JEAN VEAL Lunch Room Manager QHIOFR A WJ HISTORY OF THE JANUARY SENIOR CLASS The time has come to bid our school a fond farewell. As we members of the graduating class of 1948 stand at the parting of our ways, we stop to take one last look at the path we have so proudly trod together. In the dim distance we see ourselves as we walked for the first time through the halls of Plant as midgets in a world of intellectual giants. We see ourselves as hideous little girls--with stringy hair, pale cheeks, and colorless lips, followed by bashful boys with flying shirts and close cropped hair! We were truly at the mercy of the sophisticated upper class- men, who required that we learn the rules and regula- tions, which Plant students hold so dear. We watch ourselves as gradually recov- ering from our total be- wilderment, we take our places in the academic, ath- letic, and social activities of our school. Some of our suc- cess seems to have resulted from our choice of officers, for in Home Room 107, Doyle Waldrop was chosen as President, Catherine O'Terra, Vice-President, and Betty Phillips as Treasurer, while in Room 105, Grace Benham, Tom Allen and Marjorie Bourne filled these ofhces. And now we catch a nearer view of ourselves as we seem to be sitting on top of the world, no longer little Sophomores, but strutting Juniors, masters of such things as home work, exams and admit slips, taking active part in Assembly pro- grams as well as lunch room capers. The thrills of our first season of football are well worth the ruined throats, which are beginning to recover when again we lose our voices at the basketball games. However, this does not prevent us from passing our final exams and we gladly leave our Junior year. Is it possible that we have become dignified WALTER BALDWIN ----- President TRULA STEVENS ---- Virf'-President MARJORIE BOURNE ----- Set'l't'tdry Seniors? Here we are and justly proud of our at- tainments. Since home rooms 107 and 105 have joined together as one large graduating class in room 102, we have loads of fun with Walter Baldwin as President, Trula Stevens, Vice-President and Marjorie Bourne, Secretary. From our numbers have been chosen worthy members of the many extra curricular activities to be found on the campus. We are ably represented in the Student's Council, President's Cabinet, National Honor Society, The Order of the Gold and Black, I Dare You, Thespians, Key Club, Letterman's Club, G.O.C., Kiwanettes, Youth for Christ, the Camera' and the Science Clubs. We have important positions on the staffs of the Pep O' Plant, our school paper, and the Panther, our annual. Each year our class has chosen maids, courtiers and court witnesses, and this year Grace Benham, Walter Baldwin, Marjorie Bourne and Tom Allen graced the Royal Court of Pantherilla. Walter Whitehead and Wal- ter Baldwin were our ath- letic stars and led us to many victories. Tom Allen was elected to represent the school as Junior Ro- tarian, Earl Smith was chosen Junior Lion, while George Menendez and Marjorie Bourne have served well as Cheerleaders. Our R.O.T.C. officers were Tom Allen, Howard Levester, George Galvin, Bobby Carastro and George Menendez. Marjo-rie Bourne and Grace Benham were chosen as their sponsors. Bobby Gonzalez and Florine Fleishman represented us in the Band. And now our final backward look has been taken, and with hearts filled with affection for our faculty and for our other friends-whom we leave behind, we say Farewell, and proudly take our places among the Alumni of Plant High School. 4Efl2,5 ACHESON, VIRGINIA ANN Gin nh , .tfiv .to qiiief limi ifemiirr? 'll 17 ll HISTORY OF THE JUNE SENIOR CLASS The month of June, 1948, sees another class ending its high school days. Plant has given us many wonderful memories to carry with us through life and we sincerely hope that we have served her well. The National Honor Society, the members of which are chosen for scholarship, leadership, character, and service claimed Anne Ansley, Ann Bryan, Andy Duncan, Martha Metz- ger, Laura Mickler, Virginia Milian, Mary Jane Murray, Jeanne Moreau, Regina Waterman, Hilda Parado, Richard Flood, Dominic Roccaforte, Vernon Ellis, Bill Abbott, Caryl Grant, Sylvia Erick- son, Barbara Cross, Janet Kriekbaum, Betty Gregory, Betty Middleton, Jane Freel, Dorothy Bevis, Laeta