Forward - Why was our school song chosen for the art work in the 1957 Gwinner ? When one sings the school song, he does not only sing words, these words have deep meaning, they stress loyalty, learning, experienced, and success. Mrs. Haynes 4 For the outstanding service they have given to our school and community, we, respectfully dedicate this annual to Mr. and Mrs. George D. Gilbert. Mr. Gilbert was superintendent of Forsyth Township Schools for eight years. During his adminstration our school was first accredited by the North Central Association and school children from Austin and Little Lake were brought to Gwinn. Until his retirement in 1952, he served as regional director of the State Department of Public Instruction. He is a member of the State and National Educational Associations and was the first president of the county district. He also is a member of Phi-Delta-Kappa, a national educational honorary society. He has taken an active part in community affairs serving in Community Council, Lions Club, American Legion, Sports- men, County Board of Education, and is a member of First Methodist Church. Mrs. Gilbert has been active in the 4-H Club, First Meth- odist Church, where she is superintendent of the Sunday School, and is a charter member of the Womens' Study Club. 5 LEFT TO RIGHT: Ed Nordeen—secretary; William Marjomaki—president; Norman Hocking—trustee; Don Nyqulst—treasurer; 6 Harold Anderson—trustee; William Garrett—Superintendent of Schools. Our Superintendent Says... In extending congratulations to the members of this class, may I impress upon you the potential you possess as an adult citizen. You are important to this community, for you are a product of the community. You are impor- tant to the school of this community, for you represent what can be accomplished for the children of this com- munity by preparation in living through education. You are important to yourselves, for you hold within your- selves the key to your future living. You have a mission in the future. What you do or what you do not do may determine the course of history. Whatever you do, be a credit to yourselves and the institution from which you graduated. William G. Garrett Superintendent Our School Board Acts MR. HEMMILA During his first year in Gwinn, Mr. Hemmila has acquired many new friends. In addition to his duties as principal, he conducts a conservation club, a safety patrol, and is manager at basketball games. Your graduation from high school Is merely a step up the ladder to success, so do not stop there; but continue your progress in whatever you endeavor to do. Never let the trials of life defeat you but consider them as a challenge and have faith in your abilities. Mr. Hemmila, Principal MR. WILLS Directing the senior play and acting as Senior Class advisor, Mr. Wills also wcrks at the table at basketball games. A jack of trades, need we say more? Working with you as your advisor this past year has been a happy experience for me. As your advisor, I would like to leave the final thought with you. Remember, that it is not always a question of how much you know but rather what use you make of your knowledge. Your place in life won't be decided by what you have acquired or how well you have trained but by what you are and what you actually do. This indefatigable class has taken part in every activity that Gwinn High offers. Many of the class were members of the band, basketball, baseball and track teams, the Gwinner and Annual staffs, and were also members of the glee club and the varsity cheerleading squad. In February eleven of the class were inducted into the National Honor Society. A Pep-and-Snake Dance with a bonfire added its spark to the year and placed another highlight in the seniors' career. Several seniors attended Northern Senior Day on March 11. A suspense-packed drama, House on Fallen Leaf Road, was presented by the class on April 16-17. Senior Skip Day, baccalaureate and commencement concluded the reign of the 1957 Sen- iors. We take our places among the intelligentsia, and we wish to express our sincere ap- preciation to our teachers and advisers for guiding us toward a bright future. The Paul Goodman Orchestra played in a fairyland dream. Punch was served, also glass slippers and hats were given as favors. Sept. 4 . . Sept. 11 . . . Sept. 21 . . Sept. 25 . . Sept. 27 . . . FLAHERTY The junior play adviser, sophomore adviser, and ticket seller at basketball games is a typical librarian at heart. '■$',, ; MRS. HAYNES Her commercialists are a happy group. It's a pleasure to watch the speedy progress of the Annual and Gwinner. Being Journalism, Annual, Gwinner, and Honor Society advis- er, besides being responsible for all pro- grams, selling tickets at basketball games and assistant sophomore adviser, doesn't give her too much time at home. To wear the society's pin a student must, in the eyes of the faculty, satisfy four requir- ments—scholarship, leadership, character, and service. The upper-third of the Senior Class is eligible for membership. The Formal Induction and Candle Lighting Service of members was held on February 13, and Dr. Wilbur West from NMC was the guest speaker. A luncheon was served for the new members, their parents, and the faculty. The NHS conducted a Spelling Bee on March 13, presented perfect attendance awards, and held a reunion banquet. An organization which holds the admiration of everyone, duly deserving its fine name, is our Gwinn High School band. Hard work is the number one aspect for achievement, and the band members and Mr. Bennetts are certainly to be commended on this. The band had a busy schedule this year of playing for basketball games, attending the Band Festival in Iron Mountain, giving its annual Spring Concert, and playing for Graduation. MR. BENNETTS Playing the piano and reading books about the Civil war are the two things that Mr. Bennetts enjoys besides teaching. There seems little correlation between the two, but who knows, maybe General Grant played the piano, too. He is often found in the band room giving section rehearsals. Besides directing the band at all the home basketball games, he has taken the band and glee club out of Gwinn for perfor- mances. He is also the freshman class adviser. 47 FRENCH HORNS BARITONE J. Composed of fifteen girls of grades 9-12, the Glee Club provides music for the Spring Band Concert, Baccalaureate, and Commencement.
