This was the day of the long awaited, much publicized contest between the Bulldogs and their bitterest rivals—the Lanier Poets. In the weeks and, finally, the last days preceeding the game, tension mounted to an almost unbearable level. The bonfire the night before the game concentrated the spirit even more. During the pep rally, when t he Poet was hung in effigy, there was no doubt that the Bulldogs would be victorious on this night. When the final gun sounded, the scoreboard told the tale: It read Mark Smith 35, Lanier 14.
