Perhaps We seemed ungrateful, hard and coldg The World has called us names resembling these And doubtless you have wanted, times untold, To lay us, one and all, across your knees. But under every rouged and powdered phiz, And underneath the boldest boy,s bland stare, You surely know that even now there is The same old struggle to be fair and square. The teachings which we seemed most to ignore, We feel most deeply to be ine and trueg We take them with us as a precious store Of priceless things-our heritage from you. We were the first class to be 'lrattedf' Although a small class, our members supported every activity of the school with lots of pep. Our girls made quite a record in a scholastic way, and our boys turned out for athletics with vigor. Ivan Cornelius, Frank Houlihan and Alfred Cosgrove represented us in track and baseball. The first year was soon behind us and we became admired Juniors. We were credited in athletics and scholarship. In our Junior A year we gave the best Jr.-Sr. Banquet ever given at the school. During the latter part of our junior year and the first half of our Senior year our girls started a project, later carried out by the entire school. This was the plan for a girls' infirmary. In our Senior BU year this was flnished and our girls deserve most of the credit for its success. In this semester we were again at our work. Bob Lau, president of the class, was also vice-president of the Student Council. Our other representatives for the Council were jane Mabry and Warrick Porter. We were represented on the Honor Society by Mildred Wolf, Florence Haimovitz and Lester Harmon. Due to the size of the class we were only allowed a few members on this honored list. In our Senior AH year we really stepped out. Richard Glazier was elected president of the class and led us in school activities. We were represented on the football team by Schwartz and Starbuck, the latter making the All-State team. Starbuck also represented our class and the whole school in Miami where he played on Florida's All-Star footboll team versus W'hite Plains, New York, team. Our class play, a mystery story, was termed-by experts as one of the best plays given by any class in the history of the school. As the time approached for us to graduate, we turned affectionate glances on our dear old school. We graduated with honors and we wished success to all following graduates. - BILLY GILLEN, Class Hisfrwiuaz. - - - A A - - - - - QQ-: : :QQ:QQ---0000000000QQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQ -I-I'--'in 1931 aa-at W. Thai ff77IL' long paw. just a few of the shadows of sadness or delight can be recorded in this brief history of the Class of ,3l. During the three years since 1928, which our class spent in dear old Plant, most of the shadows have been those of delight. The humiliation of ratting and of initiations into such an institution of learning as Plant were easily borne. We dug right into hard work and let the upper classmen know that we were a class to rival the best in school spirit and willingness to work. Ray Mendez was chosen to guide us through our first year. Stephen Trice, Ivan Cornelius, Bill Setzer, and Dean Smith battled along with the big juniors and Seniors in football. We all felt a great deal of pride when Grady Lester, who played running guard, was chosen on the West Coast Conference Basketball team in his Sophomore year. ,lack Taylor and Clyde Perry, the representatives of our class, were two of the outstanding players on the Golf Team. The first year closed, summer passed, and when school opened again in September of 1929, we, as Juniors, were de- termined to accomplish greater deeds than ever before, The reigns of government passed on to Stephen Trice. There were many Juniors among the Seniors to receive the coveted football letters. It was a great thrill for the boys to attain these letters for they meant tying Hillsborough with a 6-6 score. Billy Gaither took Grady's place as guard when Grady became a star forward who neatly made baskets from the middle of the court. In baseball, Bob Lau stood his grounds at second base and others of our boys helped Plant win nine of our twelve games. Frank Houlihan and Ivan Cornelius were great helpers in Plant's winning third place in the West Coast Track Meet. We juniors were proud to have Clyde Perry elected Captain of the Golf Team. Jack Wilson, as Art Editor of the annual, helped to win for Plant the fist prize for year books in the State Contest. QQQQQQQQQQ- --A----o- ----QA -AA---- - XVe gave the Seniors the best banquet ever enjoyed at Plant. High. The piratic atmosphere of adventure, booty, and revelry, which we carried out, was real enough to turn the Seniors and us, too, into regular Captain Kidds. We witnessed the graduation of our beloved Seniors and realized that in just a year's time we would be taking a last farewell of Plant. We resolved to make our last year the best and happiest of them all. Norman Stallings was elected President of the Senior B Class and under his leadership we did much