D. THE CLASS 0F i959 Brad sh aw, Spon so r. After two years of hard work and study, the class of '58 - '59 reached their goal as nearly 'l4O senior boys and girls began their reign at G. H.S. on September second of the year nineteen hundred and fifty-eight. Chosen leaders were Mike Darrow, president, Nowmen Glenn, vice-pres- ident, Bob Gerlach, treasurer, and Patsy Sanders, secretary. Linda Chappell was appointed class report- er a little later in the year. Arthur A. Kroeger and Mrs. A. D. Bradshaw served faithfully as the class- sponsors. Seniors representing their class in student government were Elton LeHew, Student Council president, Mary Beth Adams and Janie Hoag, Student Council's secretary and treasurer, respectively, and Sam Gray, Student Council reporter. The senior class was also well- represented all year in every field of athlet-ics as there were twenty-two brawny seniors lasting the football season, and six Seniors on the start- ing basketball ten. Seniors also sup- ported wrestling, track, and baseball. Several of the boys were placed on the all-conference team with Gary Cole making the all-state football team and Charles Townsend getting honorable mention. Yes, seniors were found in every athletic event during the school year of '58 - '59. Girls' Staters and Boys' Stat- ers from this class were Sharon Lillie Barrows, Janie Hoag, Mary Beth Adams, Sam Gray, Perry Mikles, Gary Reid, Elton LeHew, Phil Owens, Gary Cole, and Bob Gerlach. Jerry Haws, Robert Zelley, Perry Mikles, Babs Henke Russell, and Mary Beth Adams attended the Oklahoma High- school Institute at Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, Oklahoma, while Bob Gerlach and Elton LeHew traveled to Evanston, Illinois for the National Highschool Institutes at Northwestern University where Bob was elected to receive second place key for outstanding work. Several top F. F. A. honors in the state were won by several F. F. A. senior boys. Another honor, the D. A. R. Medal Achievement Award, was won by Janie Hoag. Of course, the seniors had their share of fun during the year. The senior kiddie party on March 3, the senior play, and the iunior-senior prom were all top events on the sen- ior's fun list. As we all know, All good things must come to an end. And so it was the senior class of '58-'59, donning their caps and gowns for commence- ment in May, bid farewell to the dear old halls of G. H. S. THE CLASS Oli I960 With the student leadership of Kenneth Brouchoud, President, Karen Kroeger, Vice- President, Linda Gibson, Secretary, and Billy Dodd, Treasurer, l56 students bravely faced their Junior year. They elected as their spon- sors Mrs. Vinita Bierer and Col. Charles O. Henry. The Student Council Representatives serv- ing during the year were: Lindo Snyder, Georgia Belle Wilson, Charles Mood and Jerry Mathis. Though a new experience, the Junior class this year was very active toward raising money for their Junior-Senior Prom. Among the many fund-raising activities undertolcen were those of: Record Album sales, Dances, o movie and the class play which was presented in February. The class felt at the end of the year that all their efforts had been worth while, as with the coming of May, they enioyed the long-awaited prom and banquet. s l N Q 1 . Silva, Sponsor. THE CLASS OF l96l Surviving the novelty of finding their clas- ses and meeting their teachers, the Sophomores began a happy ancl exciting year as the largest of the three classes. The students elected to lead the class were Don Ringrose, President, Gene Johnson, Vice- President, Clauddia Ellis, Secretary, Earl Winn, Treasurer, and Susan Rush, Reporter. Miss Betty Boles and Sergeant William Silva were elected to guide the officers and class as sponsors. Connie Murray, Judith Chappell, Jimmy Pritchett, and John Niles were elected by their classmates to serve on the Student Council. The Sophomores eagerly took an active part in all the activities and social events. The girls became pledges and later members of organiza- tions such as Pep Club ancl F. H. A., while the boys were lost in a world of athletics and cars. With the end of their Sophomore year in sight, the members of the class realize that their long-dreamed hopes and plans for high school are reality. Now they eagerly await the next two years when they will become Juniors and finally Seniors. Different members of the Assembly committee took part in the assemblies with many other students