PLANT HIGH SCHOOL TAMPA, FLORIDA. 1945 mfewom' Resolving firmly that this annual shall have but one basic purpose-to picture accurately a year's activities at Plant-and believing that any attempt to confine these records Within the boundaries of a theme would defeat this purpose, we, the staff of the 1945 Panther, have chosen for our theme-Plant itself. If this book is ugly, it is because Plant is ugly. If it is beautiful, it is because Plant is beautiful. If it is strong, it is because Plant is strong. We believe this yearbook will never be out of date as long as Plant endures, be- cause Plant will not change fundamentally-and the 1945 Panther is our conception of Plant. B. Plant High School, we now pause to present a brief review of our stay here. ln February of 1942, just three short years ago, we entered Plant as lipstick-smeared sophomores, since that date we have risen from lowly Urats' to illustrious seniors, gain- ing honors and, we hope, some education along the way. In our junior year, we strove hard to make better grades with exemptions and club memberships in mind. The second semester was the one in which we sent our first representatives to the Honor Society. They were Fern Roberts, Doyle Johnson, and Betty Fulford. Q The senior term began in January of 1944, and after a short summer release, we were full-fledged senior A's. Jimmie Gray served us as president of the student body, president of the senior class, and Junior Rotarian. Katherine Cooper was appointed editor of ye olde annual, and before we knew it, we were receiving our diplomas for attending three memorable years at Plant. The Fighting Littles was produced as our class play and line performances were turned out by the cast, some of whom were tapped into the National Thespian Honor Society as a reward. These members were Fern Roberts, Betty Fulford, Mary Mott, Ken Musgrave, Lynn Montgomery, Virginia Wilson, Frank Cohen, Albertina Rosen, June DuPuis, Douglas Knapp, Frances Marshall, and Darian Robertson. More contributions to the National Honor Society were made in our last two semesters: Virginia Wilson, Albertina Rosen, Terry MeNab, Lynn Montgomery, Bob Weeks, Edna Wamble, Katherine Cooper, and Sara Jayne Collins. We sent two charter members to the Gold and Black: Betty Fulford and Fern Roberts, and Virginia Wilson, Jimmie Gray, Kathleen O,Grady, Robert Gruetzmacher, Katherine Cooper, Edna Wamble, and Terry MeNab soon followed. ln the field of sports, Bobby Gruetzmacher, Bobby Roddenberry, Buck Younger, Gregory Gout, Howard Bryan, Buckie Allen, Jack Scott, and Terry MeNab were all football lettermen. Jimmie Gray served ably as football manager. Bobby Doll brought honors to the gold and black by winning the Florida State Junior Tennis championship. Other boys who won letters were Doyle Johnson, Hugh Jerger, and A. W. Murdoch. To the last Royal Court of Pantherilla, Buckie Allen, Juanita Langford, Bobby Gruetzmacher, and Kathleen O'Grady were elected as first maid, cour- tier, and witnesses. The R.O.T.C. was headed by Lieut. Colonel A. W. Murdoch, and Betty Fulford, Catherine Cappello, and Sara Jayne Collins were charter members of the G.O.C. Bob Weeks and Fern Roberts guided the Pep O, Plant in their senior year as editor and assistant editor, respectively. Others on the staff at various times were Buckie Allen, Sara Jayne Collins, Katherine Cooper, Betty Fulford, Bobby Gruetzmaeher, Mary Mott, Kathleen O'Grady, Darian Robertson, Bobby Rod- denberry, Buck Younger, and Edna Wamble. The Key Club was well-manned with boys from our class, including Jimmie Gray, Bobby McElvy. Bobby Roddenberry, Gregory Gout, Terry MeNab, Buckie Allen, Bobby Greutzmacher, and Bobby Doll. Their sister club, the Kiwanettes, took in as members Virginia Wilson, Fern Roberts, and Katherine Cooper. These students were judged to be the most outstand- ing members of their class as key students and school leaders. We have reached the end of our days at Plant, but our affection for her is still great. We look to the future, better men and women for having attended Plant, realizing that we will always carry a part of her in our hearts, hoping that she will carry our memory in hers. a2f10l+ AI.I.EN, CHARLEs All'1'IiUR, JR. We shall now attempt to arrange some of the details which may make vivid in our memories the wonderful days spent at Plant High School. ln the fall of I942 we underwent all the traditional indignities suffered by rats. We