Our futuri- is in our own hands, to make or to mar. T he Senior lass On September 1, one hundred and twenty of Guthrie's Blue Iays entered the front door of G. I-I. S. as seniors. As every group needs leaders, officers and sponsors were chosen to rule the roost. Darrel Camerer was elected class president. Miss Margaret Stewart and Mr. Orville Cordis were chosen as class sponsors. Student Council members were elected to meet with the younger chicks to plan ac- tivities for the entire flock. Thomas McNeely was chosen president of this group. Look at the birdie! Getting all the seniors to have pictures taken proved quite a task. Mr. Davis didn't seem to mind, though. Homecoming and Halloween! What a combination! The Student Council put on a fine assembly for the returning grads. Then at the football game, Captain limmy Burst crowned the Football Queen. But, in spite of lack of weight and experience, the Bl11e lays proved to be long on fight and condition and soon endeared themselves to the hearts of Guthrie fans. Unquenchable spirit and a consuming desire to win carried the team to five victories and a third place in District 8A. Coach Lyle Yarborough, assisted by Wayrnon Gibson, introduced the short punt formation, which the Blue lays accepted wholeheartedly. Bob Wittich was selected as all-conference and all-state guard, while Donnie Walter and lim Burst were selected for the second all-conference team. Donnie Walter and Elmer Howe were chosen at the end of the year as honorary co-captains by their team mates. Lettermen were: Donnie Walter, Darrel Camerer, Charles Bradshaw, Harry Deming, and Roy Lee Phillips, ends, Connie Brooks, Bob Stockwell, and Kenneth Hughes, tackles, Bob Wittich, lim Hafer, and Ronnie Little, guards, lohn Puckett, center, Elmer Howe, Don Howland, Myron Salter, lim Burst, Paul Shanahan, lohn Paul, Leon lones, Charles Canning, and Harold Carey, backs. Although the record showed more defeats than victories, hy no means did the team let down. A full schedule was completed and the hoys dis- played some good ball handling. The first games of the season were played on the high school stage. Cramped for space there, the enthusiastic squad memhers donned old clothes, wielded paint brushes, and put the armory court in condition. This provided a much larger court for practice and for games in the future.