Went- worth, Susan Pinksto-n, Elmira Vogtman, Marian Connelly, Audrey Doll, Mary Eleanor Tidwell, and Vir- ginia Hawes. During our Senior B term, Bill Abbott and Phil Perkins served as President and Vice- President, respectively, of the student body. Phil pre- sided as president of the Southern Association of Student Governments Convention in Cosrpus Christi, Texas this year. We feel that student government is a very important phase of our education. Those who made all A's and thus became members of the I Dare You Club are: Ann Bryan, Martha Metzger, Jeanne Moreau, Mary Jane Mur- ray, Ann McCranie, Nancy Wilkes, Betty Gregory, Anne Ansley, Susan Pinkston, Laura Mickler, Andy Duncan, Helen Maddox, Laeta Wentworth, and Jane Freel. In the fallof '47, Mary Jane Murray was chosen to edit the Pep O, Plant. Other members of the staff were Jeanne Flynn, Jan Stayer, Mary Jim Pickard, Betty Middleton, Joy Marley, Isabel Lord, and Betty Cobb. Not only did we develop character, but we also leaned toward physical fitness with Walter Con- rad, Bill Abbott, Bob Richardson, Harry Herring- ton, Russell Hartley, John Lynn, Genaro Huerta, Frank Hunt, Bob Hewlett, and Bryce Terrell lead- ing the gridiron list. The following students showed their leadership as they became presidents of various organizations: TOMMY KOULOURIS ----- President VERNON ELLIS ----- Vice-President ANN BRYAN - - - - - - Srfrefury Martha Metzger, president of Thespians and I Dare You, Mary Jane Murray, president of Y-Teens, Phil Perkins and Vernon Ellis, presidents of the Honor Society, Laura Mickler, president of the J.A.C.g Betty Middleton, president of the Literary Club, and David McLean, president of the Camera Club and also president of the Junior Academy of Science, for the State of Florida. One of the outstanding honors a school can bestow upon a student was received by Russell Hartley, when he was appointed Cadbt Lt. Colonel of the R.O.T.C. Entrance in the Gold and Black is made possible by collecting over 400 points gathered through various activities, Andy Duncan, David McLean, Ann Bryan, Phil Perkins, Mary Jane Murray, Paul Game, Nancy Wilkes, Barbara Cross, Laeta Wentworth, Laura Mickler, Audrey Doll, Frances Bixler, Jeanne Moreau, Betty Mid- dleton, ,Martha Metzger, Jim Kennedy, and Helen Holmes are those who earned points for membership. Joan Merrin was appoint- ed director of the new art staff and Virginia Hawes represented the art department on the President's Cabinet. Senior members of the staff are: Rosanne Loy, Pete Roddenberry, Ray Royster, Mary Eleanor Tidwell, Deana Casey, Ora Kate Cannon, Lester Coons, Edith Davis, Betty Jo Batton, Bill Peters, Luke Turbeville, Carol Farie, Mary Jim Pickard, Jean Almond, and June Tisoin. Ann Bryan was chosen to edit our 1948 Panther with the following staff to assist her: Andy Dun- can, Ann Hawkins, Virginia Acheson, Helen Holmes, Bobby Singleton, Regina Waterman, Elmira Vogtmann, Laura Mickler, Marjorie Moritz, Dorothy Bevis, Trula Stevens, Walter Whitehead, Bob Hewlett, Libby Cloeman, Suzanne Lowry, Paul Game, Jean Lewis, Laeta Wentworth, Russell Hartley, Audrey Anderson, Barbara Cross, Ann Hunnicut, and Helen Maddox. Our high school days at Plant are now con- cluded and we realize that our affection for her will always be great. We look into the future, feeling better equipped to meet it because we have been students here. We will always carry a part of her in our hearts, earnestly hoping that she will carry our memory in hers. -'SIISIYF ABBOTT, WILLIAM BENJAMIN Bill Bruiu,r, lmruw izml lirrsoriiilify not nluuiys are fombinml, So .III flu' more if lilvaxvs ll'bl'VI all in' om' we flllflf' ALLISON, REID ADOLPHS I u'01ililr1'f run awmml lln' l'0Vll!'l' I0 sei' ilu' zvorlil blow Mfr. During our two and a half years of faithfully serving our Alma Mater, we have made outstanding progress. We are proudly represented in the National Honor Society by Linnore Olsen, Bob Tait, and Frank Carter. Linnore is also a cheerleader, a member of the I Dare You Club, and the Gold and Black. Suzanne Davis is an active member of the all A club, the I Dare You. When Louis Caro was a sophomore he became a member of the varsity basketball squad. This year he was also active in football and was ap- pointed alternate captain of next year's team. Thus our class history ends, with each one of us eager to maintain the standards set by preceding members of the Senior class. 