struggled along through the year enjoying our spirited new life. Our junior year opened in the fall of 1943, and we found that we had gathered a little dignity since the days of being lowly sophomores, but we still lacked the dignity of the lofty seniors who still held us at their command. Little by little different members of the class gained prominence in school, and with the arrival of our senior year, we, the members of the class of 1945, felt the many responsibilities which were upon us. We realized that we were obligated to set good examples for the under classmen. We realized that there were new achievements to be made, and also that we were to be the leaders in all school activities. With these ideas in mind, we set out to make 1945 one of the best years in the history of Plant High School. john Kelton served as president of the student council and Otto Stallings served as vice president the semester preceding this, our last semester. Utto was .lunior Rotarian, also. ln the athletic held, our main stays in football were Otto Stallings, F. D. Warner, David Peppard, Doug Cone, Dick Clarke, Howard Jones, ,lohn Kelton, Bubber Kuhn, Bobby blones, Bob Mitchell, Fddie Bond, Albert Castro, Sam Carastro, and Robert Price. ln basketball, Billy Savage, David Peppard, F. D. VVarner, Tom Whitaker, Dick Clarke, and John Kelton did some fancy handling of the brown sphere. John Kelton and Bob Mitchell played good baseball, and David Peppard set new marks in track records. Otto Stallings set a city pole vault record, and liddie Bond, Dick Clarke, Bob Mitchell, Doug Cone, Bubber Kuhn, Harvey Fernandez, and Leonard Rippa also carried the torch for the gold and black in track events. Fred Shackleford and Ralph Singbush were on the golf team, and Fred also was a strong member of the swimming team. -lumping up and down at the side lines of all the athletic events were our six cheerleaders: Dolly O'Berry, Mary Nell Thrower, Ann McCarty, Betty jean Bartlett, Mary Alice Pitts, and Bert Wyatt. Our music department has been enriched by the following talent: Drum-major Tony Gonzalez, Mack McLean, Robert Price, David Mitchell, Billy Moore, Guy Gillen, Betty Davis, and Leonard Rippa. Boys who were outstanding in R.O.T.C. were Ralph Singbush, Fred Shackleford, Alvin Magnon, Jimmy Wingo, Edwin Nelson, Walter Hale, Vernon Gwynne, and Harvey Fernandez. To sponsor the unit, Bee Bee Minardi, Bertha Tate, Dolly OlBerry, and Marilyn Karnes were chosen from our ranks of girls. Now We have come down the home stretch to the end of our high school course with 'our eyes on the tape, but We all have fixed in our minds the grand days at this wonderful school, our Plant High. The days of joy and fellowship have drawn to a close as the graduation exercises approach, and though we approach that goal with a certain sadness in our hearts, we cannot help but think back over the mem- ories of old alma mater which will cheer us on to our next challenge in life-life after graduation with our heartfelt gratitude toward our young life at Plant. -3413 lie A1:ER1.E, IDOROTHY ulfllbfill 1401113 hm' fftljl, if will 611 1l1111e reall. NEXT IN LINE lt hardly seems possible that in one more semester we of the Senior B class, who have served our Alma Mater for two and a half years, will cross its threshold for a final term. We would like, however to relate to you some of our outstanding :accomplishments during this time. We are proudly represented in the Honor Society by Kenneth Gould, Mary Ellen Game, Dottie Sue Lamb, Milton Blount, Bob Pittman, and Mary Eliz- abeth Williams. The Gold and Black claimed Mary Ellen Game, Dottie Sue Lamb, lylilton Blount, Kenneth Gould, Sis Ellis, Bucky Ellis, Mary Elizabeth Williams and Bob Pittman. We just about burst with pride when Milton Blount was elected vice-president of the student body. Our other representatives on the Presidentls Cabinet were Bob Pittman, and Dottie Sue Lamb. Gordon Christensen is our able member who served both on the Pep O' Plant and the Annual Staff. We are especially proud of our boys who partici- pated in the various sports: Howard Neil, Bob Pitt- man, O. Rooney, Carl Higgins, Harvey Fernandez, lVIilton Blount, Bucky Ellis, Kenneth Gould, and Dan Murphy. We were well represented in the music department with Agnes Morgan, Marilyn Burchell, Carl Higgins, Betty Rose Wallace, Montel Jones, Edna Marie Byrd, and Mary' Smith as members of the Glee Club. Our band members were Edwin