to win a place of distinction for Plant. We played our last season of foot- ball and more hard won letters were awarded. Ione Rubush took over the editing of the Pep O' Plant and she put out a mighty fine paper. Christmas came and FIIOSI of us passed our exams. Our last semester was before us. Norman was re-elected President of our class. Stephen Trice became President of the Student Council and Martha Owens the editor of the Pep O' Plant. Plant won the City Championship in basketball and de- feated Hillsborough three out of four games. Through Gradyls excellent playing, and, with the help of the lower classmen, Plant entered the semi-finals in the State Tourna- ment. Grady won honorable mention for the All-State Team. Another favorte, Jack Taylor, advanced to the finals for State Amateur Golf Championship and was barely de- feated by a former University of Florida student. Gay old carnival days came around again. The merry band of Panthers and Pantherettes were happier and more lively than ever under the goodly rule of Steve Trice, King Pantherllla III and his beautiful Queen Martha Owens. Green Stockings was the cutest Class Play Plant boys and girls have ever given-and so was the cast. What a future there is in the theatrical world for some of Plant's students-especially Sara Rankin! The days of joy and fellowship were fast drawing to a close. The shadows of sadness and delight lengthened into one glowing light-graduation-a farewell to careless youth, . eh Il to 1'fe. . . 1 3 enge I NIARTHA w,l'II1'.'XKEK, Hrxlorzan. 1 93 00-0 : : : : :QQQQ : :QQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQ oo : : ooo : : ooqqqoopooeooQooaooooeoooaooooeoepooooooo H3- -A 19 of. Clays Hifiory X ln January, 1929, we came to Plant as Rats, somewhat reluctantly it must be admitted, because at Wilson we had been quite openly admired and we understood only too well that our reception at Senior High would certainly be anything but encouraging to our peace of mind. But on the whole, we were treated rather kindly. It being mid-year, perhaps some of the joy of ratting had worn off for the Juniors and Seniors, and suflice to say that we carried trays in countless numbers, and became a little too well acquainted with lipstick to be quite comfortable regarding that boon to the world of beauty thereafter. We are very proud of our sterling contributions to the Plant athletics. Among the girls, Ellen Anderson, Dorothy Hensley and Cecile McCord are representatives, while Ed Carter, Charles Fleming, Billy Gaither, Jim Dean, and Lloyd Griffin have more than done their share in furnishing the trophy case. In january we entertained at a banquet for the 1931 Senior Ais, and did ourselve quite proud, or so we thought. We have always endeavored to do our best for Plant in every way, and shall con- tinue to do so up to the moment when we receive our diplomas and have spent the last day within these halls and classrooms. Even then, we will go out into the world with the best wishes for its future and continued success. qqoeeooooooooQoooosoaooaggQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQooeyoooooeoeoa-- 1931 X , .W ' . Between slinking cautiously around the halls and carrying trays, we decided to elect otlicers. Raymond Caraballo was handed the reins of office. So efficiently did he perform his duties, that he was again chosen President for the second semester. One morning we were rudely awakened by a verbal knockdown from some of the Seniors, who deplored our seeming lack of school spirit. So, very indignant, We decided to show them! Result-please note the lovely radio we almost won selling tickets in the competition between Plant and Hillsborough. Our class sold more tickets than either the Seniors or the Juniors. These medals signify membership in the National Honor Society. They bear the flaming torch of knowledge upon the keystone of eternal stability. Membership in the society is considered the highest honor which a high school student can win. Since schools are established primarily for scholastic purposes, to excel in oneis studies is to excel in the principle field of school activity. Possession of the Honor Society pin in high school is equivalent to possession of the Phi Beta Kappa key in college. The Honor Society has chapters in only the outstanding schools in the country, so Plant may well feel honored that its chapter was established in the first year of the school's existence. The membership is limited to not more than fifteen percent of any class, of which five percent may be selected in the Junior A semester, five in the Senior B semester, and five in the Senior A semester. The Plant Honor Society faculty committee is composed of Mrs. Hough, Miss Brown, Miss Mosely, and Mr. Nava. Qo .ooooooQ--: : 1 2-4- : :o-o: :o: : : : :,-::-: :::--Q--,.QQ. 1931 ' A . -.3 .'