I was thinking not long ago of the year I graduated from Plant High School, and remembering my classmates, all of whom had aspired to high achievements on the wheel of life. Being possessed of an insatiablet curiosity l thought it would be very interesting, and perhaps even amusing, to try to learn, in some way, what had happened in the past ten years to these beloved classmates of mine. Not being the seventh daughter, of a seventh daughter, or some such gifted per- son, and therefore absolutely unable to find out for myself, I communicated with the world renowned Crystal Gazer-Madame Psyche, with whom you may be more or less familiar, sent her the names and explained to her in detail the characteristics of the various individuals, in that class of June, 1929. Realizing that her reply is of vital interest to each and every one of you, I am taking this opportunity of reading to you Madame Psyche's message to us from the occult world ......... My Dear Madam: In accordance with your request I put myself in touch with the occult thru the medium of my crystal-and lo and behold the first to appear before my searching gaze was-your class beauty-Miss Ruth Ybanez, who is now world-famed for her loveliness and recently chosen Miss America ..... Next appeared ..... Eugene Montayne, an actor, another John Barrymore. As for Katherine Carter, Joy Ferguson, and Ruth Mason I see them now, mann- quins at Worth's. Louis Castor's engagement to Joan Crawford has recently been announced... Margaret Roach is now a world-famed opera singer, most noted for her perform- ance in Carmen ... The Panther Q 'J-X9 COACH ROBERTSON Our coach of all sports coached us in football as well as basketball, base- ball and track. Robertson came to us from Franklin Junior High, having coached at Wilson before that. His ser- vices this past year has been marked by the conscientious way in which he put his whole being into his work. Coach has been a wizard at financing, having pulled the Athletic Association several hundred dollars out of the hole. F. VAN CLAYTON Assistant Coach Fate was good to us in sending Mr. Clayton to be our Assistant Coach. He hailed from South Carolina, served Plant excellently, and then departed for Ala- bama. His job was to teach the subs and provide a team worthy of opposing the first during practice. This he did well, tor by the end of the season there was only a shade's difference between the original iirst and second teams. JAMES BEASLEY 6' 3 -Tackle-175 lbs. A more dependable or more deserving tackle could not have been chosen for All State than Beasley. He was always lighting, a sure tackler, seldom injured, and a most consistent player. Plant is depending on you, Beasley, to represent her on All State again next year. ROBERT GILLIAM 6' 1 -Center-165 lbs. Bob was an excellent starter of Pan- ther plays. Offensively, he centered the ball without error and charged hard and low. Defensively, never a man broke through when he backed up the line. Due to his peerless work throughout the season he was selected for the pivot po- sition on the All-State second team. SAM DAVIS 5' 10 -Half-Back-165 lbs. This versatile athlete, a star in every sport, served the football team as an ex- ceedingly valuable half. He was a triple threat man doing most ol' Plant's pass- ing. He has already proved his worth in other sports this year and we're ex- pecting even greater things next. Davis is a four letter winner. DICK McKAY 5' 10 -Quarterback-140 lbs. Flashy quarterbacks like Cutie are few and far between. This light, but fast, expert broken field runner and field general was responsible for many of our touchdowns. Dick was captain in more games during this season than any other player. Our loss will be a Florida gain. 1929 e Panther DICK CUNNINGHAM 5' 10 -Fullback-170 lbs. When Plant needed two yards for Iirst down it was always Cunningham who was called upon and always he managed to cover the needed yardage. A plung- ing, driving, good punting, man, who showed great ability backing the line of defense. Missouri will certainly be shown a thing or two when he arrives next fall. STUART KEITH 5' 10 --End-140 lbs. Watch that black-haired boy do it, Coach would storm when things weren't going right in practice. And of course the boy alluded to was Stew. He played a constantly stellar game at end and in the heat of battle, never lost his head. What more can be said? JIMMIE McGREGOR 5' 11 -Quarterback-145 lbs. McGregor was our ace-in-the-hole. He was not worn down when others could fill his place, and when called