in the sumer of 552. Also in the limelight was Tony Anthony. a boxing hero. Anthony had fought from Kansas City to Boston. He was a winner of the Golden Gloves Tournament held in New York and a winner of ww x SWIMMING TEAM CDelgado, Labenski, Nikolofl, Carbiaj Last Row: Rumph, Harwell, Berlinguette, Henry Watson Hushin. Center Row: Wiody, Whalen, Wong Cl ro First Row: Coach Duzant, Davidson, Sunzone, Fe nandez the Boston National. He also placed as number one contender for the Welter- weight Championship. He was one of the Olympic champions. At the time he was only sixteen years of age and a member of the C.Y.O. of New York City. ' As we approached the fall term, we had been at Haaren one year. We were no longer freshmen or lower termers. The swimming team with Coach King has a great squad of men. Fernandez, Creamo, Climo, Brocki, and many others showed Mr. King promise of becoming very good swimmers. The close of the swimming season proved Coach King was not wrong. His team placed third in the city. This was a great showing. The Blue and Gold Cross Country Team had D'Ocazio and Seymour Bunyan. In the Manhattan Championship the team placed second with Bun- yan and Robinson running away with the Meet. The team itself was good with men like Morton Thompson, Seymour Bunyan, Ed Gardner, and Ed Pabon. These boys had been scoring consistently during all that season. The team came home with six medals from one Meet. In all shows the Blue and Gold showed life. Haaren had the whole town aware of them. The Basketball Team was working with Coach Wertheim. Haaren hoopsters found themselves in a very good fourth place in the city standing. Haaren,s Soccer Team was com- ing along great. Mr. Chanin has a very young team, but it became one of the best in the City with men like Lozano, Spinosa. Perez, Archilla, Labrado and Chung. Up till now the Blue and Gold Track Team had its problems with the loss of men like Gender, West, and Bunyan. Bunyan won the indoor and out- door mile at the City Champs and there was no doubt in anyone's mind that the Track Team would come out on top with runners like Showell and Bunyan. This was the first time in the history of Haaren that it had a man to win both Indoor and Outdoor Championships. The men of the Blue and Gold had Haaren's great relay of Habersham, Burchett, Waterman, Showell, Fitzgerald, Jones and Robinson. This was the relay team that brought honor and glory to Haaren through the great coaching of Mr. Greenspan. Without him the team could not have been so successful in taking first place at the Seton Hall Relays and then going on to the Penn. Relays. At the close of the track season, most TRACK TEAM Last Row: Armstrong, Polena, Edwards, Pinckney, Brooks, Hawkins. Center Ro Lopez, Russell, Walker, Dixon, Ayala, Hunter, Kirby, Fischetti, Perez. Other relay teams came to life with Abe Mottel, Melvin Jonathan, Ed Fitzroy and Bill Jones, who at the Boro and City Championships, became champions. Don Showell equalled the record of the 220 yard dash. He came out with the crown of the City Champs. Milton Roberson successfully came in first, running the 1,000 yards in very good time. He too was crowned a City Champ. The Blue and Gold is well on its way as one of the top schools in the world of sports. Mr. Laster, Coach ofthe Rifle Team, has done very well in the past sea- son with his team. This team has joined the National Rifle Association. With the fine coaching of Coach Chanin the soccer team placed among the top three in Manhattan. The swimming team, with the coaching of Mr. King, placed third in the City. Mr. Wertheim's team had a little difficulty this year with the loss of his stars. This year the team has a better height aver- age with Bert Ferguson at 6 ft. 3 in. and Tommy Giles at 6 ft. 4M in. The other men showing talent are John Gibson, Dan Ford, Harry Howard, Ginger Francis and Art Reddick. It seems too that Coach Greenspan has another combination of medal winners with Bill Jones, A. Meachem, Bob Egstrom, Bob Fitzgerald and Abe Mottel. Now as we prepare to leave Haaren, we carry away one thought. Win, lose, or draw, if you are not a sport, you are starting in life at a loss!
