Happiness Is Cheering for a Victory Say girls, who is that good looking friend you have there? These Junior High Pep Club representatives work enthusiastically to keep that great Tiger spirit alive. 155 % Joy Is Being in P.E. 156 The GHS choir officers are from Left To Right: Jennie Dain, Secretary; Sheri Ralstin, Treas- urer; Randy Caddell, President; Jami Martin, Reporter; and Brent Gibson, Vice-President. A fine group of men's voices make up the BOYS GLEE CLUB. Their singing proves them to be hard working and GREAT!!! Sweet as the voice of an angel are words that describe the GIRLS GLEE CLUB. Happy as a lark are these four GHS All-State Choir members. To be in the All-State Choir is a very high honor, but to have four choir members to make All-State Choir is excellent. They are: Randy Caddell, Randy Jones, Janet Bemett, and Debbie McKay. 158 Jeannie Philippe-Attendant Karen Keith Sheri Ralstin-Attendant 1973-74 Choir Sweetheart W e Sing for Joy in G. H. S. Choir The Guymon High School Choir in all its splendor is under the direction of Mrs. Juanita Davis. The Choir is well noted for its fine presentations presented to the community and for its high achievements in district and state competition. Guymon is proud to have such an outstanding choir! 159 “Fiddler on the Roof ’ Presented by GHS Choir FIDDLER ON THE ROOF” The time is 1905, on the eve of the Russian Revolutionary Period, when the Jewish people were chased out of Russia. Tradition is the main theme for FIDDLER ON THE ROOF . Tradition means never changing the folk- ways for the people of the little village of Anatevka. As in the opening speech: A fiddler on the roof. Sounds crazy, but here in our little village of Anatevka, you might say every- one of us is a fiddler on the roof, trying to scratch out a pleasant simple tune without breaking Ms neck. It isn't easy. You might say, why do we stay up there if it is so dangerous? We stay because Anatevka is our home . . . And how do we keep our balance? That I can tell you in a word . . . TRADITION! Tevye, a dairyman, and his wife Golde have five daughters. They are: Tzeitel, Hodel, Chava, Shprintze, and Bielke. It was traditional for the parents to choose husbands for their daughters to marry. In this story, Yente is known as the matchmaker. She selects different men for the daughters to marry and presents them to Golde, the mother, for her approval. The daughters have different ideas about the choice of husbands, and with the encouragement of a college student named Perchik, the daughters rebel and choose their own husbands. This starts the change--for breaking the rules of their traditions. Perchikgoes so far as to teach the daughters a new dance which he learned at a large Russian city. All through the story the Jewish religious beliefs are brought out over and over. One of Tevyes daughters falls in love with a Russian soldier, a Cossack, and because of religion, Tevye disowns her. At the wedding of Tzeitel and Motel, Russian authorities come in and wreck” the wedding scene. The Jewish people are forced to leave Anatevka. The story ends with Tevye's family and Ms friends packing their poor belongings and getting ready to leave their beloved village of Anatevka. f r CAST Tevye . . . Randy Caddell Motel. . . . . And where are your daughters? Outside, No? Good! Such diamonds, such jewels! You'll see Golde. I'll find everyone of them husband. But you shouldn't be so picky. Even the worst hus- band, God Forbid, is better than no husband!!! RebTevye, I'm not talking about your new milk cow, I'm talking about your daughter Tzeitel. I see her in my butcher shop every Thursday and I must say, she's made a good impression on me, a very good impression! Besides, I LIKE her! What do you think? Lachaim! Reb Lazar looks for one last drop in the bottle in the bar while dancing to the song of To Life! And right in the middle of the dream, in walks your Grandmother Tzeitel! My Grandmother Tzeitel? How did she look? Well, for a woman who's been dead thirty years, she looked very good. Bottle dancing in Tzeitel and Motel's wed- ding. In the dream Fruma Sarah and Grandmother Tzeitel sing, How can you allow it? How, how can you let your daughter take my place, live in my house, and wear my keys, clothes, pearls, hoooowwww!! Tevye and Golde sing Sunrise, Sunset Is this the little girl I carried, is this the little boy at play? I don't remember growing older, when did they? Well, Perchik, I think you are asking me to marry you. In a theoretical sense, yes! As Hodel prepares to catch the train for Siberia where she will meet Perchik, she sings, How can I hope to make you understand, Why I do what I do, Why I must travel to a distant land, Far from the home I love. Golde darling! You'll never guess where I'm going! All my life I've wanted to go there, andnowl'm going. Where do you think? Of course, the Holy Land in Jerus- elum. And I'll arrange matches, no? It's my mission! Mazeltove! To Mr. Toler we give a big Thanks! Our musicals would not be com- plete without the assistance of Mr. Toler and the Pit Band. To Mom Davis, we give a special thank-you of apprecia- tion! She is one person who truly deserves a lot of praise, for it is through her long hours of devotion in working with the musical that it was the success it was. She has won deeply the respect of each and every one of us. Thanks, Mom ! Our deepest gratitude goes to Mrs. H. C. Hitch, Jr., who spent many hours coaching and rehearsing the choir members in preparation for the Jewish Peasant folk dances. This is her thirteenth year as our choreographer. Happiness Is Blowing 164 Your Own Horn 165 Fine, efficient officers lead the Junior High Band in all of their activities. They are: Teresa Patterson, Kenny Sizelove, Cindy Kiddoo, and Debi Martindale. 