upon he came through. He got away a num- ber of times inthe Palm Beach game for substantial gains. He will continue his good work with us next year. McGregor also is a four letter winner. GUY TOPH 6' 1 -Tackle-197 lbs. Not 'only did Guy leave footprints on the sands of time but on many of his opposing linemen as well. Poppa played a root-hog-or-die brand of foot- ball that marked his as an All-State tackle. He is lost by graduation and will be greatly missed next year. ARTHUR DERVAES 5' 8 -End-138 lbs. Like the mounted police Tooka al- ways got his man. A veteran, he han- dled his assignment in a way that made him a constant threat. His specialty was smearing end runs before interfer- ence was formed. He'l1 see service again next year. JOE BEATTY 5' 7 -Halfback-140 lbs. ' Joe has without a doubt more drive, courage, spirit, and fight for his size than anyone you've seen. He gets knocked up, down, and about, and Seems never to be injured. Joe's a very fast back and will prove a great value to Plant during the approaching season. 1929 l L A-xi. . 3' xv .khf , W '- A i 'Mrk The Panther BILL McNEVlN 6' 1 -Halfback-168 lbs. That tall, gawky, bony McNevin could always be depended upon for interfer- ing, blocking, tackling, or snagging passes. A sweeping end run with Billy back always meant a good gain. He was handicapped throughout most of the sea- son with injuries. Billy is thought highly of by all who know him and will cer- tainly be missed next year. GEORGE DAVIS 5' 9 -Guard-165 lbs. That comical boy, who ordinarily has not a serious thought in his head, can some down to real business in playing football. A spectator undergoes great difficulty in following him during the play, but when the whistle blows he emerges from the bottom of the pile, victorious. His graduation will leave a vacancy hard to fill. HOLMES KIRKLAND 5' 9 -End-150 lbs. Holmes is a very promising end. His speedy rise showed that he possessed many fine qualities. He was fast, re- ceived many passes, and made all plays 'or the advantage of the team. Kirkland will be of great aid to Plant next year. J. T, CHANCEY 5' 11 -Tackle-1,70 lbs. Chancey was a very dependable play- er, serving Plant for his second season as tackle. He could break through the opposing linesman or open a hole with equal ease. He's made of just the stuff that's essential to every good team. GSWALD CORNELIUS 5' 10 -Tackle-202 lbs. Although slow, Ossie boasts of mak- ing the mile in one hour, thirteen min- utes, nine and three-tenths seconds, he's a cracking good tackle. When he played, his motto, They shall not pass, was lived up to, right to the letter. No one passed his side of the line. Ossie will be back next year. He is earnest in his work and will give Plant splcndid service next year. TOMMY CRESSLER 5' 9 -Guard-160 lbs. A lighting guard who was in the thick of the fight all the time. It was Tommy's last year and he gave his best for the team. He will be greatly missed next year. 1929 - I S n The Panther VERNON LASTINGER 5' 10 -Guard-155 lbs. Vernon made his best year by showing up up fine in every game. His work was steady throughout the season and his de- parture will leave a wide gap between center and tackle. LEON SOUTHERLAND 5' 10 -Center-145 lbs. Southerland, though this was his first year on the team, has made an enviable record. He played a smashing 'brand of football in the center of the line and could always be depended upon to take care of his assignment in worthy fashion. -O. Elder. MALCOLM MICKLER 5' 10 -Guard-150 lbs. Malcolm's first year at football was a good one. He played a neat game at guard and carried out all his assign- ments well. Malcolm will continue his good work for Plant again next season. PAINE KELLY 5' 8 -Fullback-137 lbs. Off tackle-Kelly back! That's the signal that got 'eml It's a mystery how that light back manages to get through that line and for a gain every time. Af- ter practice Kelly waited for the last one and gave them a lift home. Paine will return to Plant next year. DICK BALCOM 5' 11 -Fullback--145 lbs. Although Balcom was shifted from end to fullback, his good playing was not affected in the least. He played hard every minute he was in and will be a reliable man on the team next year. LABAN LIVELY 5' 11 -Manager-145 lbs. Laban served us both as player and manager. A hard tackling guard he was, playing as hard in the practices as in the games. As manager, no one noticed how it was done but they depended on Laban to have what they wanted when they wanted it. 1929 The Panther s-n .iq-v' BASEBALL TEAM