From the extremes of victory and defeat to the extremes of laughter and tears, the mass is transformed into one whole, one emotion, one force. Together the whole stands fixed upon one decision and screams it to the top of its lungs— WE ARE THE BULLDOGS—and couldn‘t be prouder. No matter what the sport may be, the fans are there, the crowd is cheering, and the mass is pulling for their team, full of un- controllable excitement and enthusiasm. PoE Dedicated, hard-working, constant. This was our aM football team. The players who devoted them- selves to their school and its students, the athletes who gave their best, the coaches who, through diligent guidance, molded the individual into the whole. And with the competitors there were the spectators who stood in delirious expectation, awaiting the decision of victory or defeat, feeling the strong excitement and the struggle to be vic- torious. All too soon the gridiron was stilled, and our Bulldogs held a 2-8 record. The time, the tre- mendous effort, the sweat, the tears, and the ex- haustion, the overwhelming rapture of victory and the painful injury of defeat, all these were a part of the season. oo ej 2 2413032. .52 52504 6: Oa” B. Even Coach Meek’s last minute instructions could not secure a victory for the Bulldogs. Lower picture, Billy Kilgore tried a quarterback sneak only to be smothered by Jordan interior. Bob McDavid was injured in this initial game and did not see action again until the Willingham game. Seniors: Jeff Bridges, Ed Burdette, John Dupree. Even an inspiring pre-game talk by injured Bob McDavid before the Ram tilt could not reduce the numerous Bulldog mistakes, which allowed the cross-town rivals of Willingham to snare a 25-14 win. Upper right, Willingham quarterback, Wayne Jones, skirts down the sidelines as Mark Smith’s Benjie Edwards closes in for the kill. Lower left, Willingham ace, Alan McCoury, slices through the Bulldog line as Julius Mullis and Mike Fender apply brakes. Daylight-Savings Time catches the Bulldogs’ prayer with a glimmer of light before the game. During half-time Coach Williams diagrams the x’s and o’s of the complicated world of football. Seniors: Mike Fender, Casey Jones, Billy Kilgore. The Bulldogs get their first taste of victory as they down Tift County, 14-6. Kilgore is tripped at the line for a small gain but the bench gives a sign as Edward's boot is true. Seniors: Leslie Kim- berly, Garry McLeod, Bob McDavid. The Bulldogs gallantly try to knock off Colum- bus, the Number One team in Triple A, but fall short in the fourth quarter because of a 21 point outburst by Columbus. The powerful Bulldogs fought on even terms with the Blue Devils but even the strains for extra yards by Kilgore and the urgent directions between the coaches via telephone could not pull the Bulldogs on to vic- tory. The final score, 33-12, favored the Blue Devils. Seniors: J. W. McKinnie, Julius Mullis, Don Odom. It was a special night, distinguished from all others. The crowd was joined together by an intangible quality of expectancy. Al- though the Bulldogs gave their all, the Blue Devils could not be stopped. Feelings of anxiety for the game mingled with feelings of anticipation as half-time approached. As the entire crowd listened anxiously for the long-awaited outcome of weeks of prepar- ation and expectation, Mark Smith proudly crowned its first homecoming queen: Miss Penny Wooten. Upper Left: Miss Mary Anne Berg, First Runner-up. Upper Right: Miss Penny Faircloth, Second Runner-up. “Those river rats are back” was the cry but the Bulldogs’ try for two in a row was doused by cross-town rival, Lanier. Even though the Bull- dogs drew the first blood, the Poets’ razzle-dazzle proved too much for the Dogs, ending the game with 35-21. Upper Right, McKinnie hauls in a pass. Middle right, Kilgore rolls right and finds plenty of running room. Fifteen seniors rounded out their high school career against Moultrie. Wearing all White for the first time ever, on request by the seniors, Mark Smith put on an aerial exhibition but the outcome was indicative of the season, as the Bulldogs lost, 27-13. Middle right, draw play to Dirk Thomas is diagnosed by Moultrie defense. Seniors: Joe Penone, Glenn Shelby, Bill Watson. Basketball The Mark Smith Bullpups proved to be a poten- tial powerhouse of energy by