4il42P+ Lvl! In Rigflf, Row I-B. Schroeder. M. l.. Huqnsby, H. STUDENT COUNCIL The purposes of the Student Council, the legis- lative branch of the student body, are to encourage participation in the administration of student affairs and to promote the general welfare of stu- dents in Plant High School. Each homeroom elects one representative, who brings suggestions from his homeroom before the council and returns with its decision. At least once every six weeks a regular meeting is held, but special meetings may be called by the President of the student body, the presiding officer or by re- quest of a majority of the representatives. Althofugh passing regulations for the govern- ment of the school is the major function of the organization, the group also confirms the appoint- ments of the President and may impeach any officer. Phil Perkins served as President during the fall term and appointed Linnore Olsen, Secretary. A faculty representative, Mrs. Lorraine Sewell, and the principal offer full support and cooperation, but have power to veto when necessary to pro- mote the general welfare. +34 S4 R+ i 5 ,Q 'Yfiix Luft lo Rigb!-D. This club has a Hve point pro- gram: co-operation, dependability, initiative, lea- dership, and service. The chief objective of the club is service to the school. Other things being equal, the officers and members of the Gold and Black are selected on the basis of service rendered to the school. Among other things this club has in the past two years installed an electric drinking fountain and a plaque with the names of our war dead and has equipped an audio-visual room. This year the project of the club is to lay a concrete walk be- tween the school building and the gymnasium. The members are Dolly Albok, Grace Benhnm, Frances Bixler, Marjorie Bourne, Barbara Cross, Audry Doll, Paul Game, Helen Holmes, Jim Ken- nedy, Martha Metzger, Laura Mickler, Betty Mid- dleton, Jean Moreau, Linnore Olsen, Laeta Went- worth, and Nancy Wilkes. The group dares you to reach these standards. At the beginning of the year a tCzl was held at the home of Miss Myrtle Gilliland, the club spon- sor, to recognize new members. In November the I Dare You club was in- vited to a dress rehearsal of the Little Theatre pro- duction, Ten Little Indians. HISTORY Entering into its fourth year as a chartered club of Plant High School, the Girls' Officers Club still is maintaining its guiding course in all physical education classes. Captains and Lieutenants of all periods are eligible for membership. Piloted by Mrs. Julia Lane, head of the physical education de- partment, the club has grown into an aggregation esteemed for its dependability, sportsmanship, and leadership. Each year the G.O.C. undertakes many worth- while projects for the betterment of the school and a congenial atmosphere among the girls. Each Thanksgiving the members are expected to par- ticipate in the Drill Squad which, this year, was composed of two hundred ten gold and black clad fems who put on a fine exhibition of precision drill headed by Marilyn Nava and Joanne Young. Annually a corps of program-sellers is organized from members of the G.O.C. These girls do an efficient job of selling football programs at all Plant games played in Tampa. Very often this club is called upon to provide entertainment for P.T.A. meetings. Each year a spaghetti dinner is prepared and zealously devoured by members- funds coming from dues paid through the year. Every activity, in or out of school, is looked for- ward to with enthusiasm by all girls. Mrs. Lane's good-natured guidance and ever- present patience and discretion are continually fashioning the girls of Plant High School, the women of tomorrow, into respectful, ambitious, and tolerant citizens. Y-TEENS The Y-Teens have participated in many activ- ities during the year under the guidance of Mrs. Opal Dudney, sponsor, and Miss Ann Bellows, Y-Teen secretary. The year began with a Tri- City conference held with other Tampa Y-Teens, St. Petersburg, and Clearwater at Camp Ma-Wi- An. At that time the future projects of the or- ganization were discussed. Plant's membership drive began with the annual tea to introduce the ideals of the club to new students. Later