Lockers were decorated and the halls began to have an orange and black glow of streamers and signs. Wednesday was Tiger Day. Everyone wore orange, black, and white with sunglasses and bandanas. We were plan- ning to chew up those Goldbugs. Thurs- day was Jogging Suit Day ' Even the teachers participated in this event. Friday exploded Everyone wore orange and black again. This was Spirit Day. Many were covered from head to toe with rib- bons, buttons, and tatoos. Many girls were wearing their mums. During the pep rally at 2:30, the Homecoming Queen and candidates were announced, along with the winners of the Baby Face con- test. Jacki and Mick were crowned as the Baby Faces. The door decoration winner was Mr. Wilgus' second hour class. The sophomores got lucky and won the hall decoration and spirit contest. Congrats! At 3 p.m. the pep rally continued downtown. This small European country is called Belgium. It's divided in two parts which speak two dif- ferent languages. One half speaks Dutch (or Netherlands language) and the other half French. I live in the French speaking part at about seventeen miles from the capital, Bruxelles. Many of you have asked how did I arrive here. I didn't choose it at all, but I am glad to be here with you. I came here with an organization called YES (Youth Exchange Service), who tried to find for me the family who would fit the best with me and my in- terests. In November 1985 I applied to become an exchange stu- dent in the USA. Finally, on June 13th, I received a letter saying that the Stephens family (Tom, Phyllis, Diane, Vicki Jo and Tamra Kay) would be happy to take care of me for a whole year. I couldn't believe it. This letter made me happy but scared me at the same time. The twenty-second of August, 1986, I had to prepare myself for a very exciting but long and tiring day; it was the departure for the big adventure. After I had been traveling for twenty-one hours on several airplanes, I met for the first time my new host family in Amarillo. It was a very exciting moment although quite embarrass- ing, too, because we didn't know each other. I hardly could realize that my dreams had come true ... I was in America ... I love my new host family. They are so nice and sweet, and they take really good care of me. They don't give me time to be bored of Cuymon life or to be homesick. I would like to thank them very much. Life here is quite different than the one I had in Belgium. I have tried a lot of new things like piano, golf, fair, 4-H and living on a farm. But there are some other differences between both coun- tries, for example, the scenery and the climate. Here there are fewer trees and much less water. The people are so excited when it's raining here, while I think it's quite normal. Everything gives an impression of being huge. The people here seem to be much more friendly. The school system also differs. I think that it's much easier — only six different subjects instead of eleven, easier tests, and less homework. The contacts with the teachers are often more relaxed. There are several things I enjoy better at school here and that we don't have in Belgium, such as extracurricular activities like Medical Careers and French Club. We just go to school for learning and studying and not for extra activities or pleasure. We don't have any school team sports. If we want to practice a sport, it's not with the school but with a special sports club. I admire your school spirit. The beautiful cheerleaders and pep rallies are new for me. I have also enjoyed my first experience with the school yearbook. Being on the yearbook staff goes along well with one of my aspirations, which is photography. I look for- ward to a new experience at the end of the year — the prom and graduation ceremony. I enjoy my experience and encourage others who are interested in becoming an exchange student because it's worthwhile for yourself and your personality. You have to learn to deal with new situations. You meet a lot of new and interesting people and you learn about a new culture. It's very interesting. My sister, Anne, (20) was also an exchange student two years ago 70 miles north of New York. But I am sure that we will have very different views about the USA. Finally, I would like to thank all my friends, teachers and new family for letting me become a part of your society. It has never been easy, we must confess But we've almost made it there, growing strong and tall. Friends are always there when you need them most. They aren't afraid to be your leaning post. We've made our truest and dearest friends We've placed our deepest secrets in their hearts. We've learned the hardships of broken hearts to mend And pledged that our friendships will never part. Friends share special times whether good or bad. They'll stand at your side even when you're feeling sad. We know about life, learning right from wrong We will soon begin working toward our new ambitions. Although the new pathway will be steep and long We will make it with the right decisions. Friends are sure to listen and know just what to say. They can keep you laughing so you'll have a better day. We've picked up our broken pieces along the way We've shed our tears of laughter and sorrow. It has been quite an experience, we must say The Senior Class of 1987, the future of tomorrow. So guess who has the privilege? Students. Yes, that goes for me, too. We, the pupils, sit in class waiting ... waiting for the bell to end class and hoping not to have any homework BUT the teacher has news for us ... do this, do that, be neat; and if the work isn't finished by tomorrow, there is going to be a big, fat 0 in the grade book. Oh NO! What am I going to do? I have play practice after school, my dentist's appoint- ment at 5:00; I have a meeting at 7:30, and my relatives are coming to dinner. I'll just have to do it in the morning before school .. . BUT WAIT ... the big dance is on Fri- day and I have to be at school at 8:00 to help decorate the gym. The pressure's on. I just don't have time for anything. Finally, I have a solution ... 3 o'clock in the morning has to be the only time for doing homework; is it not? Oh, I forgot about those who need beauty sleep ... sorry, that's your problem, not mine. 44 Jim Wiggin Lanna Wilson Crystal Witten Denise Watson Jason Webster Michael Wells Pam West Ivan Whipple Gena Whitehead IN MEMORY OF THOMAS CORY WATKINS Tom was a dear friend that I loved very much. He helped many people with his touch. His laugh was unique and seemed so kind, It was enough to blow your mind. His life helped many through trial and hard time, And I was where I just called him mine. Hurting people was not his game. He loved everyone just the same. He was friend to all, a countless number. Here and gone just like thunder. His face resembled class and style. It was expressed most by his smile. God had a plan and took Tom away. And I still do not know why today. He was killed that night at twelve-eleven, And he is now with his Father, God in Heaven. — Jimbo George Thomas Cory Watkins was killed in a car acci- dent on June 21, 1986. They started out strong and kept their momentum all the way through the season. They took us all the way to the State Championship for the first time in the history of Guymon High School. They made the Seniors' last year even more memorable than ever with their hearts of gold and their souls that never stopped fighting. They gave hope and high expectations to those who still have miles to go. Let's not forget the wonderful fans who stayed behind us no matter what. They gave courage and spirit in times that some might have given up. Thanks guys for a fantastic season and the greater bond you have brought between the school and the community. Lance Swanson was one of the main factors in this year's terrific foot- ball season. As a result, he was chosen to play in the All-State game.