- T ! Tact, diplomacy, and friendly appeals have been found more eilicient than discipline by punishment and like methods. It is a tribute to the ideals and principles of this organization that each representative is looked upon with a wholesome respect by the student body, and in the most genial attitude. Each year, the Council sponsors athletic activities, campaigns for general school welfare, and the like. The cooperation of the students in such matters is necessary, and through their Whole-hearted support, the Student Council is enabled to crown its efforts in a glorious success for Plant! The members of the council for this semester are: Steve Trice, President, Charles Fleming, Vice-President, lone Rubush, Secretary, Martha Whitaker, Marjorie Moore, Lucy jackson, Beba Torre, Isabel Taylor, Dorothy Hensley, John Lively, julia Farrior, John Myers, Nat Glogowski, Rafael Mendez, Clyde Perry. 19 3 1 Tv- T------T--T----Tv a - Q -,gg Q Y, A Q f l o Jim i? Work, play, fellowship, and worship are good ways of keeping up the conversation. And this year, Girl Reserves have been keeping up a lively conversation, not by just one of the ways mentioned, but by all the ways. We have helped one another throughout the year to live the life of a true Girl Reserve with the code of the National Organization as our model. This yearis program was outlined as Film Fun. Each meeting, according to its type, was named from a movie. Some of the out- standing meetings were: UI-Iappy Days, week- end at camp, East is Westf, World Fellow- ship, Silent Enemy,', joint meeting with Hills- borough, Our Dancing Daughters, Mother- Daughter meeting, The Girl from Wool- worth's, vocational meeting, 'tKing of Kings, the Christmas pro-gram, and Journey's End, Senior send-off. It was very capably sponsored by Mrs. Elizabeth Hodgson, with Chester Weems as drum-major, Fred Carter and Fred Morgan as directors. The members of the band have a uniform which consists of a yellow sweater with a black letter on the front and black and gold caps. The band has taken part in all home football games, pep meetings, South Florida Fair concerts for school exhibits, and the Music Festival. In the Music Festival, staged on April 18-19 in Tampa, they played 'QThe Coronation March by Meyerbeer. The band journeyed to Plant City on Armistice Day to take part in an Armistice parade held over there before the Plant City-Plant game. It is doubtful if the student body would have displayed the pep they have shown in the games, etc., if the band had not encouraged cheers with its stirring music. Be- sides being a good band, it was likewise a peppy one. Long may its music be remembered. eoe::::::Q:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: 1931 - g -,gg f ' in-L' ' 4 Y 1 , .Q , r Q ' ' ' ' fe: ilikiiikx LYS, 0 ' .'1l'il'S S9 The Orcheffm More active than ever, the orchestra has continued to be one of the outstanding features of Plant. The Pep O' Plant is printed each week. All advertisements, headlines, page forms, etc., are made-up by the students. For this reason, a new organization, the Social Science Club, was formed by a group of students desiring to increase their knowledge of public affairs and the activity of the state in the exercise of its political powers. In order to obtain a broader learning and understanding of the trend of present day events, the members have held round table discussions about civil proceedings in not only this city and country, but in nations all over the world. So great has become the status of society, that in order to understand its problems, careful scientific analysis of all the phases of modern society-economic, social, political, and religious, must be made. The Social Science Club has brought to the attention of its members these ever changing social complications of the present day, and has created and fostered that spirit of inquiry and desire for understanding which, in later life, makes of inexperienced high school students the worthy and valued citizen. In order to be a member of this club, girls have to have a letter which can only be obtained by getting 350 points a semester for her work in the various sports. No more than 150 points in any one sport may be counted toward win- ning a letter. This year we are offering skills and tap--dancing in addition to the regular physical education routine, and points are be- ing given for the different attractions. Eligi- bility is sustained by making your S0 points each semester, while in school, unless prevented from so doing by some physical handicap. Any girl who Wins a letter, automatically becomes a member of the club. We have as our purpose the planning of athletic programs for the girls physical education class, school and out- side meets. Squad captains, as well as all man- agers are chosen from this club. Management of each individual sport, such as volleyball, basketball, track, baseball, archery, tennis and swimming is placed in the hands of the club members. Every girl in the Girl's Letter Club is doing all she can to promote athletic activi- ties among our girls and to arouse more interest in girl,s sports. The club is very capably spon- sored by Miss Pierce, girl's coach and athletic director, who plans all varsity and interclass