in the year a joint mother-daughter tea was held at the Y.W.C.A. to give the girls and their mothers a chance to visit the HY. The programs of the year were highlighted by guest speakers and a fashion show. The latter was presented by club members. Three main projects were the Big Sister idea to introduce new girls at Plantg the booth at the Y.W.C.A. bazaar at which Switzerland was repre- sented, and the annual Christmas pageant. The theme for the programs at the regular club meet- ings was self-improvement. CAMERA CLUB One of the outstanding clubs in Plant High School is the Camera Club. This club is composed of thirty students who wish to further their in- terest in photography. In order to obtain the best pictures possible for the State Fair Exhibit, a series of interclub con- tests were held. These contests instigated a rivalry among the club members. Last year the Camera Club made a trip to Bok Tower and Cypress Gardens. This year it planned an excursion to the Marineland Studios in St. Augustine. QUILL AND SCRQLL To the thousands of student journalists serving on yearbooks and newspapers, high school jour- nalism is no mere educational fad or frillf, but a highly fascinating intellectual adventure. S0 broad is the appeal of journalism that it is estimated that the field comprises forty thousand publica- tions of various types and classes. From the interest of such journalistic matters, an organization The Honorary journalistic So- ciety,' or the Quill and Scroll, was formed in 1926. The purpose of the Society is to encourage and reward individual achievement in journalism. The Society has always taken an active part in rais- ing standards in its field and in directing the course in high school journalism. 'Hilfe All members of the Quill and Scroll must be chosen from the students enrolled in high school. They must be at least juniors in standing and in the upper third of their class in scholarship. It is also required that they have done superior work in some phase of journalism. After the candidates are approved by the advisor, some of their work is sent to the international officers to be approved by the executive secretary. The members of the Quill and Scroll are recom- mended by the advisor, Miss Terry Gil. Members from The Panther' staff who are recommended by Miss Ruth Gilliland, annual sponsor, are eligible for membership. Initiation of new members is held once each year during the latter part of the spring semester. Lffl fo Rigbl-P. Perkins, M. Metzger, P. Harwood, Mrs. Haynes, A. Duncan. Noi in picture-C. Carter, H. THESPIANS The highest dramatic honor which a Plant stu- dent can receive is to be chosen as a member of the National Thespian Society. Membership in the Plant Chapter Number 321 is based on a credit system, as points are given for participation in plays, assemblies, and other dramatic programs. A branch of a national organization, the Thes- pian aim is to create an active interest in dramatics among boys and girls in high school and to stress participation in drama-tics as the means of teaching students the standard of evaluation and apprecia- tion of the theatre, radio, and screen. Founded in 1920 at Fairmont State College, the National Thespian Dramatic Honor Society now has 837 chapters. The club motto is Act well your part, there the honor lies. Membership in the Thespians places upon the students the obligation of performing even greater work. To give pupils a chance to earn points towards membership, the Thespians helped in the sponsor- ing of a series of classes on theatrical work. This fall an old fashioned one act melodrama, Timerous Tommy and Bad Bill, was presented in assembly by the officers of the club. Make-up classes, conducted by Bob Puckett, showed the correct method of applying grease paint, while various methods and uses of lighting were presented by Andy Duncan and Phil Perkins. Several plays, directed by the students themselves, offered opportunities in every field of stage work. The productions presented by the Dramatic Club this year were for the benefit of members and others interested, and were held after school. CHEER The Cheerleaders for the year 1947-1948 were truly veterans at the art, since all but three of them had seen two or three years of experience as leaders. The Junior and Senior members were