1957 TIGERS A PLEAS XINT SURPRISE After graduaung the f1rst SIX regulars off our last year s all t1me champ1ons th1s years vers1on of the T1gers was very much of a surpr1se to most basketball fans Start1ng out slowly mth a whole new team Coach Nystuen brought hlS charges along so that by tournament t1me they had httle d1ff1culty lll wmmng our second sect1onal ll'1 a row w1th the closest game bemg 16 po1nts To top Ih1S off, they went mto DISIFICI Tournament play mmus the1r top scorer and rebounder Bob McCool, who was 1ll at the t1me and they defeated the1r f1rst round foe Ankeny 58 49 Tlus v1ctor was truly a team effort Ankeny had beaten us early 1n the ear and had won the tough North Polk Cotmty area Secnonal, but even w1thout our star McCool the boys won thetr f1rst D1str1ct game for the second vear m a row w1th a resoundmg upset w1n on shear hustle and des1re As of pubhcat1on t1me the boys are entermg senu fmal d1str1ct play at East Des MOIHCS facxng a verv strong Grmnell team. Most observers at the begmnmg of the season would have put our cl1ances of f1n1shLng very high 1n the Coon Valley Conference as very doubtful However these boys went 1nto the1r f1nal conference game Wlfh an undefeated record of 6 O 1n conference play ar1d were playtng Mannmg at the t1me the number one rated team 111 Southwestern Iowa for the champ1onsh1p Manmng s expenence and shooung ab1l1ty proved too much for the defendtng champ1ons and the TIQCFS had to be content w1th an und1sputed second place Lfl the f1na1 conference standmg I-hghhghts of the year tncluded a hard fought two pomt v1ctory over a strong Audubon team at Audubon. D1ck Lewer h1gh scormg Audubon forward was held to s1x po1nts by the defens1ve mmded TIQCYS Go1ng ll'ltO the Gltdden game, we were undefeated U1 the conference w1th f1ve v1ctor1es but faced an always dangerous foe U1 the Sw 1ldcats Agam the T1gers responded w1th a 68 47 v1ctory A crowd teaser of the regular season was the 71 67 overt1me VlCIOI'y over a very worthy Tmgley f1VE The over all record, to date, lS 14 v1ctor1es agamst 8 defeats Offenswely we have scored 1076 po1nts agamst our opponents 977 Our leadmg po1nt getter IS Bob McCool a 6' 2 sophomore with a total of 365 pomts whxch IS over a 17 pomt per game average Bob has broken all ex1stmg school records for a sophomore this year He h1t 37 pot. .s H1 our Sect1onal fmal and d1d not play the ennre game. He has been our top rebounder and dere.ns1ve player all year J' 1m Boh lender, seruor forward, has 289 po1nts to date and has been a mamstay w1th h1s floor play all year The Buckmaster twms, Marvm and Merlm have shown a steady 1mprovement all year and have been tndispenstble w1th the1r scrap and des1re, Marvin our playrnaker has scored 158 pomts up to now, and Merlm started the season as a reserve but has earned a regular start mg pos1t1on as the season has progressed Rlchard G11son has been a steady defensive and re boundmg starter all year and IS the workhorse of our squad He has 121 po1nts to date Sopho more, Gary Reeves has seen extenslve duty at guard and has helped us cons1derably w1th hts out shootxng.