LaVerne, John Hickey, and Frank Menendez. lie Mary Elizabeth Williams, Sis Ellis, Mary Ellen Game, and Dottie Sue Lamb were our girls in the Kiwanettes, while Bob Pittman, Lamar Morrison, and Milton Blount became members of the Key Club. Sis Ellis proudly wore the uniform of an R.O.T.C. sponsor, while our boys in khaki were also gaining rank. And last, but by no means least, to the most royal court of Pantherilla we elected Lady Montez of the House of Jones and Sir George of the House of YVatson as our maid and courtier. Thus ends our class history, with us looking eagerly forward to next year and hoping to live up to the standards set by preceding members of the Senior Class. Now we'll boss P. H. S. J vyo years at llant have marked the -lunior A class as one of the most progressive grades in school, their senior year will have to go far to top the honors already received by their outstanding members. A talented homeroom in a talented class is 101, which led the entire school in the infantile paralysis drive. The Honor Society claimed Charlie Garrison in the spring, and the Gold and Black followed suit with Charlie, jo Ann Flom, Ashley Vincent, Pat Tur- ner, Mary Dupree, and Betty Wade. The new Cam- era Club found its vice-president in Mary Dupree, and another member in Ashley Vincent. Mary is also snapshot editor of the annual, one of two juniors on the staff. Charlie Garrison was elected to the Key Club, and the Kiwanettes likewise honored Preston Farrior and Mary Dupree. Charlie and Ashley served on the Honor Court. Our G.O.C. members are Preston, Pat Turner, Babs Foster, and Bobbie Ficht. Dottie Fletcher proudly wore the uniform of an R.O.T.C. sponsor. Betty VVade, Ashley, Fva Getz, lidmund Glover, and, of course, that Garrison boy, are pillars of the band, while Babs Foster yodels away in the Glee Club. Homeroom 106 has contributed outstanding stu- dents and services to the school, too. Alocelyn Cooper and Christine Parker were tapped into the Gold and Black. Christine, Doris Cowart, Mickey Mook, Peggy -lean Pegues, ,loan Perlman, Mary Elizabeth Petri, Joyce Pierce, and Frances Pope drilled on May Day. Sam Mondello is our football letterman, while Christine and Peggy glean are members of the G.O.C. Arthur Connally in the Science Club, Billy Neilly in the Camera Club, and Ken Mulder in the Key Club all made us very proud. Jocelyn Cooper, Nancy Pat- terson, Frances Pope, and Allen Potter are our musical classmates. Running any other room a close race for honors is H.R. 116. Bettie Rogers is Miss Reid's pride and joy, with her Honor Society, Kiwanette, and Honor Court memberships. Al Rase and Don Williams are in the Key Club and are football lettermen, with Alvin Swilley also making the varsity grid team. Al Rase will be co-captain of the eleven next fall, and he is on the track and basketball teams. The girl oflicers of I 16 are Fvelyn Sumner, Beverly Svein, Mary Crawford, Beryle Solomon, Bettie Rogers Cagainlj, Eleanor Staples, and Pat Shirley. LaVerne Sauls was Z1 major- ette and also an R.O.T.C. sponsor. Serving as an entertainment committee, it was host to the Cadettes from Miami Edison High School, managed a booth at the Honor Society carnival, intro- duced a new and effective monitor system, erected a sign at MacDill Road to direct visitors to Plant, plan- ned and carried out successfully the arrangements for Pantherilla, conducted all school elections, held sev- eral dances, and sponsored many assembly programs. The cabinet served under the leadership of Miss Etoile Reid, faculty adviser, who attends each meet- ing and assists in attacking any problem not appearing to be under the regular administrative routine. For the lirst semester jimmy Gray was elected president by the student body and was assisted by Otto Stal- lings, vice-president, David Peppard, the money- man, and .-Xnn Cooper Knight, our efficient secretary. STUDENT COUNCIL The representative bodv of Plantis student govern- ment is the student council, based on democratic prin- ciples ot representation and lawmaking. The council is made up of homeroom delegates who are elected each semester, thus practising rotation of otiice and giviii as many students as possible a chance to be- come familiar with Plant's political machinery and prepare themselves for more valuable citizenship. The main purpose of the student council is to gather suggestions from the homerooms through the delegates, and to send messages back to the rooms bv these same delegates. All suggestions for school im- provement are considered at the monthly meetings, such as problems in traiiic, smoking, and lunchroom conduct. Special attention was called to the election of coun- cil representatives this past semester when a list of qualifications for delegates was laid down. 