PLANT 1-HGH SCHOOL TAMPA, FLORIDA 1953 FOREWQRD It is with much pleasure that we, the Annual Staff of 1953, present to the student body the 1953 Silver Anniversary Panther. We have labored long and diligently in compiling this annual, and yet we cannot help but feel that our labors have been amply rewarded as we survey the result of all our work - - - the Silver Anniversary Panther. In the years to come, if one person shall derive pleasure from looking once again at his classmates of old, then surely our labors shall not have been in vain. If, in the distant future, one forgotten friendship, be renewed through glancing at the pages of this annual, then, too, our efforts will have been generously rewarded. We present the 1953 Panther, then, with our most sincere hopes that it will be a continual source of pleasure both now and in the many years to come - - - both now, and then. We feel it only fitting to attribute her with a long overdue debt of gratitude and the sincerest appreciation from the bottom of our hearts. Mein'- 1371? MATTlE,, EDDINGTON uw WK? Now, as we are pre- paring to leave, we begin to realize more than ever the great responsibility that faces us in the world, and we are thankful to Plant for equip- ping us with the experience and training neces- sary to meet it. During our years at Plant many new policies were introduced, tried, and proven successful. In our junior year we put on the first annual junior-Senior Prom, in which the junior Class honored the Seniors by being the arrangers, planners, and hosts for the big affair. The first Panther Prowl was introduced in our Junior year to replace the traditional bon- fire before the Thanksgiving game. In our Senior year our well-organized class went all out to help meet the expense of our Senior Banquet in a movement which became the first Senior Work Day. The most jubilant of the events in our three years happened in our Senior year when Plant defeated Hillsborough in the annual Thanks- giving game . . . a victory which had been dreamed of and worked for for eight years. For this victory we are proud of both the wonderful team and the outstanding spirit of the student body as it cheered them to win. We are proud of the number who have been recognized for their outstanding qualities by being admitted to the membership of the Na- tional Honor Society, I Dare You, and Gold and Black. In our three years we have proved our worth in all phases of high school activities. The wonderful plays our dramatic department presented, the improvements in the record of our athletic teams, the outstanding perform- ances of our chorus and band, the fine slate of activities sponsored by our various school clubs, and the better organization of our student gov- ernment show our progress in various fields. We have added a few of our members to Plant's list of immortals, and we feel that as time goes by, more members of our class will undertake to participate in the activities which we sin- cerely hope will bring honor upon our school. As our Junior year has progressed we have received a great many more responsibilities, and it is our hope that we have been able to carry them out as well and as faithfully as our prede- cessors did. This year, which once seemed so long and Ron FIE Los Vive Prvsirfzfrzt hard to us, has passed on, and placed its name in the annals of Plant High School. As the years go by, there will always be the happiest of memories for all those wonderful times we spent during our Junior year at Plant. MRS. For many of us this was our second year at Plant, as last year We were privileged to be the first Freshman class ever to attend Plant High. We learned the ways of Plant in that short year and were well able to meet our Sophomore year. We have been well represented in all the activities open to Sopho- mores. We have tried to prove ourselves worthy of the opportunities which have met us this year. We volunteered our services and en- thusiastically devoted our time to promoting our school activities. We introduced, planned, and made successful the first Plant High Color Day. We have played a big part in the ever increasing school spirit at athletic events. We ho e we've done our 'ob well. Lorraine Sewell I I Y-TEE Y-Teens is the teen-age division of the Y.Wf.C.A., a vast organization. The Y-Teens, the largest club in the school, is one of the most active groups in Plant. This is the only club in school open to all girls wishing to serve their school and community. The school advisor is Mrs. Aurora Lloyd and the Y.W.C.A. Teen-Age Director is Miss Louetta Riley. The club upholds the principles of loyalty, truthfulness, and consideration, and it carries on Christian work by supplying needy families with food and clothing especially during Thanksgiving and Christmas Seasons. Much time and preparation is spent in planning the three religious programs which the Y-Teens present for the student body at Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter. The Y- Teens and the Glee Club presented candlelight tableaus