Varsity Cheerleaders Spruce Up Football ames Spruce has had a cheerleading squad since the school first opened in the fall of l964. Although cheerleading has undergone many changes. one function has remained the same: to promote good school spirit. Currently, cheerleaders are selected by a tri-etlmic committee of judges and are required to attend all football games and 75W of other athletic events. Cheerleading is rather expensive since cheerleaders must pay for their own things. However, the district does provide money for paint. paper, and tape for spirit ribbons. According to sponsor Lois Hahnl, in recent years, cheerleading has become a sport. There are more competitions than ever before, and routines have become more difficult. However, uniforms have remained virtually the same. Also the Spruce mascot has become more visible and more involved with stunts and cheers. For the person who learns French, job opportunities are offered in such fields as world trade, travel agencies, and translation services. The study of French is more than learning the language. Students also study the geography of the country, its origins in history, and the culture of French-speaking people. Not all was serious for French Club members. The club had several social events. The library not only contains many interesting books but also has filmstrips, magazines, newspaper, and, as a new addition, a computer for personal reference and entertainment. There are four staff members who can assist students: Barbara Brooks and Marjorie Fielden, librarians, and Marie Jenkins and Billie Phillips, library clerks. There has been one change in the staff, however. There are no longer student workers to help out in the library. Because of this, the librarians sometimes need to call on students from one of the two study halls to assist them. The librarians are very nice people and are always willing and able to assist you in any way possible. The library contains many fic- tional books for your enjoyment. There are approximately four thou- sand two hundred and lifty two fic- tion sclections available. These books include titles by many great authors: H. C. The 1985-86 ,lunior Varsity Basketball Team had to deal with the No-Pass, No-Play Rule. The rule states that any athlete who does not maintain a 70 average in every class cannot participate in any extracur- ricular activity. During this up and down year, the Apaches had many high and low points. The high points were par- ticipating in tournaments all over Dallas County. Low points involved the players who were affected by the No-Pass, No-Play Rule. The ,lunior Varsity Basketball Team is coached by Tom Boyd. The most important reason for Junior Varsity Basketball is to prepare the players for the varsity team. Students are able to purchase a locker for two dollars in their homeroom at the beginning of the school year. In the past you were able to pick the floor of your choice. This year was the first in which students had to buy lockers in homeroom and to share the locker with someone in homeroom. During the year students become attached to their lockers. However, lockers today are different in many ways. They are not just places to put books and coats anymore. Students today use lockers to show off their friends, their favorite stars, and their personal belongings. They use pictures, posters, mirrors, and lots of candy. Students spend a lot of money to decorate and design their lockers. Some students have gone to the extreme of building shelves in their so called Nsecond homesf' Lockers have become a big thing to decorate. During football season lockers are decorated with crepe paper, taped with candy, and stuffed with balloons. People in various organizations decorated the inside of their lockers. The Sundancers, in the past, have decorated the football team,s lockers. Lockers have always been a favorite pasttime during the school day. Students meet their friends and stay after school to talk or discuss school work. Some people share lockers with othersg some students have three to four people in one school locker. School lockers are very special and important to teenagers. Students, lockers are a get-away between classes as well as a reflection of personality and characteristics. 