'l'hese re- quirements are as follows: CID ability to express him- self wellg QZJ sense of responsibilitvg Q3j promptnessg Q41 ability to take accurate notes at meetingsg QSD initiative and leadershipg QED alertness. 47 E+ The vice-president of the student body presides over the meetings, and a secretary is selected from the delegates. Y HONOR COURT The honor court was formed by a decision of the student government in the fall semester of 1943 for the purpose of promoting honesty and establishing a higher standard of honor in our school. It consists of members from the three classes, senior, junior, and sophomore. Cbuvzwllor, D. Dalton. The court is the judicial branch of the student government, although it started as only a branch of the president's cabinet. Its jury, selected with great care, is composed of eight associate justices, headed by an appointee of the president of the student body who serves as chief justice. Meetings were held this year whenever necessary and all cases were tried. The only aim of this organ- ization is to make Plant High School students realize the importance of honesty. Names of defendants were assembled from the teachers and were brought forth for a fair trial. After the cases had been tried, those who were pronounced guilty were sent to the principal for consideration, while those who were acquitted were required to sign a pledge stating that they would never commit any dishonest deeds while in the halls of Plant High School. This system proved successful with many Florida schools and has proved well worth its trouble to Plant. -:ff 48 jk FIRST Row, Left lo riglalz A. McCarty, D. O'Berry, D. Lamb, B. Boles, C. THE ORDER OF TI-I The Order of the Gold and Black was organized in the fall of 1943 for the purpose of honoring Plant students who have done outstanding service for their school, faculty, and student body. Fach semester a percentage is chosen from the entire student body of those who earn the greatest number of points awarded by the faculty for social activities, endeavor, reliability, volunteer service, initiative, co- operation, and educational achievement. The new members are initiated in a striking assembly program. Two projects which the Gold and Black has ahead of it are the furnishing of a club room and the erec- tion of a memorial clock in the front hall as a tribute to Plant boys who have lost their lives in the armed services. The projects are advancing steadily under the able guidance of faculty sponsor Miss Ruth Gil- liland. ln the fall semester we elected officers as follows: head man, john Keltong assistant prexy, Adaleen Bur- nette, secretary, Betty Petty, and our sticky-lingered , 49 if E GOLD AND BLACK treasurer, Edna Wamble. Querying CLARKE DALTON DAWKINS HARPER KARNES A KELTGN KNIGHT The National Honor Society was organized in 1928 and has steadily grown in membership and service since that time. The socicty is based on four ideals-scholar ship, leadership, character, and service. At first only scholarship was considered, but now each of the four is rated as equally important. The faculty elects the most outstanding students-five per cent from the junior A and Senior classes-to be inducted as members in a tra- ditional candlelight ceremony each semester. The past year has been one of the most active in the history of the organization. The Society sponsored the sale of war bonds and stamps and has established a scholarship fund to be offered to the graduates of the june class meeting certain requirements. To finance this project, a carnival, variety show, and dance were given in October. Also the customary congratulatory slips to students on the honor roll were issued again this year. The group chose as its theme for the year, The Probable Post-War World. Speakers at the regular meetings have talked on various problems confronting the world after the war. . KEY Wlhen this club meets, a sign is hung over the door bearing the Words, UMC11 Only, and there is not one bit of femininity who dares to disturb the Key Club then. 