CLASS Ill 'l'0llY One morn1ng 1n September 1n 1944 a group of youngsters entered the f1rst grade room at the Guthr1e School Some of them were scared others were uncertaxn as to what was happemng They d1dn't rea11z.e that they were Just beg1nn1ng to cllrnb the ladder of educatlon From th1s group only ten f1n1shed at Guthr1e H1gh School They are Edd1e All1SOn Joesph Carter Dolly Dorr1s Nancy G1ll Sandra Gregory Shelby Grlffln Joy Hall K1rby Hollmgsworth B111 Longhurst and Marcelle Sales In the second grade Mary Ann Owen Jo1ned us In the th1rd grade we had two new pup1ls They were Anne Farmer and Martha Young In 1950 we entered the seventh grade Th1s was a new expenence because It was out f1rst year upsta1rs We were very exclted and some of us were very nervous We had to s1t through longer classes and we m1ssed our recesses I sp1te of all th1s we were hav1ng a good t1me and we wouldn't have gone back down sta1rs for anyth1ng Our sponsor was MISS Jane Reasons At the end of our seventh year we gave the e1ght grade a banquet Leon Church Jo1ned us 1n the seventh grade In the e1ghth grade we had a new sponsor Mr Henry Camp Malone At the end of our e1ghth year the seventh grade gave us a p1n1c at H1115 M111 wh1ch everyone engoyed very much Then the day came We graduated from grade school on May 15 1952 Th1rty one students graduated Now we had only four more years unt1l we would graduate from h1gh school Bobby Thomason Jo1ned us 1n the e1ghth grade In our Freshman year we added four new students But we also lost twelve others We now had twenty three students Our class off1cers were Pres1dent Leon Church V1ce Pres1dent B111 Longhurst Secretary Jean1ne Sm1th, Treasurer Joesph Carter and Reporter Wally W1l11ams Mr Malone was our sponsor for the second txme When we started our Sophomre year we had lost f1ve students We now had e1ghteen students The year started Just as wonderful and exc1t1ng as the others We aga1n had Mr Malone as our sponsor Our class off1cers were Pres1dent and Reporter Anne Farmer We are gettlng closer and closer to that long looked for graduat1on We are now Jun1ors We lost two students and ga1ned one We were very happy to have Mr Malone as our sponsor Our class off1cers were Pres1dent Marvln Rochelle VICE Pres1dent B111 Longhurst Secretary Mary Ann Owen Treasurer Joy Hall and Reporter Dolly Dorr1s At the beg1nn1ng of the year we dec1ded that for the Jun1or and Sen1or tr1p we would go to Flor1da We were determ1ned to go Sure enough at the end of the year the Jun1ors and Sen1ors went to F1or1da We also gave the Sen1ors a d1nner at Stage Coach Inn We were well represented 1n the Sen1or play At last the year had come We were Sen1ors Much to our Joy we aga1n had Mr Malone as our sponsor Th1S year we also lost two students but we ga1ned R1ta Anne S1ler We had s1xteen Sen1ors Our class off1cers for th1S last year were Pres1dent B111 Longhurst V1ce Pres1dent R1ta Anne S1ler Secretary Mary Ann Owen Treasurer Joy Hall and Reporter Leon Church We pub11shed the G H S REVIEW We also publlshed the 1956 ed1t1on of the Eagle One of the happy days of our Sen1or year was the day we rece1ved our class r1ngs Th1s year we presented the play Grandma's Best Years Th1S year the Jun1ors gave us a d1nner wh1ch we enjoyed very much Another h1gh po1nt of our Sen1or year was our Baccalaureate on Sunday afternoon May 6 1956 Then came our Class rught on Tuesday n1ght May 8 1956 Then the n1ght we had walted so long for came On Frrday mght, May ll 1956 we graduated from Guthr1e I-hgh School At last the moment we have wa1ted for has come Now we go out 1nto the world to be good c1t1zens and to try to make lt a better place 1n Wh1Ch to 11ve Mary Ann Owen Q . CLASS PIHIPHECY Good afternoon rad1o fr1ends, th1s 15 rad1o stat1on W G H S w1th studlos atop the Elkton Bank and Trust Co Guthr1e, Kentucky The t1me 15 now 1 OO P M and 15 t1me for the January 1, 1966 broadcast of A Walk Down 'Memory Lane 'Memory Lane as you know 1S presented