defeating all their opponents save cross-town Lanier. Throwing up a tenacious defense and an abundance of hustle, making up for a height deficiency, the B-Team handed Coach Ben Snipes a fine record for his first season at the helm. Under the guidance of Coach Minton Williams, the Mark Smith eighth graders ended the season with a 9-8 recotd and captured third place in the Mark Smith Eighth Grade Invitational Tourna- ment. i - a WW School spirit as well as a spirit of competition is promoted at Mark Smith through intramural activities. In this year’s Intramural Basketball Tournament, Supervision 201 won the upper divi- sion title while Supervision 103 was tops in the lower division. Wrestling Crippled this season by many injuries, the Mark Smith mat team ended up with a disappointing 2-8 record. Despite this fact, the Bulldogs, coached by Leo Brooks and Bonwell Royal, managed to send six of their wrestlers to the State Tourna- ment. Coach Bobby Brown sets his sight on another outstanding baseball season. Winners of the Lem Clark Tournament for the past two years, the Bulldogs will be going for their third victory this year. The outlook appears successful for the Bull- dogs, returning ten lettermen to the diamond. Team: Lynn Wood, John Skalko, Ricky Churchwell, Billy Kilgore, Frankie Brown, Casey Jones, Donald Willis, Benjie Edwards, Mike Clark, Cam Bonifay, Benny Galyon, William Simpson, Jeff Granade; Manager, Raymond Jerry. Baseball Virtually wiped out by graduation, Coach Bill Meeks knows that hard work and constant practice always produces a winner. Not Pictured: Henry Dohn. en be a re ee Lasseter Physical Education Department HH sililil ath Under the stimulating leadership of the gym instructors, we find the students vigorously en- gaged in systematic exercises, outside games, and refreshing play. The gym is the center of exertion, the center of training and improvement, whether t be physical, intellectual, or moral. The students taught skill and dexterity, as well as the con- cept of good sportsmanship, involving honesty, rivalry, and grateful acceptance of results. of a The girls have their own interpretations in the field of athletics. Any type of action, from drib- bling down the basketball court to sack-racing a soccer field, can always be found in the girls’ physical education department. Learning to draw a bow, as well as to hit the target, can be quite an experience for many of the students, but the greatest moment comes when one has mastered the art of putting on a shin guard. Baseball is another masculine sport that the girls have tried to adopt. Simple actions like throwing he ball, catching the ball, and even hitting the ie tremendous tasks of coordination, a state of being which the instructors have tried to nstill in their pupils. Tennis, a source of invigo rating exercise in otne avc sport of the gir Mi Wy} y, hh iY Ws Cheering is another activity supervised by the gym department. The cheerleaders hold one of the most time- consuming, yet tremendously rewarding, positions con- nected with the school activities. Not only do they lead in cheers and chants during the games but they also perform many other duties besides actual cheering. Their outside time and effort put into painting signs, planning pep rallies, and just plain practicing must be acknowl-- edged in order to give these girls the recognition due to them. They are the motivators of school spirit, a force which can almost cause a victory by itself. VARSITY: Ellen Blum, Wynelle Glendenning, Penny Wooten, Babs Dyche, Marcia Kaney, Marjorie McNair, Jackie Sheppard, Jackie Waters; B-TEAM: Judy Bedingfield, Miki Fluker, Cathy Rice, Cathy Stephens, Delia Harvey, Debs Meeks, Margaret Pendleton, Brenda Pyles; Advisor: Mrs. Beth Brooks. PARTICIPATION The school is divided into specific groups which render specific services and aids to particular persons or things. These are the clubs, the organizations, the individual units formed for the benefit of association with others and for the purpose of serving others. Through these organizations, the students become involved in active participation, and each begins to learn a little more about him- self, about his friends, and about his world. Concern, preparation, and appreciation are the simple, yet complex, by-products of each club’s final output.