'llhe Plant High Key Club is proud to be one of the newer and one of the most honored clubs in the state. lt is really a branch of the Kiwanis Club, and could be called Junior Kiwanis without a misstate- ment. Formed to encourage better citizenship among high school boys, the group has done much to make its members known as the key citizens of the school. Aicling in the Honor Society carnival, helping with the bus transportation problem, and the refurnishing of the lunch room with new tables and benches were the projects undertaken since fall by the boys, and all but the latter have been accomplished. The quota for the cafeteria project has not yet been reached, but is well on its way. lille C LUB Promoting better relationships between all Florida Key Clubs has been the aim of the Kiwanis Conven- tion, and Plant has sent delegates to both meetings. The present ollicers are David Peppard, president, Denny Herndon, Vice-president, Doug Cone, sec- retary, and Dick Clark, treasurer. Vim' Presirfeni, D. Herndong Serri'lary, D. Cone Presia'n1i, D. GIRLS' OFFICERS CLUB Continuing the streamlined physical education pro- gram begun two years ago with the military organiza- tion groups, the Girls' Ofiicers Club has been the governing body of the girls' classes. The club is com- posed of captains and lieutenants of each of the four periods and is guided by our celebrated physical edu- cation director, Mrs. Julie Lane. Not satisfied with the mere chartering of the club, Mrs. Lane keeps the G.O.C. on the alert for any project useful in develop- ing better leaders, better citizens, and better female Panthers. Taking over a job which many clubs would not have considered worthwhile, the Officers sold programs at 1 34.3 vw . ..avg 7 ' ,J in r .,.55:.sa.:,. . by .Q .M 9 ' ' F' ' . J every home football game. They played hostesses to the Miami lidison Cadettes, providing transportation and entertainment for the South Florida steppers who were the inspiration for Plant's smart showing on Phillips Field, Thanksgiving Day. Given only three weeks' practice time, the Oflicers whipped a large group of Plant girls into a colorful and well-executed drill. With a ghastly gift for gruesomeness, the G.O.C. provided chills, thrills, and spills in their spook show during the Honor Society carnival, and the three members graduating in january were shown very proper respect when the club threw a memorable spaghetti luncheon for them in the Home Bc rooms. Digging into intramural doings as well as outside activities, Lane's Lassies sponsored the inter-class bas- ketball tournament and drilling contest, with lunch- eons as prizes. Truly, a cross-section of the G.O.C. is a cross-sec- tion of the best in Plant's girls, and gives a clear pic- ture of what Plant's girls are, have been, and will be in the future. The club officers during the fall semester were .-Xdaleen Burnett, Flo Lyles, Charlotte Bartlett, and Patricia Ann Turner, president, vice-president, sec- retary, and treasurer, respectively. This spring Mary Alice Pitts was head woman, Shirley McKay was assistant boss, Li'l Bartlett continued to take minutes, and Nancy Hahn was the financial Wizard. ef ii ... A SEATED, Left to riglalz D. LETTERMEN'S CLUB The Plant High School Lettermen's Club is com- posed of those boys whose achievements in some ath- letic game have been outstanding enough to earn them a letter in that sport. This year, at the close of the gridiron season, foot- ball letters were presented at a special banquet to which each senior boy and member of the lirst string team invited a sponsor to present him his letter. The spon- sors served at the banquet, which was otherwise a strictly stag affair. Local sports Writers and alumni also attended the dinner, held in the lunchroom. Letters are awarded for participation in basketball, baseball, track, tennis, golf, and swimming, also. Letter winners are not limited to the active players in the various sports, since a MPH may be presented for out- standing service to a team, such as being manager. Principal C. Phil Peters is an honorary life member of the club and displays a framed letter in his otlice. The athletic Hall of Fame, started by Coach Price Leeper, is composed of Plant lettermen who have Won state-wide recognition in their particular Held, such as, being selected for an All-State or All-Big Ten team or for setting a state record in individual sports. -Mlvlir Championship teams also may have their pictures added to the selected collection in the coachls oflice. The Lettermen's