Soon, however, we became accustomed to the big school and joined enthusiastically into all its ac- tivities. As our first class officers we chose Ethlyn Coggin, president, Nell Brownlee, vice president, and Virginia Ne Smith, secretary. That year Kather- ine Hudson and Bob johnston repre- sented our class in the Court of Pan- therilla. ln our junior year we elected Bob Iohnston as president, Charles Harper, vice president, and Art Christy as sec- retary of our class. This time Katherine Hudson and Art Christy graced the Court of Pantherilla as fourth maid and courtier. ln our Senior year we elected Charlie Davis as president, Art Christy as vice president, and Mary French Dekle, sec- retary. Mary French and Art were also our representatives as second maid and courtier in the Pantherilla Court. Our Class of january 1940 has fur- nished some of the most outstanding students that Plant has ever graduated. Playing their last season on the Panther Eleven were: Charlie Davis, Captain, Gus Koulouris, Alternate Captain, and Charles Berry, Art Christy, john Flan- ders, Edwin Ericson, C. L. Hennis, Bill Bamage, and Sammy White. Our Bas- ketball stars were Charles Berry, Art Christy and Henry Fontanills. For the Student Council, we elected Charlie Davis, president, Bill Bamage, vice president, while Art Christy, Eth- lyn Coggin, Mary French Dekle, jean Pryor, and Albert Woodburn served as members of the President's Cabinet. Our members who served on the Pep O' Plant Staff were: Margaret Chandler, Clifton Curry, Lillian joughin, and Rob- ert Tuck. The outstanding journalists of our class, Margaret Chandler, Lillian joughin and Lula joughin, were chosen as members of the Quill and Scroll. Three of our number were elected as junior members of the various out- standing civic clubs. These were: lean Pryor, Pilot Club, Albert Woodburn, Botarian, and Bob Iohnston, Kiwanian. The following members were officers in the R.O.'T.C.: George Yates, Major, Mac Ford, Sergeant Major, and Albert Woodburn, Lieutenant. The upper fifteen per cent of our class who were chosen as members of the National Honor Society were: Ethlyn Coggin, Mary French Dekle, Emily Ful- ler, Comolia Gonzalez, Lillian Ioughin, Lula Ioughin, Bob Iohnston and Robert Tuck. Bob served as president of the Honor Society this semester. The years which we have spent in Plant have now become history which we shall always remember with pleas- ure. lt is with a feeling of regret that We leave Plant's halls to make further history in the years that now lie ahead. Since that day We have risen from lowly Sophomores to high and mighty Seniors. Our Sophomore class officers Were: Doyle Carlton, president, Freddie Duffy, vice president, and Mildred Woodbery, secretary. The next year Doyle was again elected president, While Bill Mc- Elmurray served as vice president and Katheryn Nelson, secretary. During our last year We elected Bill McElmurray, presidentg Freddie Duffy, vice presi- dent, and Katheryn Nelson, secretary. ln our Sophomore year, We elected as our Pantherilla nobility Lady Katheryn of the House of Nelson, and Sir Doyle of the House of Carlton, as fifth maid and courtier. ln our lunior year, they rose in their noble rank to third maid and courtier. This spring Lady Kath- eryn of the House of Nelson and Sir William of the House of Stone served as first maid and courtier. The student body chose from our class as royal rulers Queen Mildred of the House of Woodbery and King Doyle of the House of Carlton. On the athletic field We were ably rep- resented on the football gridiron by Robert Brake, Doyle Carlton, Edwin Dunn, Emmett Gentry, Billy Ienkins and loe Tamargo. On the basketball court We were represented by Doyle Carlton, Kenneth Iacobson, Bill McElmurray and lack Lawler. Billy Stone, Marjorie Lambert and Ruth Wisdom, serving as cheerleaders, have boosted our school spirit for the past three years. The student body elected from our class Doyle Carlton as president of the Stu- dent Council and Ruth Wisdom as vice president. Those who have gained scholastic rec- ognition by being chosen as members of the National Honor Society are: lane Cavenaugh, Patricia DePury, Evelyn Gillespie, Rosemary Groves, Marjorie Hansen, Charlotte Harriman, Beth Hotchkiss, Frances Hurd, Marilyn Levy, Helen Lynn, Allie Maynard, Norma Mc- Rae, Marion Neil, Margaret Olsen, Mary lo Parks, Peggy Quinby, Deborah Reed, Gloria Runton, Iack Smith, Frank Rosenblatt, Lola Anne Sparkman, Lily Star, Ralph Teijido, leane Trigg, Peggy Lee Walker, Cecile Waterman, Laura Weekly, Ruth Wisdom, Marion Wood and Lula Wright. To represent our class in the various city civic clubs, We chose Katheryn Nel- son as our PilotClub Representative and Charlie Henderson for the Rotary Club. Thus it is that behind us We have left our mark of distinction ground into the everlasting soul of our Alma Mater. That she will always uphold the stand- ards for which We have so earnestly striven is truly our heartfelt desire. Starting With a mem- bership of around fifteen, the club under the able direction of Mrs. Eleanor Hayt, the school librarian, has grown in such leaps and bounds that the library is hardly able to accommodate them. The club elected as officers Peggy Lee Walker, president, Norman Allen, first vice president, Cecile Waterman, second vice president, Martha Hanley and Billie Webb, secretaries, and Marjorie Lambert, treasurer. These officers