games and meets. NS., ' Football Review Although Plant did not have a state cham- pionship team, the Panthers compiled one of the best records yet made by a Plant eleven after meeting the best teams in the state. They ended the season with four wins, four losses and one tie. The team was represented on the All-State selection by Hal Starbuck and Charles Fleming, tackle and center respectively. Plant opened the season against Palmetto. The immediate score was a tie-0 to 0, but Plant was later awarded the game, 1 to 0, be- cause of the use of ineligible players by Pal- metto. A Plant victory was no more than right. In the game our boys out gained the Palmetto aggregation by fifteen first downs to their four. Fumbles were the cause of the lack of scoring punch. In the second tilt of the year, the Panthers met and defeated Bradenton High by a score of 12 to 6. A thrill developed in this game when Day, flashy Bradenton back, took the opening kick-off for a touchdown. The Panthers rallied, man- aging to hold Braden- ton and overcome their lead. Plant again showed the lack of a scoring punch, in not being able to score but two touchdowns on sixteen first downs. Our old rivals, the St. Pete Green Devils, crossed the bay to de- feat us 13 to 7 in our next gabe. This game was featured by the ball carrying of Brown a n d Puryear, w h 0 proved too much for Plant. In a last quarter attack, Plant scored a touchdown and was on the road for another when the game closed. ED WINDHAM A- -A ----------A--A-----------ooo Plant,s first road trip was a journey to Daytona Beach. The game resulted in a 7 to 7 tie. In the first half the Panthers took the overconfident Buccaneers by surprfse, and, by ripping huge gains through their line, marched down the field for a touchdown. In the sec- ond half the Daytona team rallied and man- aged to eke out a tie. The following week end Plant journeyed to Miami and was defeated 19 to 6 by the Stingerees. A long pass from I-Iance to Lynn netted Plant's only touchdown. However, the game was a hard fight and not as one sided as the score indicates. On Armistice Day, the Panther eleven met and defeated Plant City, 20 to 0. The game was played before a large crowd in Plant City. The Planters put up a good game, but were a little too light for the heavier Plant team. Plant's best game of the season was played against Lakeland. The Dreadnaughts were on the big end of a 12 to 0 score, but after the game they knew they had been in a football game. Their two touchdowns were the re- sults of two long runs-both over S0 yards. On Thanksgiving Day, Plant and Hillsbor- ough clashed for the city championshp. The Terriers won by 13 to 0. Although they lozt, the Panthers put up a good fight. The game was full of thrills from start to finish. At the annual football banquet held at the Hillsboro Hoted, Charles Fleming was elected captain for 1931. Herman Manson was chosen as alternate captain. The june graduation will claim thirteen letter men. Their record for the season was thirteen wins and three losses. After they had de- feated the Terriers 7 to 1 for the championship of the upper half of district 7, a forfeit to Bradenton kept Plant from entering the State Baseball Meet. Plant lost one game to both Lakeland and Brooks- ville, The Panthers hold two victories over each of the following teams: New Port Richey, Clearwater, Winter Haven, St. Leo College, and F. M. I. The climax of the season was the winning of the City Championship from Hillsborough. Plant, behind the steady hurling of Walter Davis, took the opening game in a walkaway. The score was 12 to 2. The Terriers came back strong in the second game and ,banged Strawn and Dean for a 9 to 4 victory. The third and deciding contest was 'the closest yet waged between the two schools. The Terriers tied the score in the last of the ninth, In their part of the tenth Plant managed to eke across one run and then hold Hillsborough in the last QQQsoQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQ-0 of the tenth. The score was Plant 5, Hillsborough 4. This was Plant's second City Championship in four years. Plant's infield, composed of Lloyd Griffin at first base, Billy Gaither on second base, Jim Dean at short stop, and Rudy Rodriqucz at third base, played airtight ball throughout the season. They were backed up by a sapable outfield made up of Bob Lau in right field, Willie Strawn in center field. Charles Fleming as catcher played his position well while Walter Davis, Plantis hurling ace, was said to be one of the best pitchers in the state. Nat Glogowski, out-fielder, Billy Bowman, in-fielder, and Phil Whitacker, pitcher, were dependable substitutes, Plant had a hard hitting club with many batters hit- ting well over .500. Lau finished the season with a mark of .400. Close behind him were Dean, Hance and Gaither who were hitting over JSO. Fleming, Griffin, Gaither, Lau and Montanye will be lost to Plant for next season. Qoooooooooeoqq,Qooooooeqeqeooeqoooqqg 1931 i A . , .al l n an . Q -'49 'Q ' , 0 A 9 f . ,Ax . .