elected by the student body in the spring of '47, while the lucky Sophomores were selected by a committee in the fall. For the first time in the history of Plant there were twins on the cheering squad and the students are justly proud of their Dolly and Polly. Following the practice which was initiated last year, Grace Benham was appointed manager and Martha Bowen was appointed head cheerleader. These two helped the sponsor in planning and con- ducting all pep rallies, supervising practice periods, LE ADERS group. In addition to their regular schedule, the group gave a supper for the Cheerleaders of Hills- borough High and sponsored a very successful dance. They also decorated goal posts for several games. They were especially proud of their work at the Thanksgiving Day game when Phillips Field showed the results of their artistry which justified the many compliments heard on every hand. Letters earned by the Cheerleaders were awarded at an assembly program at the same time that physical education awards were made. Mr. Williani Lucka, Dirrrfor of Music THE PLANT BAND The Plant High School Band started off its yearis activities with the usual run of football game half-time performances. A great deal of time and intensive effort were given to marching drill and field maneuvering each week, from the beginning of school to the end of the grid season. Each band- member has expressed his loyalty and cooperation in the attempt to give Plant High School a musical organization of which it can be justly proud. P.T.A. programs, concerts, parades, reviews and assemblies all marked the number of appearances made this year. New instruments, uniforms, and equipment which have been added since September have greatly smartened the appearance and sound of the band. At the District Band Context, always a mo- mentous occasion for Panther musicians, first places were won by almost every entry, including our twirlers, who ranked with the best of them. The meeting at Miami in April was the highlight of the year when all district winners competed for state honors. +378 he . 'f Lvff In Right, Row I-M. Milner, P. Dolan, M. Killars, M. L. Somerby, B. THE GIRLS' CHORUS The Plant High School Girls' Chorus, a regularly scheduled class, meets during the third period each day of the week for an hour's intensive vocal train- ing. A great amount of standard vocal literature is studied and rehearsed for perfection of tone, blend, balance and interpretation. Enrollment into the chorus is based on a desire to sing, previous choral training and a willingness to display the singing voice at its best, although outstanding vocal quality is unnecessary. -t 79,-5 The Chorus began its work at the opening of the school year with twenty members and will close in June with nearly sixty. The interest in group singing invariably rises to meet the need of the individual expression and this year was no ex- ception to this well-founded rule. This group has been called upon at numerous occasions to furnish entertainment at service clubs and civic organizations of Tampa as well as Al number of churches throughout the city. The purpose of the organiza- tion is to eliminate congestion in the halls and to better sanitary conditions in the lunchroom, halls, and on the school grounds. Appointed by the president of the student body with the approval of the principal and the sponsor, the head monitor is responsible for appointing members cif his committee. Head monitor for both semesters this year was Walter Grahn, with Jack McGregor serving as his assistant. It is the duty of the lunchroom monitors to keep students from leaving the lunchroom with food and also from leaving trays and trash on the tables. Traffic monitors eliminate congestion and running in the halls and unnecessary disturbance of classes. Ground monitors are commissioned to keep stu- dents from leaving the school grounds during lunch hours. In the lunchroom are student cafeteria helpers under the direction of Mrs. Veal, manager of the Cafeteria-. Cafeteria helpers receive free lunches in payment for their services as food servers, cashiers, and table-cleaners. This organization has done much to lighten the work of the adult cafeteria employees. -SHOE' Left lo Right, Row 1-H. Ensminger, S. Moreau, S. Shaffer, T. Liana, N. Giddens. Row 2-L. Dumas, C. THE