BOUSHALL Pr't'sit1w1t Vice Presir1t'r11f Sz'Cr1'lary JUNE CLASS HISTORY In the past three years we have lived an age which, once ended, we may never know again except as it comes to us on the mirrors of memory. We shall now attempt to arrange some of the details which may make vivid in our memories the wonderful days spent at Plant High School. ln the fall of I942 we underwent all the traditional indignities suffered by rats. We struggled along through the year enjoying our spirited new life. Our junior year opened in the fall of 1943, and we found that we had gathered a little dignity since the days of being lowly sophomores, but we still lacked the dignity of the lofty seniors who still held us at their command. Little by little different members of the class gained prominence in school, and with the arrival of our senior year, we, the members of the class of 1945, felt the many responsibilities which were upon us. We realized that we were obligated to set good examples for the under classmen. We realized that there were new achievements to be made, and also that we were to be the leaders in all school activities. With these ideas in mind, we set out to make 1945 one of the best years in the history of Plant High School. john Kelton served as president of the student council and Otto Stallings served as vice president the semester preceding this, our last semester. Utto was .lunior Rotarian, also. ln the athletic held, our main stays in football were Otto Stallings, F. D. Warner, David Peppard, Doug Cone, Dick Clarke, Howard Jones, ,lohn Kelton, Bubber Kuhn, Bobby blones, Bob Mitchell, Fddie Bond, Albert Castro, Sam Carastro, and Robert Price. ln basketball, Billy Savage, David Peppard, F. D. VVarner, Tom Whitaker, Dick Clarke, and John Kelton did some fancy handling of the brown sphere. John Kelton and Bob Mitchell played good baseball, and David Peppard set new marks in track records. Otto Stallings set a city pole vault record, and liddie Bond, Dick Clarke, Bob Mitchell, Doug Cone, Bubber Kuhn, Harvey Fernandez, and Leonard Rippa also carried the torch for the gold and black in track events. Fred Shackleford and Ralph Singbush were on the golf team, and Fred also was a strong member of the swimming team. -lumping up and down at the side lines of all the athletic events were our six cheerleaders: Dolly O'Berry, Mary Nell Thrower, Ann McCarty, Betty jean Bartlett, Mary Alice Pitts, and Bert Wyatt. Our music department has been enriched by the following talent: Drum-major Tony Gonzalez, Mack McLean, Robert Price, David Mitchell, Billy Moore, Guy Gillen, Betty Davis, and Leonard Rippa. Boys who were outstanding in R.O.T.C. were Ralph Singbush, Fred Shackleford, Alvin Magnon, Jimmy Wingo, Edwin Nelson, Walter Hale, Vernon Gwynne, and Harvey Fernandez. To sponsor the unit, Bee Bee Minardi, Bertha Tate, Dolly OlBerry, and Marilyn Karnes were chosen from our ranks of girls. Now We have come down the home stretch to the end of our high school course with 'our eyes on the tape, but We all have fixed in our minds the grand days at this wonderful school, our Plant High. The days of joy and fellowship have drawn to a close as the graduation exercises approach, and though we approach that goal with a certain sadness in our hearts, we cannot help but think back over the mem- ories of old alma mater which will cheer us on to our next challenge in life-life after graduation with our heartfelt gratitude toward our young life at Plant. -3413 lie