166 Happiness is evident when the Junior High Stage Band is performing. They are a great little group. Happiness Is Representing Junior High 167 For the drum major, Jerry Ward and the twirlers, Leslie Jackson, Lisa Holly, Shelli Martin, and Nancy Fawcett, leading the Junior High Band is great fun and an honor. Happiness Is Being a Part Representing Oklahoma Guymon High School Band, the Pride of the Queen City of the Panhandle, received the highest honor ever awarded them when they traveled to Pasadena, California and performed in the Rose Bowl Parade 1974 representing the state of Oklahoma. Among their other past accomplishments are the following: outstanding concert band. Six Flags over Texas Musical Festival; outstanding concert band, Tri- State Music Festival, Enid, Oklahoma; Kansas State Honors Band, Emporia State Teacher's College, Emporia, Kansas. This outstanding band has also won many awards in marching and sightreading. They have also represented Oklahoma at the World's Fair in Montreal, Canada and the Lion's International Convention in Las Vegas, Nevada. We salute you G. H. S. Band! 169 The talented twirlers of G.H. S. Band-Betty Lobit, Karen Lynn, Deb- bie McKay, and Terri Carter are some of the most important mem- bers of the marching band. Their smiles help to lead this organiza- tion to their many honors past, pre- sent, and future. Everyone Loves Many people seem sur- prised to see a sophomore leading the band. But members of the class of '76 knew all along that Mary Beth Cole, Drum Majorette, was the only person for the job. Great job, Mary Beth! the Great WHAT A BAND! On many of the nights spent playing at the ballgames, Dicky Bryan, along with the other members of the band, concentrated intently on music, marching, and mis- chievious conduct. 170 G.H.S. Band! Kim Wirtz, Tammy Stewart, Jami Mar- tin, Lisa Ward, Denise Nelson, and Deb- bie Vestal are but six of the eight tire- less flag girls. DeAnn Pierce and Lynn Rollins are no doubt out somewhere work- ing endlessly on their routines. No wonder they're smiling! They are, without a doubt, the very best flag girls the band has ever had since this is our first year having them. Robert Yocham-President and Pat Adams- Vice President fearlessly propel the band forward with the help of the fantastic four: Denise Nelson-Junior Representative, Lisa Ward-Secretary, Debbie Vestal-Sophomore Representative, and Bob Jett-Senior Rep- resentative. Is it any wonder that the band manages as great as it does with officers like these? Any dance would turn out great with the help of theG. H. S. Stage Band. Mr. Toler is in charge of this great organization. A special tribute goes to this band for being Outstanding Stage Band for the state of Oklahoma, 1973-74. 171 Who wouldn't be smiling, even in the Oklahoma snow, at such an honor as being selected as All-District Band members!!! Not many people can boast of this talent, and G. H. S. proved extra-lucky, or extra blessed, and they had 20 members of their band chosen. Besides those too busy to be inthe picture, Cosette Holland and Sandy McClung, these bright and happy people are: Vicki Bennett, Robert Yocham, Rhonda Summers, Dicky Bryan, Jill Shields, Randy Jones, Bonnie Mason, John Smith, Jeanette Bamum. Stand- ing: Debbie McKay, Gail Shaffer, Karen Lynn, Mary Ann Rabum, Carol Dunkerson, Pat Adams, Terri Yates, Marlene Kauffman, and Betty Lobit. CONGRATULATIONS!!! 172 Unusual Talent Sometimes Pays Off Join the celebrationi What are we celebra- ting? Why, Pat Adams, Karen Lynn, and Cosette Holland shouldn't mind telling of their great honor. We proudly introduce our All-State band members. Besides being adept at the saw, Pat is extremely good at saxophone, while Karen and Cosette, in concert season, try their hand At french horn and baritone sax, respectively. Book them for a hootnanny and be proud to have such talent represented in the Guymon High School Band! Congrat- ulations ! ! 173 Stuco Faces Are Happy Faces Roger Gribble finds himself surrounded by females in his office of vice-president. His ideas are fresh and new, and no one is quite like our Roger. How can someone manage to be contently happy while balancing the school on her shoulders? No one but our own Student Council president, Jennie Dain does her job so sweetly and efficiently. Catching Carolyn Mingle at one of her not-too often free moments, she still has her mind on STUCO. As our treasurer and candy and coke machine supervisor, Carolyn manages to keep busy. A lot of bookwork is needed for the hard job of Stu- dent Council secretary. Cyndy Gibson is one of the very hard workers who does her job with a smile. 174 Mrs. Lee is one of our student council spon- sors. With a smile on her face, she makes some of the small chores of STUCO fun. Aha! Caught in the act is Mr. Southwick. I guess working as student council sponsor has made him thirsty. This year the members of STUCO have been very busy. They started out the year with a back-to-school program for the parents. In the middle of each semester, they had a film fes- tival where they served free popcorn and cokes. In the second semester they sponsored twirp days, a variety show, and earth week. In ad- dition to these activities, they sold pictures on the library bulletin board. At Christmas Time, the student council sponsored a can goods drive. These goods, shown by Becky Bauer, Brent Gibson, Jeanette Barnum, Christy Wood, Mary Beth Hall- ford, and Carolyn Mingle, were given to underpriviliged children. 175 The coke and candy machines provide refreshment for hungry and thirsty kids. Just be sure and don't get caught between classes! These are the STUCO representatives for the Jun- ior Class. They are always energetic, enthusias- tic, and effervecent. At the beginning of die year, Student Council spon- sored aback-to-school picnic. Is Ivan Clark stuckup a tree again? With friends like his, it looks like he'll be stuck up there for quite a while. 176 I wonder what Bruce could have seen that has put him in such a daze. Stuco Isn’t A ll Work Here is the famous room that won the title of 'Best Decor- ated Room for Christmas'. It was Mrs. Butts' second hour class that put in all the hard work. 177 The Senior Honor Society Members that performed the Initia- tion Assembly for the new members are Row 1: John Smith, Bryan Lee, Garylvie, Randy Caddell.