for the Thanksgiving Program, and Alice Ann Forman, a Hillsborough graduate, gave the story of the Littlest Angel at Christmas. The Y-Teens' three-fold program is based on the Y.W.C.A. triangle. The three Sides which are equally stressed represent service, social, and re- ligion. The club participates in many city-wide and national projects. Service projects included sending chocolate bars to Europe, collecting money for the T.B. Drive and for the Community Chest N CLUB Operation Porchlight. Members sold tickets for the P.T.A. Spaghetti Dinner. During the first semester, the Y-Teens sponsored the Barn and Sock Dance in the gym and the Toy Dance at Christmas to get toys for needy families. At most meetings there is a planned program, sometimes an outside speaker, a discussion or movie. At one meeting the club had a panel dis- cussion on Boy-Girl Relations in which several boys participated. The Y-Teen skit took third place in Panther Prowl. Each summer, the club sends delegates to the Southeastern Tri-State Convention. orfrlceks Pr1'xiJf'nt ------- ANITA ANDERSON Vice President ------- MARQIE HILL Recording Sffrrefnry - - - NIAKY ANNE SNEAD Corresponding Secrrfary - - - Sgi. at Arms ----- Chaplain ----- Service Chairman - Sociul Cbairmun - - - Program Chairman - - Sponsor ---- Treasurer - - - - PATT1 Wniuns - - LIUDY Pont - CARoL C1oLL1Ns - NANCY Peiuicia SANDY NVRIGHT - ,FALLULAH BRUWN - MRS. DRAMATIC CLUB The Dramatic Club membership is open to any- one who is interested in dramatics and offers numerous opportunities in connection with play- work. It encourages members and gives them a chance to show their talent and acting ability. Some members participate in plays while others work on backstage crews. To gain membership in the National Thespians, a higher branch of the Dramatic Club, members must earn points. This may be done by being a member of a property crew, or understudying a part, or by being in a play either for the club or an assembly program. The Dramatic Club contributed to the fund to send Plant representatives to the Florida High School Speech Festival in Gainesville. Represent- ing Plant were juniors: Patsy Maddox, in the poetry reading division, and Tupper Saussy, par- ticipating in the radio audition. Joyce Schonbrun, 89 In a senior, entered in the Prose Reading division. These students made a fine representation for Plant. The production of several plays offered oppor- tunities in every field of stagework, Student direc- tion, acting, and stage setting. Several members participated in the Thespian assembly programs. 0lfIflCliRS Presirlmzl - - - BURRS HAMNER Vice Prexidenl - - BUNNY HARRIS Sz'r1'z'fary - - MADELIZINE Lock Treatzzrvr - ---- JUDY C1.ARK Sponsors - - MRS. They devote much time rendering every service possible to the Physical lid, and Athletic Depart- ment. Their main goal is to promote greater school spirit. The credit for the posters, the signs in the lunchroom, and the other game publicity goes to the Pantherettes. They decorated the goal posts be- fore each game and decorated all the special trains. They served as Usherettes at the football games. Another project was selling food at the Snack Bar on train trips. Before the Thanksgiving Game they decorated each playerys chair in his classrooms. The football season was ended with a banquet for the football players. The Pantherettes decorated the tables and served the guests. At Christmas, the club filled .1 barliet for .1 needy family. They purchased a ham lor the basket with the tive dollars won by selling the most tickets to the P.T.A. Spaghetti Dinner. They are: The Soph- omore Chorus and the ,lunior-Senior Chorus, resulting in an exceptionally large combined group of approximately 80 singers. They spend an hour daily on intensive vocal training. A great amount of standard vocal literature is studied and rehearsed for perfection of tone, blend, quality, balance and interpretation. linrollrnent in the chorus is based on a desire to sing, previous choral training and a willingness to display the singing voice at its best, although outstanding vocal quality is unnecessary. The chorus has done much to encourage the love of music and to develop musical talent which may be found in Plant students. +4 IUS lie The Chorus is always willing to participate in any civic or social program. lt is considered an obligation and privilege to appear on programs offered here in our auditorium. Each year they participate in the religious services given by the Y-Teens. This year gold choral robes with black stoles have been purchased by interested Organizations. For the last two ears the Chorus has erformed Y P at the half time of the Turke Da fame. This Y Y E year the new robes were worn. Founded in 1939 it is mainly a service club although it does encourage the social fellowship of its mem- bers. The Key Club is sponsored by the Ki- wanis Club. The club encourages better citizen- ship among high school boys, and has done much to help the school and faculty. The Key Club is continuously trying to uphold