were elected to serve for two semesters. As the club is a literary society the program committee, Working under Norman Allen, has planned their programs carefully around the club's love of books. The meetings are arranged so that there is one business meeting and three program meetings each month. There has been a great variety of programs such as games, book reviews, and reports about the literature of different countries. As Mrs. l-layt and the officers all are hoping that the club will be continued next year, plans are now being made for the election of officers for the l94U-4l school year. To insure the existence of the club a constitution is being drafted. PHS PANTHER PAN -AMERICAN CLUB The Pan-American Club was organized in 1938 with the purpose of furthering the members' knowledge of the languages and customs of the Pan-American countries. PANTHER LIBRARY ASSISTANTS Plant's library is managed principally by students under the capa- ble direction of Mrs. Eleanor Hayt, the school librarian. The duties of the students are the repairing oi books, the cataloging of new books, checking out books from the main desk and from the reserve shelves. Each student Works an hour a day and the schedule is so arranged that each person has the chance ol assisting at each phase of li- brary Work. ln doing this, one learns whether he Wants to study Library Science in a university, and acquires general information about the books and the library itsell which is quite helpful. To become library assistant a UC average and an earnest interest in library Work are necessary. The following have served as library assistants lor this semester: Iames Alexander, Norman Allen, Berta Anderson, Mary Isabel Baker, Pebley Barrow, Marion Buffa, Cynthia Carroll, lack Forbes, Nancy Hamlett, Lula loughin, Margaret McCasl-zill, Evans McLen- don, Ieane Parker, Harriet Paxton, Erwin Ray, Lola Ann Sparkman, Bob Setzer, and Peggy Lee Walker. 1940 PANTHER I . Charlie Davis, the last of four brothers who have served on Plant's football teams since the organization of the school, served as captain of the l939 Panther Eleven. l-le was ably assisted by Gus Koulouris as alternate captain. A more gallant Panther eleven never entered a football stadium against its keenest rival than the 1939 squad. On the occasion of this momentous Thanksgiving Day game against Hills- borough Terriers, fate turned against them. After the Panthers had scored the first touchdown, the Terriers came from behind to take the lead. Again the Panthers scored to tie the score, but in the last few seconds of the game the Terriers scored a field goal to win, l5-12. The prospects for the 1940 squad are very bright as the B squad has some very promising players. SUMMARY Plant . . . ,........,.,.. Bradenton 7 Plant . . , .,... Long live the Queen! Long life and perpetual charm to the beauteous maids and handsome court- iers. Sentiments like these rose spontaneous- ly from the hearts and lips of a brilliant audience at the Plant High auditorium thirteen years ago, as the first King and Queen of Pantherilla were crowned. From this night forth Pantherilla has be- come a tradition in the social activities of Plant High. Through the years, al- though the tradition has remained, the coronation of their majesties has altered a great deal. Thirteen years ago, the first Coronation was held at the annual carnival and was a minor attraction used for making extra money. Today Pantherilla is the most outstanding event connected with commencement. In accordance with a custom estab- lished several years ago the King and Queen must come from the Senior A class and are elected by the entire school. Also from the Senior A class is elected one boy to serve as first courtier and one girl who serves as first maid. Each of the other classes are also repre- sented by one of their own rank who serves as one of the next-five maids and courtiers. ln addition to these royal members of the court each class elects one boy and girl to serve as the honor- able witnesses of the crowning of the King and Queen. The first rulers to grace the throne of Pantherilla were Robert of the House of Gilliam and Rebecca of the House of Price. The following year King Robert and Queen Rebecca gave up their crowns to King Holmes Kirkland and Queen Marguerite Kreher. The next royal heirs to the throne were King Steve Trice and Queen Martha Owens, who were succeeded by King Charles Fleming and Queen Elmorine McDuffie, The next rulers of Pantherilla, King Nel- son of the House of Davis and Queen Ieanie of the House of Trice, were then chosen to rule the court of Pantherilla. The eighth year the student body elected as their rulers Queen Maella lohnson and King Iohn Tarr. Serving their subjects equally as well as ninth King and Queen were Millicent Hamp- ton and Stockton Smith. Two years ago the beautiful Gene Parkhill was named as Queen along with the handsome Chicken McDuffie. And just last year Betsy McMichael and George Henri- quez were named as the twelfth Queen and King of Pantherilla. Finally amid a thunder of applause the thirteenth King and Queen of Pantherilla, their majesties Doyle of the House of Carlton and Mildred of the House of Woodbery, ascended to their royal thrones. The memories of the crowning of beau- tiful Queen Mildred and courtly King Doyle will always stand out as the most memorable event of our stay at Plant. Long live Pantherilla!