Sam Davis Stuart Keith Paul Grigsby Gene Montayhe Arthur Dervaes Paine Kelly Sol Jacobs J M 0. . Jules Dervaes Arthur Mansell Homer Roberts ames C 'legol BASEBALL The baseball team, so far, has done well. Practice was begun iinniediately after the West Coast Basketball Toizrnament, and the team has now whipped into shape. In Arthur Dervaes and Sam Ilavis we have two excellent pitchers and also two heavy hitters. The infield is composed ol' Keith, a reliable first baseman, McGregor, who can be depended on for a good hit, Mansell, another 'l'y Cobb at the bases, and Sol Jacobs, our conscientious third baseman. In the outfield we have Jules IJer'.':ies, Gene Montallye. and Paine Kelly. Grigsby and Roberts have been both pitching and catching, while Cosgrove has been showing up well to practice. Plant and Hillsboro will iight for the right to represent our district in the state baseball tournanlent. The score of the first Hillsboro game was 8-7, in eleven innings. Many feel that with the excellent material available Plant should have had a championship team. The season started off fine Plant winning the first two games only to lose the third to Bradenton. This Brad- ton game was the closest of the season lasting for three extra periods. Our team then won from Plant City. St. Pete beat the Panthers 17-12 the next game. A winning fever seized the Panthers as they won six games in a row. Plant easily defeated Palmetto and also managed to win over Sarasota. The victory over Hillsboro came next with a 27-23 score. The Tarpon Springs five was easily defeated on their home court. A game with Palmetto here was forfeited and the second game with Sara- sota also was not played. Bradenton, a once victorious team, was beaten, but Plant could not defeat St. Pete on the second trial. February 23, for the first time in the history of Plant High bas- ketball we lost to Hillsboro. It was a Very close game, 21-20. S' In the tournament our Panthers defeated Clearwater and Alva by very large scores. However, successive tournament games proved too much for them and the team was put out by Hillsboro, but Plant made a Hne showing. Sam Davis, that ever fighting center with those long arms, was high point man of the tournament, scoring 45 points. Sam was picked for the West Coast League as well as the West Coast Conference team. He was, indeed, the most valuable man to Plant High during the school year. 1928-29. Grady Lester is a running guard who not only holds down opponents scores but also drops the ball in from the center of the court as well. Lester certainly did well to be chosen on the West Coast Conference team his sophomore year. McGregor and Keith made excellent forwards. It was funnier than watching a circus clown, to see Stuart look one way and pass the ball the other to Jimmie. Jimmie had a good eye for the basket and always managed to be where the opponents expected him least. James Beasley, as ever, was a steady consistent player. His long arms and legs could certainly fly when two opponents came into his territory. 1929 The Panther D TRACK TEAM Joe Beatty Holmes Kirkland EZEQYDEEZII James McGregor Sidney Fleming Malcolm Poage A track team was formed this year for the first time, the members being selected from the inter-class meet. Class meets were held the last of March, with Setzer, Sophomore, Davis, Junior, and Fleming, Senior, winners. The following week an inter- class meet was held. The Juniors won and the first Plant High Track Records were established. The first school meet was a dual meet with Brooksville in which Plant took all points possible. In the West Coast meet at St. Pete, Plant placed fourth. Sam Davis won the mile within two seconds of record and also easily took the half mile. Two third places were won, one by the half-mile relay team and the other by Oscar Elder in the 440 yard run. The team journeyed to Gainesville to participate in the Florida State High School meet. , Sam Davis scored eight points, winning the mile over a large field of entrants and placing second in the half mile. Oscar Elder tied for third in the 440 yard dash. The mile relay team copped fourth in their event, completing Plant's scoring. The total of 105 points placed Plant seventh in the entire meet. Earlier in the season a two mile cross-country run was held. Sam Davis stepped out to an easy win with Ellis Mickler second and Sid Fleming third. lt was a great track team for the first year and we hope track will play a larger part in our athletics in the future. FENCING Fencing was added to Plant's list of sports this year and while but a few took up this relic of Courtier days which is becoming so popular in other parts of the country, we had a team composed of Bill Hunter, Charles Zickgraff, Paul Dorfmuller, Jack Irving, Bill Jordan and Phillip Smoak, all of whom had fenced before. This team accepted Hillsborough's challenge for a match, and while our opponents had received more instruction and practice, won two out of four matches and a draw in the final. In the return match Hillsborough was given the decision. We have some good matreial in Plant and hope next year to see more take up fencing. 