once a year by B1ll's Supermark t Th1S afternoon we are focus1ng our peek o scope on the Guthr1e Class of 1956 Of course my program th1s afternoon 15 of spec1al 1nterest to me because, I graduated w1th the class of 1956, so w1thout further comment let's see what has happened 1n the last ten years Mr and Mrs Donald B1nkley are celebrat1ng the1r tenth wedd1ng an1versary th1s month Mrs B1nkley was the former Sandra Gregory The1r th1rd l1ttle g1r1 has Just been g1ven some muscular theraphy treatments by Dr E K HO1l1ngSWOIth Of course, we are all proud of Dr E K Holl1ngsworth, who was formerly known as K1rby He 15 now head surgeon at the Guthr1e Memor1al Hosp1tal He operates on any old classmates for free, 1nclud1ng Mr Malone, We hear that he st1ll has a way w1th the women I 1mag1ne the nurses keep h1m busy now Way off IH New York C1ty we f1nd the celebrated concert p1an1st Shelby Jean Gr1ff1n, who has a concert engagement next week w1th the New York Ph1lharmon1c She w1ll tour Europe th1s summer Marcelle Sales 1S mak1ng the tr1p w1th M155 Grlffln as her pr1vate secretary M1ss Sales 1S now able to take M1ss Gr1ff1n's rap1d d1ctat1on, wh1ch 15 qu1te an accomp11shment We now return to our own commun1ty to f1nd Edgar Seldon All1SOn III engaged 1n farm1ng He graduated from Un1vers1ty of Kentucky Agr1culture School and 1S now operat1ng h1S father's farm The b1g change 1S the atom1c powered farm mach1nery that Edd1e uses He also uses a plane to del1ver h1s cattle to the markets of the world He fl16S over h1s land 1n a small hel1copter M1ss Joy Hall 15 1n Ind1a us1ng her explanatory ab1l1ty and rel1g1on to help 1n combat1ng Commun1sm She has a pr1vate houseboat 1n wh1ch she r1des up and down the Ganges RIVCT She 15 study1ng art Her pa1nt1ng of the Guthr1e School Just sold for S25 O00 00 B ck 1n Guthr1e we see a store that covers a whole block B1ll's Supermarket IS owned and operated by B111 Longhurst, Jr He Just recently returned to h1s old home town to establ1sh th1S supermarket, after several years w1th the St LOUIS Hawks For a change of scene we go to Hollywood Calf1orn1a and f1nd that MISS Anne Farmer has become a. screen star She 15 now known as Amy Frank Warner Bros Slgned her for a two year contract Now we take you to the nat1ons cap1tal where M1ss Mary Ann Owen 15 l1brar1an at the L1brary of Congress She's not only a good l1brar1an but has wr1tten several books, one of wh1ch 1S a H1StOTy of Guthr1e Joseph Carter, 1f I remember correctly used to work for Jenk1ns Department Store Well Joe has come qu1te a long way he now owns the largest furn1ture store 1n Ch1CagO We are 1ndeed a g1fted class We have another doctor, Dr R1ta Ann S1ler She spec1al1zes 1n ped1atr1cs and sends her pat1ents to the Guthr1e Memorlal Hosp1tal By the way, Dr S1ler IS st1ll s1ngle Our wonder boy, Bobby Thomasson, has reached h1s he1ght of arnb1t1on He 1S now pr1nc1pa1 of the Guthr1e H1gh School Here are some of the rules no chew1ng gum, no talk1ng 1n the halls perm1ss1on reqxnred to leave a room, and all must keep grades to a B average The peek o scope can't br1ng th1s one 1n too clear, but I see a n1ce wh1te cottage w1th three l1ttle g1rls and three l1ttle boys play1ng around lt The mother 1S M1ss Dolly Jean Dorr1s who has become the 1deal Homemaker There always was a bra1n 1n the class and the one 1n our class was Leon Church He 15 now Pres1dent of Un1vers1ty of I..ou1sv1l1e some say he may even become pres1dent of the Un1ted States some day Well our t1me IS up, rad1o fr1ends, and I must catch my plane as I am spend1ng the rest of the w1nter on the R1vera I have Just been made fore1gn correspondent for my f1rm Don't forget to watch M155 Gflffln on your TV ton1ght She 15 accompany1ng Eddxe F1sher on h1s program And so, th1s 15 Nancy G1ll Slgnlng off for Memory Lane and hop1ng that you w111 11sten aga1n next year, at the same t1me, when we shall agaxn br1ng you up to date on the 1956 Sen1or Class of Guthr1e H1gh Nancy G1ll . , ' .