HISTORY OF PLANT'S DRIVING CLASSES When the need was recognized for high school driver training, a new course was included in the curriculum of Hillsborough County. If in the teen-age group, at the beginning of their driving careers, there can be developed proper attitudes with resulting safer driving habits, then a great step will have been accomplished toward reducing traihc accidents. In September' two driving classes were organ- ized by Mrs. Julia Lane. A shiny new car and other devices were provided for our study and testing. After studying our text books, Sports- manlike Driving, we outlined each chapter and took weekly standardized tests. -.Is1I:a+ Along with our regular class and behind the wheel trainin , we observed traffic and edestrian g P habits. We also took a trip to Trafhc Court, and got some first hand information about the penalties one a s when he is not a courteous, cautious and P Y law-abidin driver. Then we went to the Fcrman S Chevrolet Company, where we were given some information about our car by a professional me- chanic. Our written tests plus our driving knowledge were suitably rewarded, when at the end of the Semester we each received an Operator's License. The course proved to be very interesting, and, under the guidance of Mrs. Lane, we all enjoyed it! Left to Right, Row 1-W. Flowers, P. Boring, L. Siler, T. Brooks, J. Hutchings, P. Myers, H. Since then it has increased in membership and interest. The Plant Chapter is a high school branch of Tampa Youth for Christ which in turn is a branch of the Youth for Christ International. The whole organization, including Saturday rallies, is conducted on a strict interdenominational basis and no controversial doctrines are taught. Both the club and city or- ganization seek to cooperate with all churches. Membership in this club is open to anyone. The purpose of the Youth for Christ club is two- fold. First, it will seek to win to Jesus Christ those who do not know Him as their personal Savior, urg- ing them to make a public profession of their faith and to affiliate themselves with some church. Second it will endeavor to enrich the spiritual life of Christian young people and thus prepare them for a more fruitful service in their own church. Rallies to further this purpose are held every Saturday night at the First Baptist Church. Atten- dance contests among schools are held frequently and a trophy or a banner is awarded to the win- ner. Everyone is invited to attend these rallies. The show took the place of the school exhibits of former liairs. The students spent two months in making, dressing .1nd stringing the twentyffour puppets which were used in the show. They modeled the heads in clay and m.1de casts of Plaster of Paris. They dressed the puppets to represent such eharaeters as .1 farmer, Ll colored boy. .1 pirate, .1 laborer, l.ittle Abner, and Miss New Look. All of the students took part in dressing the puppets, for the girls were glad to give il helping hand to any boy who w.1s not skillful with .1 needle. The team was in- spired to put up a stiff ight in every game it played by Head Coach Jimmie Hughes and Assist- ant Coaches Perry Ruby, Mike Ruggles, and Bobby Sherrill. The team won its five victories over Julia Lan- don of Jacksonville, Jesuit of Tampa, St. Peters- burg High, Tarpon Springs High and Lakeland High. They lost the four games to Andrew Jack- son of Jacksonville, Orlando High, Jefferson High, and to Hillsborough High on Thanksgiving Day. Throughout the season each member of the team gave his best in every battle and never stopped trying until the forty-eight minute mark was reached. When the All Tampa Team was selected, the three Plant gridders who were chosen to represent Plant High were Bob Hewlett, Walter Baldwin, and Pete Milian. Walter Whitehead, John Lynn, and David Hyman were chosen for second string berths. All of these men won their coveted posi- tions as a result of their outstanding work through- out the season. THE SEASON,S SCORES The season opened by an intra-city clash with Jesuit. Although the downtown boys put up a good scrap, the superior man power of the Palma Ceians was the deciding factor and they emerged on the long end of a 20-0 score. PLANT 20-JESUIT 0 FOOTBALL MANAGERS l 734115 Q e NPKCK H A. Peacock, L. Goodrich, B. Stevens, T. Mooney -if 925 The Golden Panthers followed up with another win over the Landon Lions on strictly ground work. The Lions could not crack the Panther's forward wall and took to the air. Conrad, Salario, and Kolurous were outstanding linemen, while Hewlett and Baldwin stood out in the backfield. Final score 27-1 3. PLANT 27-LANDON 13 Orlando's tricky T-formation kept the local Palma Ceians baffled and Ross, a 192 porund half- back, continually pounded the line for gains. The Hughes boys fumbled and folded the last quarter when Orlando scored four times. PLANT 8-ORLANDO 31 Not completely recovered from the upset by Orlando, the Panthers traveled to Jacksonville only to be defeated by Andrew Jackson by a close score of 19-13. Hewlett scored twice. PLANT 13-ANDREW JACKSON 19 The determined Panthers grabbed a second non- conference win from strong Tarpon Springs eleven in the second game away from home. Baldwin and Hartley both turned in fine performances on de- fense, while Hewlett and Salario were the spark on offense. PLANT l3-TARPON SPRINGS 0 Plant scored its second conference win over the huge Green Devils in an upset on the Panthers' home station. Cigarran and Wright were out- standing on offense. Wright kicked three out of four extra points and Cigarran intercepted a pass and set up two scores. PLANT 27-ST. PETERSBURG 14 In the next tilt, the Panthers were dropped by a Hghting Jefferson eleven. This win gave the Dragons their first city title. Hewlett :cored the only tally for the Panthers. PLANT 6-JEFFERSON 13 The Panthers reappeared in the win column when they torpedoed the Lakeland Dreadnaughts 26-7. Hewlett scored twice and Whitehead and Cigarran scored one each. Wright kicked two extra points in three tries. PLANT 26-LAKELAND 7 The Panthers met their ancient rivals, the Hills- borough Terriers, and after a hard fought scoreless Hrst half, the Terriers broke loose their elusive fullback, Ken Sumner, who sprinted 77 yards for the only score of the game. Both teams played even all the way except for one brief play, and the Panthers suffered their fourth consecutive loss to Hillsborough. PLANT 0-HILLSBOROUGH 7 r Lffl lo Rigbl, Row I-L. Caro, R. KN 'KA I KING VERNON of fbv House' of ELLIS UEEN JEANNE of ibn' House of FLYNN ,L 'V sf' M' 106 PANT!-IERILLA ROYALTY l.ong live King of Pantherilla and his royal Queen! The Year of our l,ord MCMXLVIII ushered in our noble King Vernon of the House of Ellis and our beauteous Queen Jeanne of the House of lflynn. They, with their royal court, will reign for a year over us, their loyal subjects, gallant knights and lovely ladies of the Kingdom of Pantherilla, situated in the heart of Plant in Palma Ceia. Since the Year of our I,ord MCMXXVIII we have been under the sway of twenty powerful sovereigns and their queens who have bound us to themselves by their gracious and royal authority. The line of succession requires that each new king and queen be members of that royal line through whose vcins flows the blue blood of those valiants known as Class of Senior Ang also, that they be chosen by popular acclaim in the Spring of each year. The members of the court, known as courtiers, maids and witnesses must be members of the kingdom whose blood is of a less rare type known as lower classmen. 1 107 js:- The entire kingdom, including their royal highnesses and the members of the court, are kept in a state of suspense for many days and nights until, upon the appointed date, on the stroke of eight, the I.ord Cham- berlain begins intoning the names of the witnesses and the royal maids and courtiers. At the height of the suspense, the names of the new king and queen thrill the hearts of their subjects and again illuminate th: greatest social event in the Kingdom of l'antherilla. After the pomp and ceremony of the coronation, it is the custom for the royal court to preside over the King's Ball which marks the end of the beautiful ceremony. Nowhere in our fair land can be found more charm- ing ucenes than those which grace this colorful festivity. liragrant flowers, sparkling jewels, gorgeous costumes, flashing eyes and radiant youth combine to paint pic- tures which will linger in the minds of all devoted subjects until the year comes to a successful end under the scepter of King and Queen of Pantherilla and their Royal Court.