1929 The Panther fr' 9 GOLF TEAM Russell Perry Jack Taylor Robert Harper Frank Alexander Victor Yeats We are very proud oi' our Golf Team because it brought to Plant our Hrst State Championship. SWIMMING AND TENNIS Swimming and tennis held little sway in Plant High School athletics during the past year. A tennis tournament was held and a few matches played. Mr. Underwood, of the faculty, served as tennis coach. Jack Harris and Gene Montayne were awarded tennis letters. Swimming practice was started but soon abandoned. May the future lovers of these sports have more successful seasons. The Panther TERRY GIL, Captain-Forward-Terry was high point girl on the team and will he missed next fall. MARY CARSWELL-Forward - 'l' e a ni work is Mary's specialty. Great things are expected of her next year. DOROTHEA RIGHT-Jump Centerfxil- though this is Dorothea's first year out for varsity she has shown up well and can always be depended on. ELLEN ANDERSON-Running Center' - Ellen has speed, passes well and never stops figthing. ISOBEL McCORD-Guard-Isobel is an all round player, cool and always alert. Few forwards were able to score on her. She is another of the Letter girls. RHEA GALLACHER-Guard -Hand i- capped by her small size, Rhea made up for it in speed and fighting spirit. DOROTHY HENSLEY-Forward - D ot did not see much action this year but whenever she did get her chance, she made things hum. ELMA COPELAND-Side Center- Elma was the smallest but one of the fastest on the team. VVe expect lots of her next, year. STELLA GURNEY--Guard-f-Stella could always out jump an opponent and was always breaking the opposing defense. 1929 The Panther H-rfq-v' GIRLS' LETTER CLUB MRS. Looking back. over the ' season's activities, we can see what I a success it has been. With the beginning of school in September came the first sport on the program-volley ball. More interest was taken in it than last , year. An inter-class series of three games each was played. the Jun- ior's coming out ahead. Next on the sport calendar came tennis. About fifty girls signed up for the inter-class and school tournament. Most of these matches were played off at the Davis Island courts. In the inter- class tournament,KMary Carswell, Celestina McKay and Terry Gil came out, Sophomore, Junior and Senior champion respectively, while Terry Gil defeated Cuca McKay for the School champion- ship. I With the beginning of the sec- ond semester came a change in coach, Miss Edith Lindsay left for Columbia University, and her place was taken by Mrs. Caroline Gilmour. Everybody wanted to play bas- I ketball when they saw the cute uniforms and folks were all pepped up for the big game with our ole' rival, Hillsborough. The girls - were all ready to avenge the two defeats of last year, but alas! Hillsborough was unable to get up a. team for lack of equipment. The disappointment was somewhat made up for by Mrs. Gilmour securing games with the Y. VV. and the Ideal Team. The Plant girls were defeated by both teams but received lots of experience and practice from these games. With the putting away of uniforms, bruised knees and with fond hopes of a grand team next year so as to beat Hillsborough, thoughts were turned to the newly laid out diamond. The baseball team was divided up into Golds and Blacks. Isobel McCord was elected captain of the Gold and Dorothea Right captain of the Blacks. Three games were played between them and the Golds easily took the three of them. Track came next, the winners of first, second and third places in gym classes being eligible to enter the meet which took place May 13. Because of lack of funds the swimming team was not sent to Winter Haven to compete in the State meet, but nevertheless, great interest was taken and a class meet was held. Fencing was introduced to Plant girls this ,semester and promises to become one of the popular sports in coming years. Thus closes another athletic calendar for Plant girls.
