A MESSAGE TO THE SENIORS For a numher of weeks l have heen listening to a radio program telling how Hit can he donef, lf you have heard this program you know the stories of the many individuals who, in spite of almost staggering ditticulties, succeeded in their amhition, hecause they had the will to go ahead and could not he turned aside from their purpose. You who are starting out on a career, wish to succeed, not only for your own personal satisfaction, hut also for the sake of fullilling the hopes of your parents, who have sacri- ficed so much in order that you might have an education. What are the elements ot success? First of all, a consuming desire to accomplish some particular thing, a desire so strong that neither ditliculties nor lack of opportunity can thwart that desire. The goal to he reached must he clear in your own mind although the path to that goal may not he well marked. A good hook, a thrilling play or a masterpiece of music come into heing hecause the author is wholly wrapped up in his undertaking. Second, intense application to the task in hand. Many people who have talent never succeed hecause they lack the power to apply themselves. The race is not to the swift nor the battle to the strong unless their gifts are used to the laest advantage. More failures occur through discouragement than in any other way. lf your First attempt does not hring results try another and yet another' way. Say to yourself that there must he some Way of reaching the goal. H Third, it is a well known principle of psychology that, unless the faculty of effort is kept alive hy constant exercise, it gradually disappears. The price of success is constant, untiring ettort. ln the race of life remember that the fellow alongside of you gets tired too. The one who wins the race does so hy using a few extra ounces of eltort, hut the little added eftort makes all the difference hetween success and failure. Put forth the hest that is in you and you are hound to Win. Fourth, success cannot he attained without sacrilfice. It may mean the giving up of leisure time, the curtailing of recreation, and the putting forth of effort when it seems impossihle to go on, hut the thrill of accomplishment will more than make up for the sacritices you make. Your parents have already denied themselves many pleasures in order to provide for your welfare. Show them your appre- ciation by making good in the game of life. R. WESLEY BURNHAM Q Senior K X QF! The Constitution created a Federal Govem- ment which unites the states of the nation hut leaves provision for the self- determination of each state. The men who wrote the Constitution did so hecause of the growing need for democracy. Vxfehster says, Democracy means the potiticat system in which the government is directty exercised or controlled hy the people cottectivetyf, I say democracy is the feeling of co- operation, loyalty, freedom, and respect for the minority in a group of people. in America the minority have a voice in the government. Not so in Europe. There the dictators win over their people hy the artificial type of patriotism - the glamorous type. The people sing songs and recite poems pertaining to their country, and, in the meantime, the poor unfortunate are heing ted oft to concentration and tahor camps. Xfve have not tried this system here in America. It may he true that ati our people do not know the words ot our national anthem, hut the feeling that is in their hearts shoutd maize up for their tact: of concentration on our patriotic songs. it is true that today Vwfashing- ton is hut a Figure on the two-cent stamp and we are not quite sure whether it was Andy or Stonewall Jackson who defeated the British at New Orleans. AH we realty need at this time is a patriotic renaissance to hring our people hack to the hasic idea ot democracyg to the idea that we must cooperate. For this we must he loyal and we must share our good fortune and our disappointments within our group. Ahove an we must he tolerant of others. XV e must have a patriotism that is ahove reproach. Are we the type who would give our ati for our country or are we among those who stand in puhtic and sing The Star Spangled Bannern and then go out and condemn our national government? Of course, we respect the laws. Nve even give advice to the carrying out of them hut at the same time we whisper, Ml-'ry hard to avoid paying that tax. The government doesnt need it.H if we are ever to have a true democracy, we must icirst learn to appreciate the importance of the minority and the importance of education and retigion. Haaren High School with its wonderful statt ot teachers has tried to do its part in respect to your education. The religion you must acquire yourself. I now appeal to you Seniors-The youth of Americawgave our country for Democ- racy-fGo out in the world and cultivate the characteristics that will make you a true patriot and staunch uphoider of the Constitution.