180 IIQIQBQEKQE? HWould she go out with rne?', or. Will he ask me out? One of these questions is on the mind of every high school student. with a few exceptions. Dating not only determines that you are sociable, but also helps you become part of a clique. If you are lucky, you can date a person of an 'gelitcw group and join them. During the first few weeks of school you arc beingjudged. How are you beingjudged? By whom and how often you date. You've got to be careful though! You donit want to date just anyone. You must date someone who is outgoing, good looking, and always popular. However, you don't go looking for a date. You may have a Mperfectw date in mind. but never turn down a good opportunity. Always be ready to ask a new acquaintance out if that person is worth it, and always attempt to make a good impression. First impressions are big in dating. By the first impression, you determine, in the back of your mind, whether or not you would like to go out with a certain person. First impressions are hard to overcome. Don't become so nervous, or so cool, that you make ajerk of yourself: thatis your best bet. In a lot of situations it is 182 ,,,,.,,w,veww - .witty better to date people from outside your school. It would be great to date someone out of school, but that's not very likely. If you date someone outside your school, your friends are most likely to envy you because you're with someone they do not know. You can also increase your social life by meeting people from that person,s school. Dating someone outside your school gives you the opportunity to set your friends up for blind dates. Blind dates can be good or bad. Often the people that were set up will get along better than the people who set them up. Sometimes a date is wrong from the beginning. Now, where do you go to meet new peo- ple? A good place to meet someone is at a shopping mall. You don't need a lot of money, you go only to look. While shopping you have a chance to catch on to new trends and meet interesting people. KK. is another way to meet new peo- ple. You find a street with fast food places and plenty of people and cruise up and down the street. Galloway, Buckner, and Green- ville are the best places around. These two ways work, but the best way to meet people is to go to a club. Now you donit need a fake I.D., you can go to a teen club. Theyirejust as fun as adult night clubs, and there is a sure bet that you will get in. Teen clubs have become more and more popular, and there are quite a few to choose from. A few of the best are Pizzaz, Oz, and Jams. Pizzaz and Jams play a wide range of music but Oz is totally New Wave. This wide variety of music brings in people from dif- ferent schools and backgrounds. That's good when youire looking to meet new people. Now that you have met someone and ask ed that person out, where do you go? You could go back to the place you met, but that doesn't show much interest in the date. Girls want to be made to feel special, so go somewhere new and interesting. Take her to dinner, Mcdonald's does not count! It doesn't have to be the most expen- sive restaurant in town, just nice. If the date is going fine you may want to get a little closer, which can be fun, but if not you should definitely cut it short. How do you do this without hurting the other's feelings? Excuses! Now the only trouble is choosing the right one. HI have to be home early because relatives are in from out of townw works, but it is questionable. One that will always work is, NI have to get home and take care of my sick motherf, Now that you know what to do and how to do it, you can try to find a date. Who knows, you may get lucky and get one! When a person is absent from school, the parent must write a note telling why the child was absent. ln most cases, instead of explaining the details, they just say the child was sick whether it was true or not. Maybe a little creativity would be helpful in such situations. For example: '4Please excuse Joe. He was absent because his grandmotheris sisterls step- mother's aunt's dog suddenly developed dandrufff, They could even say something like: 'flane was not at school because her feet were sore from walking on waterf, Something like that would drive the people in the attendance office crazy. Fashion Repeats I tsebf Student Styles Reflect Tastes, Various Eras The fashion world repeats itself. Todayis fashion resembles that ofthe past. Many ofthe clothes we wear today were worn by our parents and grandparents years ago. The latest fashion styles go as far back as the Hflolden 2Ois.,i Some date from as recently as the 'fHopping 50,57 For instance, in the l920,s, ankle-length skirts were quite popular. Similar skirts of that style are now in demand. During those days, dresses with big bows tied just below the hips were a common sight. Many accessories of the twenties are now commonly used. For example, long string beads and strapped pumps have made a comeback among todayis fashions. Along with the style of the twenties, the styles ofthe fifties can be seen. Pedal Pushers, known now as ankle or short pants, are a must for a girl's wardrobe. The large, baggy shirts, worn by girls and guys alike, originated in the fifties. Accessories of the fifties that have made a comeback include bobbysocks, white canvas tennis shoes, hair ties, red lipstick, and pumps. Along the line of fashionable hairstyles, bobs and short cuts have returned. Certain fashions have been practically everlasting. These are ones that seem to have been around forever. lVlini skirts are a perfect example. They have endured from the twenties through the eighties. Levis button-fly jeans have stuck with the mini skirts all the way. Who knows?
