CLASS PROPHECY Iwas tense wrth excrtement as I entered the darkened room of the seer who was to reveal to me the Future of my classmates l was held rn a mystrc spell by currosrty and a certarn feelrng of fear Only a few lrghts here and there rllumrned the darkness Some curtarns at the rear of the room parted and two verled frgures appeared dancrng to strange musrc that came from an un known source Presently the dancrng ceased a covered object was placed on a table rn the center of the room Agarn the curtarns parted and a frgure draped rn frlmly srlk came glrdrng rnto the room She sat down by the object and uncovered rt and before me I saw a crystal ball The seer seemed rn a trance gazrng rnto the ball as rf tryrng to learn rts secrets Her lrps moved and she murmured rn an rndrstrnct vorce Guthrre Hrgh School Senror Class of 1954 55 I see the frgure of Dorothy Bellar as she moves qurckly around rn her spotless cottage preparrng the noonday meal for her husband Now I see her and a tall brunette at the table en Joyrng the delrcrous food that the lrttle house wrfe has prepared She cleared her vorce and contrnued Next I see a schoolroom full of happy chrldren The well drscrplrned chrldren are srttrng quretly rn therr desks studyrng ln the charr at the teacher s desk I see Jesse Owen Robertson l-low drfferent thrs was from the future I had rmagrned for hrm He had changed from an adolescence school boy to a drgnrfred effrcrent school teacher I returned from my own thoughts to hear the vorce of the seer sayrng Before me rs the work room of a large manufacturrng plant I can almost hear the roarrng of the machrnery The scene changes to the offrce of the concern At a desk on whrch rests a srgn Owner and General Manager I see Paul Coppedge drctatrng a letter to hrs stenographer Ann Margaret Walker I was not surprrsed at thrs knowrng the executrve abrlrty of Paul and the competency of Ann Margaret From the crystal ball l learned that Charles Johnson seekrng the land of sunshrne and warmth after broadenrng hrs educatron at Harvard and Cambrrdge Unrversrtres has become an outstand rng rnstructor of Englrsh at the Unrversrty of Florrda Hrs Pulrtzer pnze wrnnrng novel ALL THE MEN OF GUTHRIE has accorded hrm a place as one of the foremost authors of our day The seer s vorce trarled off rnto srlence and her face became very thoughtful I leaned towards the ball and anxrously lrstened to her mutterrngs Now I see a stately ballroom rn a beautrlul home It rs the scene of laughter and garety At the head of the recervrng lrne stands Margre Smrth and her husband who are the hosts of thrs brrllrant affarr The seer contrnued I see Danrel Douglas the drgnrfred lecturer on athletrcs for boys was raprdly becomrng famous throughout the South for hrs brrllrant speeches and was attractrng large numbers of puprls to the rnstrtutrons rn the rnterests for whrch he was travelrng I hardly had trme to take rn what the seer had Just sard before she started speakrng agarn I frnd a very happy famrly rn a cozy bungalow The husband rs busy amusrng the chrldren whrle hrs wrfe Betty Young rs busy mendrng The scene changes Everywhere rn New York there are posters bearrng the followrng notrce Tonrght at the Metropolrtan Opera House Mr Irmmy Whrte the great Southern tenor rn con cert I was delrghted wrth the success my schoolmate was to attarn rn future years Agarn the vorce of the seer sayrng a large crty I see a health clrnrc frlled wrth mothers and therr chrldren Among the doctors who are examrnrng and prescrrbrng for the chrldrenldrs trngursh the frgure of Johnny Payne berng assrsted by a Red Cross Nurse Becky Lannom But the seer cont d I catch the name of Belcher I see a young man rn a courtroom makrng a strong appear for a man s lrfe Thrs IS James Roy Belcher lawyer The seer contrnued In a room wrth prctures of great musrcrans hung around the wall I see a young lady srttrng by a prano explarnrng musrcal terms to a chrld The musrc teacher rs no other than Georgra Marklrn For several mrnutes the seer was srlent Then as rf awakrng from a dream she aroused herself and contrnued I see a beautrful theater crowded wrth a great throng of people The audrence seems restless and anxrous for the performance to begrn As the orchestra starts to play the cur tarn rrses an avaudevrlle scene wrth Mack Howell as the star comedran I remember the talent of thrs boy rn G H S along srmrlar hne and was not surprrsed at hrs future I drd not expect anythrng else from the seer as she had prophesred the future of each member ofthe Senror Class of 55 but to my great surprrse she contrnued I see a crowd of happy young people on the deck of a steamer They are happy and carefree I learned from the conversatron that the shrp was bound for Europe where they would vrsrt all pornts of rnterest Among the crowd I recognrzed the frgure of a member of the Class of 55 but whose name I can not tell I went away rejorcrng over the future of my classmates and realrzrng that rf the seer prophesred correctly we would all lrve a happy lrfe 11 1 . . 1 ' 1 ' o ' 1 1 ' . . . . . . ,, . . . 1 1 1 , 1 . . . . . . ,, . .