Club sold cold drinks at all bas- ketball games this year and also helped with the Honor Society carnival, thus carrying on their tradition of service outside of the athletic field as well as inside. CLUB The D.S.lW. club was organized in 1943 for the purpose of providing a club and social life for the daughters of service men. The purpose of the club was also to acquaint its members with the pupils of the school and to help them learn the rules and the organ- ization of Plant High. The idea for the organization was introduced by Nlyrtle Herndon fa graduate of 19445 who is herself the daughter of a service man. From a small beginning-six charter membersfthe organization has grown to a membership of thirty. The club's most outstanding achievement was mak- Trc'ux1zrr'r, F. Hansong l'rr'xiJvl1!, B. These gifts were distributed to the men by the Red Cross workers. The l3.S.M., which means Daughters of Service Men, is proud that its members participate in war work. They take an active part in all Red Cross drives and do anything that in some small way helps bring' closer the day of victory. However, the club is not all work and no play. Once a month there is a social meeting at the home of one of the members and an informal good time is had by all. Twice each year the club has a large social affair-a buffet supper and planned entertainment- to which each member is allowed to bring one guest. GIRL RESERVES To tind and give the best is the motto and pur- pose of the Plant High Girl Reserves, a voluntary service club advancing constantly toward perfection of aims and deeds. Their meetings were held on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month at the Y.W.C.A. under the counsel and supervision of their advisers, Mrs. limily Rahey, Miss Nlyrtle Gilliland, and Miss Martha Keel. The project for the year 1944-45 was the formation and continuation of the junior hospital aides. 'llhese Hjades' worked at the Municipal and St. joseph's Hospitals and rendered valuable service to the over- worked medical organizations. ln addition to this service, the Girl Reserves help every year in the sale of Christmas and Faster seals and can always be counted on to plan a beautiful Christmas assembly. liach of the seventy-live members participated in at least one of the four club projects. Four Plant girls, Marilyn Karnes, jane Carol Levy, Betty Petty, and Mary Shannon Wzildrop, were sent as delegates to a conference in Georgia last summer. Supper meetings were held once a month to which jfs Plant, Hillsborough, and jefferson Girl Reserves were invited, thus the group includes fun and friendship along with their serious work. Betty Petty and Gene Sawyer served ably this past semester as co-presidents, assisted by vice-prexy Mary lilixabeth Williams, minute-taker Beverly Sewell, and treasurer Billie jean Leonard. Nlembers submit each month one of their best pictures, the subject of their own choice, and the best photo is selected from all entries. The winning photographer explains how the result was produced with reference to lighting conditions, timing, etc. These discussions have benefitted all members making the hobby more useful and fascinating, and giving suggestions for better pictures as well. Beryl Kitchen as sponsor. Feeling that OFFICERS Pf6JiIl87lf'A. BURNETT Vine President-B. Rgglsas Secrefary-G. SAWYER Treafurer-VV. Bi4:'r'1's M some special recognition was due those who were on the semester principalls honor roll, Mr. Peters organ- ized the club from the semester principal's honor roll students, and based it on the high ideals laid down by Mr. William Danforth in his book, I Dare Youf, The book is in the form of a challenge to potentially strong personalities, urging them to attain their best in every endeavor, to dare to be a physical, mental, spiritual, and social leader. No other group in the school is so well-fitted to take up this challenge as are the straight A' students, in the opinion of Mr. Peters. At the club's first meeting Mrs. Kitchen appointed several committees whose function will be to organize the society for immediate entrance into school activ- ities. These committees are as follows: organization, constitution, program, recognition ceremony, and nomination. With an energetic group as a nucleus, and four- fold development as the goal, the l Dare Youll Club appears to be headed for prominence among the activ- ities and honors of Plant. eil as + Y n 9 4k Mc!'QqI dw ..