the Kiwanis motto: We Build. The Plant Key and Kiwanette Clubs joined their brother clubs from Hillsborough for a semi-formal Turkey Day Dance on the night of the Thanksgiving Game in an effort to further the friendly relationship between the two schools. This is the second annual dance. The Key Club sent 9 boys to the Florida Key Club convention held in Lakeland Dec. 12 and 13. Burks I-Iamner, a senior, took top honors in the oratorical contest. Freedom, Our Sacred Trustl' was the topic of the contest speeches. Burks will represent the Florida Key Clubs at the International Convention in Los Angeles during the summer. Among this year's projects were: distribut- ing 150 posters for the Tampa Philharmonic Orchestra. During the Christmas season they sold wrapping paper, seals, and Christmas Cards. WE BEAT HILLSBCROUGI-I Yes, we did! This fighting Panther team did what others have failed to do during the last eight years. The charges of Coach Frank Lorenzo started the season by bowing to Jefferson in a heartbreaker, 0-6. Then came Sarasota and a 19-0 victory for the Panthers. Brooksville was our next victim, 39-12. The powerful jackson Tigers gave Plant their second defeat, 7-34. The following game gave Plant their first Big Ten win since 1950 by outscoring Boone 26-20. A defeat at the hands of the Green Devils, 41-7, gave Plant defeat number three. Two more defeats plagued the Panthers: Edgewater outscored the Panthers 26-13, and Lakeland defeated them 3-1-12. Then the tide turned and this fighting team bounced back to win their second Big Ten victory over a strong Landon team, 13-12. Next came the Big Turkey Day Game, at which our Panthers 119 E+ showed their true fighting spirit by coming from behind at halftime to defeat the Hillsborough Terriers 20-13 for Big Ten victory number three. This made their first inter-city win since 1947. Thus this team ended the season with a Eve won and lost record and three Big Ten wins for the best record that a Plant team has made since 1947. The boys gathering the honors for this team were: Bill Shields, All-American squad, All- Southern, All-State, All-City Captain, Ruben Espinola, Jim Singletary, Vibert Griflith, Benny Menendez, Arnold Scudder, and Elston Candileri, who were nominated to the All-City team. This made the largest number of Plant players ever to be selected to an All-City team. This team many observers believe has laid the foundation for the rise of Plant football teams to a place of prominence. Lord Cfhambtrlain-liurks Hamner. THE ROYAL COURT Long live the King of Pantherilla and luis Royal Queen! The Year of our Lord MCMLIII ushered in our noble King Dennis of th: Hous: of West and our vivacious Queen Connie of the House of Felicione. They, with their royal court, will reign for a year over us, their loyal subjects, gallant knights, and lovely ladies of the Kingdom of Pantherilla, situated in the heart of Plant in Palma Ceia. Since the Year of our Lord MCMXXVIII, we have been ruled by twenty-five powerful sovereigns and their Queens who have bound us to themselves by their gracious and royal authority. This year being our twenty-fifth year and Silver Anniversary celebration, we had the privilege and honor of having with us the very first King Robert of the House of Giliam and Queen Becky of the House of Price. How well they brought back the wonderful tradition of the very first Pantherilla! As they abdicated the throne to our new rulers, we will remember the significance of having them with us this year. The noble King and Queen are chosen by the Senior Class in the spring of every year by popular vote. The royal members of the Court, known as courtiers, maids, and witnesses, are elected from the Sophomore, Llunior, and Senior classes. The entire kingdom is kept in suspense until the night of the grand coronation when the Lord Cham- berlain proclaims the long-awaited announcement of the new rulers. After the pomp and ceremony at the coronation, it is the custom for the royal court to extend an invi- tation to all to attend the King's Ball, which marks the end of the beautiful ceremony. This year the ball honoring the King and Queen was held once again in X Plant's own Gymnasium, decorated to perfection by Mk. 8 MM, R0,,,,,.,. G,HA,m their Majesties' loyal subjects. lit King Qim-ii 1 IW lf This year's Pantherilla will long be remembered by the Plant High students, for not only was the Court well-chosen, but the dance that followed the Corona- tion Was very impressive. The gymnasium, which was beautifully decorated in the true spirit of a Silver Anniversary, pro- vided a perfect background for the hand- somely dressed couples. The entire eve- ning was characterized by laughter and gaiety. The satisfaction and pride present on each person's face were evidence of the fact that everyone attending the dance had a Wonderful evening. Contributing most to the feeling of pride was the knowl- edge that students themselves had made all the preparations and done all the decorating for the colorful celebration. +31 -40 K..
