THE UNSUNG HERO THE SPECTATOR The spectator IS the ltttle guy who goes to games unnotlced No one claps when he comes 1n no one lauds h1s w1nn1ng contrlbuttons He doesn t complam when people crowd 1n tromp h1s toes and muss h1s hatr As a phys1cally f1t spectmen he wtthstands all forms of nature from hatlstontng footballs to bee Stlflglflg baseballs Our hero often gets exc1ted about h1s work and uses Jumptng and shouung to re11eve the tens1on. He knows he ts do1ng what IS psychologrcally correct although some cr1t1c1ze htm for h1S lmmaturlty and vulgarlty The fall of 1957 saw htm cheer when Gary Reeves made a touch down and boo when he found Reeves d1dn t Our llttle frrend urged the team on to vtctory when h1s band su1t was sopped and h1s horn ru1ned by a torrenual ramstorm whtch wouldn t substde He st1ll sat on h1s rough plank when the snow fell and he wtshed to heaven he could run around the f1e1d too The basketball season began and he found htmself well protected from harsh north wlnds but scorched 1n a nlnety degree oven created by hundreds of human compamons One lnstance though he found the gym well over one hundred degrees Thts occurred ln the beneflt game 1n wh1ch Mr Merrttt, the beloved superm tendent w1ll1ngly offered h1s athletlc prowess to the faculty for the1r annual struggle m the teacher vs team contentton. Mr Merrltt s htunble contrtbutton to the evenlng s entertatnment proved hun the modest man supposed when he left the game early clue to a sudden southern exposure The de11r1ous laughter of the spectator at th1s unexpected occurrence dxd more to relleve the brave gentleman s embarrassment than any number of scox-mg pomts would ever do Yes our good humor man keeps everyone 1n good sp1r1ts by laughmg not only at such hum111at1ng S1l'LIaI10l'1S but also at aggravat1ng ones He let go for lnstance when J' ody Beck grtmaced because another player knocked her glasses off more than once 1n a game He howled when trlpped McCo0lsomersau1ted across the floor and even laughed when he htmself was h1t 1n the noggtn by a mlsdtrected ball' The spectator s vocabulary 1S ftlled w1th some ongmal and not qulte or1g1nal say1ngs Here are some you m1ght recogntze We want short shorts!