working with them. The various assemblies helped the students gain an insight to many different activities. Some of the Assemblies included: a play in September enti- tled Information Please, a Thanksgiving pro- gram with Reverend Arlen Fowler as guest speaker, and a Christmas program featuring the Girls' Glee Club. One of the most outstanding assemblies during the entire year was the as- sembly honoring the Youth for Safety Club. Several local and state dignitaries were present to present the first state charter to the local club. An award's assembly was held at the close of the year. With Elton LeHew, Jr. as chairman, and Mary Beth Adams as co-chairman, the as- sembly committee did a fine job presenting pro- grams to the school. . - 0 1 1 ' an , ' I ' Q ' -H W X .'. 5 -. Henry and his staff, the Guthrie High Cadet Corps completed another successful year of mil- itary instruction. The nine month term is cen- tered by the 'all important Federal Inspection' at the conclusion of the year. The goal of every cadet is to come out of this trial successfully. There was a Battle Group formation once a week and the corps learned to march as a unit as precisely as they did in their individual pla- toons twice a week. The Twenty-one man drill team instructed by Cadet lst Class William Silva Jr. and led by Sgt. Wallace Walters was quite successful in conducting their precise endeavors. This ambi- tious group of boys practiced a minimum of six times a week and worked in earnest to pay for 79 their trip to Arlington, Texas as well as other out-of-town trips. The team made eight exibi- tion trips putting on excellent shows during the halftime periods of out-of-town games, but their year was highlighted by the 4th Army Competi- tion at Arlington in which 38 other teams were entered. The rifle team guided by MfSgt. Carl Skeen was predominate over most of its oppggitign, This competition came from Kansas, Texas,Okla- homa, and Missouri and when all is said and done, it led to 23 duel matches and six postal matches including the Kemper Military School Invitational Match in Booneville, Missouri. The 4th Army Small Bore Championship match at Arlington, Texas and the Daniel Collier lnvita- tional Meet in Joplin, Missouri. COMPANY A CENTER: Kenneth Brouchoud. THE FIGHTING BLUEJAVS Under the excellent leadership of Headcoach Bob Daugherty, Coach Phil Kirtley, and Coach Bob Weems, the Guthrie High School Squad had the biggest football season since i945 with 5 wins, 3 losses, and 2 ties, Guthrie's first game with Del City ended in a 6-6 tie. The next game Guthrie breezed by Ponca City 22-0. With Guth- rie's first conference game behind them, the BlueJayS looked forward to the Blackwell game which ended in a tie. The next two games Guth- rie lost to Cushing and Harding, two of the top teams in the state. Then Guthrie finished the season by beating Guymond, Edmond, Perry, and Chilicco but, lost the hard fought Homecoming game to Stillwater. Guthrie was rated 4th in the conference at the beginning of the season. Guthrie was 3rd in 'Seniors the conference at the end ofthe season. Much of Guthrie's success was attributed to the 22 grad- uating seniors. Five boys made All-Conference from Guthrie: Gary Cole, Tackle, Charles Town- send, Back, Phil Owen, Back, John Hayes, Cen- ter, Dick Cahill, Quarterback. They were chosen for their spirit, ability, and sportsmanship. David Dickson, Tackle, Jerry Howe, Tackle, Gene Barnhart, Guard, Carl Brown, Center, and Gary Reid, Back, received honorable mention in the conference. A TEAM BASKETBALL The fighting Guthrie Blue Jays pulled a winning season from the fire this year by winning 17 of the 29 games for the year. The Blue Jays were not as tall as they were fast. lt was this speed that enabled them to be known over the state as a con- stant threat regardless of the team they were playing. The last ballgame of the season marked the end of their highschool basketball ca- reer for six of the ten men of the A team. They were Dennis Woodard, guard, Lloyd Forsythe, center, Gary Reid, guard, Elton LeHew, forward, Phil Owen, guard, and Charles Townsend, forward. The high scorers for the year were Mike Malone, starting forward, with an average of lO.3 points per game, and Dennis Wood- ard, starting guard, with 8.6 points per game. As a sum of the year it could be said that this was a very successful year in basketball due to the attitude of the players while on and off the court.
