The blended elements of his genial personality revealed to his World of students, friends, faculty, and family, a man of honor, love, and understand- ing. In his willingness to share him- self with others, he dispensed en- couragement and friendship tinged with good humor and a sincere desire to help. YESTERYEAR IN KING HIGH In 1906, six years after the turn of the century, two years after Kingsville had been founded, the first school in Kings- ville was established. It was a one room, one teacher school with an initial enrollment of thirteen pupils. The school is pictured in the above photo. Rooms have been added, and the building has been remodeled, but a portion of it is the original school. This building on Alice and Third Streets remained the schoolhouse of Kingsville until the fall of 1910, when a new and larger school took its place. This new school was Henrietta M. King High School. Now, after fifty-four years of occupancy by high school students, this King High will also retire to make room for progress. In the fall of 1963 a new high school will take its place. As we anticipate the years ahead in our new school, many of us will also retain fond memories of the good times, as well as, disappointments experienced in King High. Let's look back into the seeds of time to the beginning of Henrietta M. King High School. 5 King High of 1910. Note the fence in fro nt of the school to keep out the livestock. Newlee Hall was built in 1937 for the Music Department. 6 The cornerstone of King High was laid in 1909 after Mrs. Henri- etta lVI. King had donated funds for the construction of the school. In September of 1910 the enrollment had reached 600 in eleven grades, taught by 17 teachers. The first diplomas were awarded in 1913 to a class of three boys. In the same year the school was affiliated with the University which required 15 credits for graduation. In 1925 King High School burned but was replaced in 1926 with funds from insurance and a bond issue. The Home Economics Build- ing on the right was built in 1940. In 1951 Wade Hall, the fi- nal addition to the campus Was completed. It was to be used for the science depart- ment.
