Arts Today increasing numbers of students are realizing the im- portance of mastering a foreign language. At King High, Latin and Spanish are offered. In Spanish classes, the student learns to read, write, and speak the language. The two years of Latin are devoted to laying the foundation of the language from the standpoint of grammar, and vocabulary. Speech offers an excellent op- portunity for students who are seeking poise and self-assurance in formal speaking. Journalism covers all phases of news writ- ing - news coverage, sports writing, editorial writing, ad- vertising, and creative writing. The English department trains the student to write correctly and concisely, to increase his vocabulary, to appreciate good literature, and to extend his rec- reational reading. Students are introduced to several types of literature dur- ing their three years of high school English. Included in the selections studied in the sopho- more year are Julius Caesar, Silas Mowner, and The King and I. In the junior year Amer- ican literature is emphasized with contemporary writing and non-fiction articles, and the play t'Our Town is especially enjoyed. Included in senior Eng- lish selections are Macbeth, poetry of Browning and Tenny- son, and Pygmalion Pam Skipper and Can- dy Paulk give their rendition of Gen. Wil- liam Booth Enters Heaven. Mathematics Mrs. Corbin explains the proof of a theorem to the class While Cindy West and Gary Bowden practice on problems. Various courses in mathematics are offered at King High to help students make the most of the growing opportunities in this field. Included among these subjects are algebra, trig- onometry, plane and solid geometry, and commercial arithme- tic.
